Chapter 6: The Man Who Built the Lie
Nobody spoke after the second message appeared.
Not because we were afraid.
Because everyone in that room understood what it meant.
The past wasn’t coming back.
The past had already found us.
Marcus looked at me.
“Tell me you’re not going after him tonight.””
I looked at him.
“You know me better than that.””
“That’s exactly why I’m asking.””
Naomi stood.
“Bear, you don’t understand what Calvin is capable of.””
I turned.
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“That’s the problem.””
I held up the photograph.
“I understand what he did.””
Naomi shook her head.
“You don’t.””
She stepped closer.
“When he realized I survived, he didn’t just hide me.””
She lowered her voice.
“He erased me.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means there are no records of me after that night.””
Marcus looked confused.
“How is that possible?””
Naomi laughed softly.
“It’s possible when someone has money, power, and people who owe them favors.””
I looked at Lila.
The little girl was watching all of us.
Trying to understand a world adults had built around secrets.
I walked over and knelt beside her.
“Lila.””
She looked at me.
“Are you mad at my mommy?””
The question caught me off guard.
“No.””
“Are you mad at me?””
My chest tightened.
“No.””
She looked down.
“Mom said you were kind.””
I glanced at Naomi.
“She was right.””
Lila smiled slightly.
Then she pulled something from her pocket.
A small folded paper.
Another drawing.
I stared.
“What’s that?””
She handed it to me.
“This one is old.””
I opened it.
My hands stopped moving.
It was another picture.
But this one wasn’t of me and Naomi.
It was of three people.
Me.
Naomi.
And a little baby.
On the bottom, written in childlike handwriting:
BEAR PROMISED HE WOULD PROTECT US.
I looked at Naomi.
Her face went pale.
“You never showed me that.””
She whispered.
“I didn’t know she had it.””
My heart pounded.
“Protect you from what?””
Naomi looked toward the window.
Outside, the motorcycles sat beneath the Christmas lights.
Silent.
Waiting.
Then she said something I never expected.
“Bear…”
Her voice trembled.
“Lila isn’t the only thing Calvin took from us.””
I stood.
“What else?””
Before she could answer, the clubhouse lights went out.
Complete darkness.
Children screamed from the main room.
Someone knocked over a table.
Marcus immediately moved.
“Everyone stay calm!””
Emergency lights flickered on.
Red.
Dim.
Unnatural.
I grabbed my phone.
No signal.
The screen showed one new message.
FROM CALVIN.
I opened it.
One line.
ASK HER ABOUT THE NIGHT YOU LOST YOUR MEMORY.
I slowly looked at Naomi.
Her face told me everything.
There was another secret.
One bigger than the river.
Bigger than the disappearance.
Bigger than the lie that destroyed thirty years of my life.
“What happened that night?”” I asked.
Naomi’s eyes filled with tears.
And she whispered:
“Bear… you didn’t just save me.””
May you like
She looked at me.
“I saved you too.”” :::
