Chapter 4: The Birth Certificate That Should Never Have Existed
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The rain tapped against the kitchen windows, and the refrigerator hummed in the silence. Ellie stood beside the island with tears sliding down her cheeks, clutching her stuffed rabbit so tightly that its worn ear twisted between her fingers.
Daniel stared at the birth certificate.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“You told me you had never been married before.””
Vanessa wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.
“I hadn't.””
“You told me you'd never had children.””
“I didn't raise any children.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
She glanced at Ellie.
“Daniel, please. Not in front of her.””
“You just told us she's your biological daughter. You told us Claire stole her. Now you're asking me to protect you from the consequences of your own words?””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“I was trying to protect Ellie.””
I stepped between her and my granddaughter.
“From what, Vanessa? The truth?””
Vanessa looked at me with open contempt.
“You have spent your entire life believing you know everything about this family. You don't. You never knew what your husband was capable of, and you certainly don't know what happened seven years ago.””
“Then tell us.””
She looked toward the hallway.
“Not here.””
Daniel picked up the birth certificate.
“No. You don't get to choose the room anymore. You don't get to choose what Ellie hears, what she remembers, or what she is allowed to ask.””
He held the paper up.
“Is this genuine?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Did you give birth to Ellie?””
“Yes.””
The word landed like a stone.
Daniel lowered the certificate.
“Then why did Claire raise her?””
Vanessa pulled out a chair and sat down. Her hands trembled as she smoothed the skirt of her cream dress.
“Because Claire was supposed to give her back.””
“To whom?””
“To me.””
“You disappeared from her life before I ever met you.””
“Because Robert told me it was the only way to keep the baby safe.””
I remembered the photograph in my pocket, the one Vanessa had taken. Robert's hand on her shoulder. The baby in her arms. The silver bracelet.
“What did Robert have to do with your pregnancy?”” I asked.
Vanessa's eyes flickered toward me.
“He was helping me.””
“Helping you do what?””
“Escape my family.””
She gave a bitter laugh.
“My father wanted me to marry a man twice my age. He had debts, Margaret. Terrible debts.
He thought marrying me off would solve them. Robert was the only person who offered to help.””
Daniel leaned against the counter.
“So you ran away with my uncle?””
“I was twenty-four. Robert was the only person I trusted.””
“He was nearly fifty.””
“He wasn't the man you think he was.””
“He stole from my father.””
“Your father stole from him first!””
The shout startled Ellie.
She dropped her rabbit.
Daniel immediately crouched to retrieve it, but Ellie backed away before he could touch her.
That hurt him more than Vanessa's confession.
He stayed where he was.
“It's okay, sweetheart,” he whispered.
“I'm not angry with you.””
Ellie looked at Vanessa.
“Are you my mommy?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“Yes, baby.””
“Then why did you make me sleep outside?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Ellie began crying harder.
“You said my real mommy was dead because she didn't love me anymore.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
I knelt beside Ellie and wrapped my arms around her.
“Your mother loved you,” I whispered.
“Whatever happened, she loved you.””
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“Stop putting ideas into her head!””
Daniel moved between us.
“Sit down.””
“You cannot tell me how to behave with my own daughter!””
“Your own daughter?”” he repeated.
“You spent eighteen months treating her like an unwanted guest in this house.””
“I was trying to teach her discipline!””
“You put her outside in a storm!””
“She needed to understand that actions have consequences!””
“She is six years old!””
Daniel's voice cracked on the final word.
For the first time, Vanessa seemed to realize that the man standing before her was not going to rescue her from this conversation.
She grabbed her handbag.
“Fine. Believe whatever you want. But when the truth comes out, don't expect me to forgive either of you.””
“Where are you going?”” Daniel demanded.
“To someone who can explain what you refuse to understand.””
She headed toward the garage.
I remembered what Ellie had said about the music box.
Before I could stop her, Vanessa disappeared through the back door.
Daniel turned to me.
“What did she mean about Claire? What did Helen tell you?””
I explained the discrepancy in Claire's medical records and the connection to Robert.
His face drained of color.
“You spoke to Helen?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me sooner?””
“Because I didn't know what it meant.””
He ran both hands through his hair.
“God. I married a woman who knew my uncle, who apparently gave birth to my daughter, and who has been lying to me about all of it.””
He looked toward the back door.
“And now she's going somewhere to get her version of the truth.””
I squeezed his arm.
“Then we need to find the truth first.””
We left Ellie with my neighbor, Mrs. Collins, who arrived within ten minutes and promised not to let her out of her sight.
Then Daniel and I searched the garage.
The air smelled of damp cardboard, gasoline, and old wood. Boxes were stacked along the walls. Vanessa's expensive holiday decorations sat beside broken bicycles and bags of discarded clothes.
Daniel opened the first cabinet.
Nothing.
I searched a shelf beneath the workbench.
Then I saw it.
A small wooden music box, tucked behind a plastic storage container.
The lid was scratched. One brass hinge hung loose. When I opened it, the familiar melody struggled into life, skipping every few notes.
Inside lay a faded ribbon, a tiny photograph of Claire, and a silver key.
Daniel picked up the key.
“Mom, look.””
There was a small tag attached to it.
*H. BROOKS — SAFE DEPOSIT BOX 114.*
Helen's name.
Daniel stared at me.
“Why would Claire have a key to Helen's safe deposit box?””
Before I could answer, my phone vibrated.
It was Helen.
“Margaret,” she said urgently, “where are you?””
“In Daniel's garage. We found Claire's music box.””
“Did you find a key?””
I looked at Daniel.
“Yes.””
Helen exhaled sharply.
“Then listen carefully. Do not open that box without me. Claire left something there before she died, and I believe it concerns Ellie.””
“What is it?””
“A recording.””
“Of what?””
Helen paused.
“Of the night Ellie was born.””
A car engine roared outside.
Daniel rushed to the garage window.
Vanessa's car was backing out of the driveway.
He ran to the door, but she was already speeding down the street.
Then my phone vibrated again.
