Chapter 13: The Son Who Waited
The message stayed on the screen.
I NEED TO KNOW WHY MY FATHER LEFT ME.
Fourteen words.
That was all it took to break a man who thought he had already lost everything.
I looked at Calvin.
Then at Naomi.
Then back at the frozen image of the young man.
My son.
Eli.
Alive.
Somewhere.
Believing I abandoned him.
My knees almost gave out.
Not from weakness.
From the weight of a truth I had waited thirty years to find.
“Where is he?””
My voice was barely above a whisper.
Calvin didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Where is my son?””
He looked at the river.
“You’re not ready for him.””
I laughed.
A broken, angry sound.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
For years, Calvin had decided everything.
What I remembered.
What I forgot.
Who I trusted.
Who I hated.
But not anymore.
I grabbed his jacket.
Marcus immediately moved closer.
“Bear.””
I ignored him.
Calvin looked down at my hand.
Then back at me.
“You really don’t remember the night you chose him.””
I froze.
“What?””
His eyes narrowed.
“You want to know why I took Eli?””
Naomi stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.””
But I needed answers.
Even from him.
“Tell me.””
Calvin sighed.
“You and Naomi were going to run.””
Naomi shook her head.
“We were going to protect our child.””
“Same thing,” Calvin said.
He looked at me.
“You were ready to leave the club.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t sound like me.””
“It was.””
A memory flashed.
A suitcase.
A motorcycle.
A woman smiling.
Gone.
Calvin continued.
“You wanted a quiet life.””
I looked at Naomi.
“Is that true?””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“I don’t remember.””
“I know.””
She looked like those words hurt her.
“I know you don’t.””
Calvin stepped closer.
“And then the accident happened.””
The wind moved across the bridge.
The same bridge.
The same place where everything had started.
“You hit your head,” he said.
“You forgot pieces of your life.””
I stared.
“And you took advantage.””
His expression hardened.
“I did what I had to do.””
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“You did what you wanted.””
He didn’t argue.
That was the worst part.
The truth didn’t need defending.
Naomi walked toward him.
“Where is Eli?””
Calvin looked at her.
“You want him back?””
She nodded.
“More than anything.””
“Then tell him why.””
She stopped.
“What?””
“Tell him why you disappeared.””
Her face changed.
“Because you forced me.””
Calvin shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Because she chose to run.””
My anger rose.
“You threatened her.””
“I gave her a choice.””
Naomi’s voice broke.
“You threatened my baby.””
Calvin looked away.
For the first time, I saw something almost human in him.
Regret.
But it was too late.
Regret didn’t erase damage.
It only admitted it existed.
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
A location.
An address.
Eli.
I looked at it.
Then at Naomi.
“He wants to meet.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Does he know?””
I shook my head.
“He only knows I left.””
The pain on her face was unbearable.
I understood then.
She had spent years carrying two losses.
A son taken from her.
And a man who forgot he loved her.
I looked at Calvin.
“You’re coming with us.””
He smiled faintly.
“Why?””
“Because Eli deserves to hear the truth.””
For once, Calvin didn’t have an answer.
The address led us to a small workshop outside town.
No luxury.
No security.
Just a quiet building surrounded by empty fields.
A place where someone had tried to live normally.
I stepped out of the car.
My hands were shaking.
Not from fear.
From the impossible moment waiting ahead.
The door opened.
A young man stood there.
Tall.
Dark hair.
Strong jaw.
Eyes that looked strangely familiar.
My breath stopped.
He looked at me.
Then at Naomi.
His face changed.
Like he had spent his entire life imagining this moment.
But never believing it would happen.
“Mom?””
Naomi broke.
She ran forward.
Eli froze.
Then he hugged her.
A mother holding the child she thought she lost forever.
A son holding the woman he thought abandoned him.
I stood back.
Watching.
Unable to move.
Then Eli looked at me.
The silence between us was unbearable.
“You’re him.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
His expression hardened.
“Why?””
One word.
But it carried years.
“Why did you leave?””
I opened my mouth.
Nothing came.
Because the honest answer was worse.
“I don’t know.””
His eyes narrowed.
“You don’t know?””
I stepped closer.
“I remember pieces.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
I swallowed.
“It’s the truth.””
He looked away.
“My whole life, I thought you didn’t want me.””
My chest broke.
“I did.””
“Then where were you?””
I looked at Naomi.
At Marcus.
At the son standing in front of me.
“I was fighting a story someone else wrote.””
Eli looked confused.
Then angry.
Then hurt again.
And before I could explain more, Calvin walked into the workshop.
Eli froze.
His face changed.
“Why is he here?””
I turned.
Because suddenly I understood.
Eli wasn’t surprised to see Calvin.
He was afraid.
May you like
And that meant there was one final secret.
One Calvin had never told any of us.
