Chapter 2 - The Hotel That Waited Thirty Years For MeThe room became silent.

Nobody looked at Victoria anymore.

Everyone looked at the document.

Richard Hayes.

The man whose name appeared on the biggest financial scandal in the city.

The man who had built his reputation as an honest businessman.

Had secretly used my family’s hotel as collateral.

Without permission.

Without ownership.

Without my grandfather’s approval.

Victoria stared at the papers.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

I looked at her.

“A misunderstanding?”

She swallowed.

“My husband handles business.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“No.”

His voice was firm.

“Your husband stole access to private hotel records.”

Victoria looked angry.

“You are accusing my family?”

Thomas looked at her.

“I am protecting this family.”

Then he looked at me.

“The Carter family.”

I still couldn’t believe it.

Hours earlier, I had walked into the Grand Regent wearing a cheap coat.

I expected rejection.

Maybe a job interview.

Maybe a few answers about my mother.

I never expected to discover I owned the entire building.

But the biggest shock wasn’t the money.

It was realizing my mother had kept this from me.

Why?

Why would she hide something so important?

Thomas answered that question.

“Your mother wanted you away from this world.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

He sighed.

“Because your grandfather’s success came with enemies.”

He showed me old newspaper articles.

Business conflicts.

Legal battles.

People trying to take the hotel.

“Your mother believed a normal life would keep you safe.”

I looked down.

“She protected me.”

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But she also protected the truth.”

The next morning, the board members of the Grand Regent arrived.

They had spent years believing the hotel had no owner.

When Thomas announced my arrival…

Nobody spoke.

“This is Mia Carter.”

A board member laughed.

“You mean Anna Carter’s daughter?”

Thomas nodded.

The man immediately stood.

“That’s impossible.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because the Carter heir disappeared.”

I frowned.

“My mother disappeared?”

The room became quiet.

Nobody answered.

That was when I realized…

There was another secret.

Thomas took me into my grandfather’s private office.

A room that had been locked for thirty years.

Dust covered everything.

But everything was preserved.

A desk.

Books.

Photographs.

Letters.

On the wall was one picture.

My grandfather.

My mother.

And another person.

A young man.

I stared.

“Who is that?”

Thomas became quiet.

“That was your uncle.”

“My uncle?”

He nodded.

“Your mother’s older brother.”

I looked at the photograph.

“Where is he?”

Thomas hesitated.

“He vanished.”

Again.

Another missing person.

Another family secret.

That evening, I returned home exhausted.

But when I opened my apartment door…

Someone was waiting.

A man.

Older.

Wearing an expensive suit.

He smiled.

“Mia Carter.”

I froze.

“Who are you?”

He held out a business card.

Richard Hayes.

Victoria’s husband.

The man whose name was on the fraudulent loan.

“What do you want?”

He smiled.

“To talk.”

I stepped back.

“I have nothing to say.”

He looked around my small apartment.

Then said quietly:

“You have no idea what your grandfather left you.”

My heart tightened.

“What does that mean?”

He leaned closer.

“The hotel is only the beginning.”

Then he walked away.

Leaving me with one terrifying thought.

If Richard knew about my inheritance…

Who else knew?
