Chapter 9: The Woman Who Stayed Behind
The video began with darkness.
Then rain.
Heavy rain.
The kind that turns the world into shadows.
Everyone in the room moved closer to the screen.
Nobody spoke.
The camera angle was strange.
Low.
Hidden.
Like someone had recorded it without being noticed.
Then I saw myself.
Thirty years younger.
Standing beside the river.
My breath caught.
Even though I knew it was me, it felt like watching a stranger.
A man I used to be.
A man who remembered everything.
Naomi appeared on the screen.
Younger.
Terrified.
She was holding a bag.
The same bag she said contained evidence.
Then another person entered the frame.
Calvin.
My stomach twisted.
The three of us stood there.
Arguing.
But the audio was damaged.
Only pieces came through.
“...you don’t understand…”
“...give it to me…”
“...Bear, listen…”
I stepped closer.
Trying to hear my own forgotten voice.
Then the video changed.
A sudden movement.
Calvin grabbed the bag.
I stepped between them.
Naomi shouted.
Then everything happened quickly.
A struggle.
A flash.
The camera shook.
I fell.
The screen went dark.
Nobody moved.
Then the video continued.
A few seconds later.
The camera showed Naomi kneeling beside me.
I was unconscious.
Blood on my forehead.
She was crying.
I felt everyone looking at me.
Waiting for my reaction.
Naomi whispered:
“I know what this looks like.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I was watching myself.
Watching the woman everyone believed abandoned me.
She wasn’t leaving.
She was staying.
On the video, Naomi touched my face.
“Bear, wake up.””
Her voice broke.
“I’m sorry.””
Then she looked up.
And said something that made my entire body freeze.
“Your brother did this.””
The video ended.
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Marcus looked at me.
“Bear…”
I raised my hand.
Not because I was angry.
Because I needed silence.
I turned to Naomi.
“You knew.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“You knew Calvin did it.””
“Yes.””
“You knew he lied.””
“Yes.””
My voice lowered.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Her tears finally fell.
“Because when you woke up…”
She stopped.
I waited.
“What happened when I woke up?””
Naomi looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something worse than fear.
Guilt.
“You didn’t remember me.””
The words hurt.
“But you remembered Calvin.””
I said nothing.
She continued.
“He told you I was the person who caused the accident.””
My chest tightened.
“He made me the villain.””
“Yes.””
“And I believed him?””
She looked down.
“You begged me to leave.””
The room disappeared.
The Christmas lights.
The people.
Everything.
I stared at her.
“I did that?””
She nodded.
“You said you didn’t know who I was.””
A painful silence followed.
Then Lila spoke.
“But Mommy stayed.””
Everyone looked at her.
She held the old drawing.
“She said she waited because she knew you would come back.””
Naomi covered her face.
I looked at the little girl.
Then at the woman who carried thirty years of pain alone.
For the first time since this began…
I didn’t see a mystery.
I saw a person.
My phone suddenly rang.
Everyone jumped.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Then a familiar voice came through.
Calvin.
“Did you enjoy remembering?””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Where are you?””
A quiet laugh.
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
I stood.
“What question should I ask?””
His voice lowered.
“Ask why Naomi never told you about the child you lost.””
The call ended.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Everyone stared at me.
Naomi’s face turned completely white.
May you like
And I knew.
There was one more memory waiting to come back.
