Chapter 11: The Boy in Calvin’s Shadow
Nobody spoke.
Not for several seconds.
The photograph remained on my phone.
A young boy.
Standing beside Calvin.
Smiling.
A smile that looked painfully familiar.
I hated that.
Because part of me wanted to recognize him.
Part of me wanted to say:
That’s my son.
But another part of me was terrified.
Because if Naomi was right…
Then Calvin had been hiding something even worse.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Bear.””
I handed him the phone.
He studied the image.
“What is this?””
I looked at Naomi.
“You said that’s not Eli.””
She nodded.
“I know my son.””
Her voice was firm.
“Then who is he?””
Naomi stared at the photograph.
“I don’t know.””
That answer scared me.
Because Naomi always knew something.
The fact that she didn’t meant we had reached something even she couldn’t explain.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, no photograph.
Just words.
COME TO THE OLD BRIDGE.
COME ALONE.
Marcus immediately shook his head.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I have to.””
“You absolutely do not.””
I looked back at the message.
Calvin wanted me there.
Which meant there was a reason.
And I had spent too many years letting him decide what I knew.
“I’m going.””
Marcus stepped in front of me.
“Bear.””
I looked at him.
“You’re asking me to walk into a trap.””
“Yes.””
“And you think I should?””
“Yes.””
I almost smiled.
Because he knew me.
“You’re terrible at convincing people.””
“I’m good at keeping them alive.””
That was harder to argue.
Naomi stood.
“I’m coming.””
“No.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You don’t get to make that decision.””
“You spent thirty years hiding because of this man.””
“And you spent thirty years forgetting because of him.””
The words hit.
She stepped closer.
“I’m done hiding.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Lila grabbed Naomi’s hand.
“Are you leaving?””
Naomi looked down.
“No, baby.””
She looked at me.
“I’m going to finish something.””
Lila looked at me.
“Are you going to bring my mommy back?””
The question stayed with me.
Because that was what I had been doing my entire life.
Trying to bring something back.
A memory.
A truth.
A person.
I knelt beside her.
“I promise I’ll try.””
She nodded.
Then she handed me something.
A small folded piece of paper.
“What is this?””
“My other drawing.””
I opened it.
This one was different.
It showed three people.
Me.
Naomi.
And Lila.
But there was someone else in the corner.
A boy.
Watching.
I looked at her.
“Who drew this?””
She shrugged.
“I did.””
“When?””
“Last Christmas.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
She looked confused.
“Because Mommy said I had a brother.””
I looked at Naomi.
Her face went pale.
“You told her?””
Naomi nodded slowly.
“I never wanted her to grow up believing she was alone.””
The room went silent.
A brother.
A missing son.
A photograph.
A lie.
Everything was connected.
I put on my leather vest.
Marcus grabbed his jacket.
“I’m coming.””
I didn’t argue.
Some fights weren’t meant to be fought alone.
The old bridge was twenty minutes away.
The same bridge where everything started.
The same place where my life split into two versions.
The club motorcycles followed behind us.
Not close.
Not interfering.
Just there.
Family.
When we reached the bridge, the snow had stopped.
The river below moved slowly.
Almost peacefully.
Too peacefully.
Calvin stood in the middle of the road.
Older.
Gray.
But still carrying the same confidence.
The same arrogance.
He smiled when he saw me.
“Finally.””
I stepped forward.
“You have a lot of explaining to do.””
He laughed softly.
“Still angry.””
“You kidnapped my memories.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I saved you from them.””
I stared.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
He looked past me.
Toward Naomi.
“I expect her to tell you the truth.””
Naomi stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Calvin smiled.
“There it is.””
He looked at me.
“The fear.””
I tightened my fists.
“What truth?””
Calvin reached into his coat.
He pulled out a file.
Then he said the words that made Naomi freeze.
“The child you think I stole…”
May you like
He opened the file.
“Was never yours.””
