Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew I Was Home

The house went silent.

Not peaceful silence.

The kind of silence that comes right before something breaks.

I stood in Lily’s bedroom, staring at the closed door.

The man downstairs knew I was home.

That was the part I couldn’t understand.

Nobody knew I was coming back today.

My business trip had ended early because my meeting was canceled. I hadn’t called Vanessa. I wanted to surprise Lily. I wanted to walk through the door and see her face light up.

But someone else seemed to know.

Someone who had been waiting.

“Daddy,” Lily whispered.

I looked down.

Her small hand was wrapped around mine.

“Stay with me.””

My chest tightened.

“I’m right here.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was frozen near the window.

Not confused.

Not shocked.

Terrified.

“Vanessa.””

She didn’t answer.

“Who is downstairs?””

Her lips parted.

Then closed again.

“Vanessa.””

She finally looked at me.

“Marcus.””

The name landed in the room like a weight.

I glanced toward the bedroom door.

“My brother-in-law is standing in my house?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“What do you mean, no?””

“He’s not supposed to be here.””

I almost laughed.

“Clearly, he disagrees.””

Another knock came.

Three slow knocks.

Lily jumped.

I immediately pulled her closer.

“Hey. Look at me.””

She looked up.

“You’re safe.””

She nodded, but I could see she was trying hard to believe me.

Vanessa moved toward the door.

I stopped her.

“Where are you going?””

“To talk to him.””

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“No.””

Her eyes flashed.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

“He’s dangerous.””

I stared at her.

The irony almost made me speechless.

“You knew he was dangerous, and you kept him near our daughter?””

Her face crumbled.

“I didn’t know how far he would go.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I was trying to protect Lily.””

“By hiding the truth?””

She looked down.

Because she knew.

She knew she had failed.

The sound of footsteps moved across the downstairs floor.

Slow.

Confident.

Like the person walking around my house belonged there.

My entire body tightened.

I reached for my phone.

Vanessa noticed.

“What are you doing?””

“Calling the police.””

“No.””

The desperation in her voice surprised me.

“Why not?””

“Because you don’t know what he wants.””

I looked at her.

“He’s in my house.””

“He wants a reaction.””

“What?””

“He wants you angry. He wants you to make a mistake.””

I stared at her.

“And how do you know that?””

She didn’t answer.

Again.

Another silence.

Another secret.

I stepped closer.

“How long have you been dealing with him?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Vanessa.””

“Months.””

My stomach dropped.

“Months?””

She nodded.

“He started contacting me after I refused to help him.””

“Help him with what?””

She swallowed.

“Money.””

I waited.

She looked at the floor.

“And something else.””

“What?””

“Daniel…”

“What?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He threatened to tell you about the accident.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“What accident?””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

Before she could answer, the voice downstairs spoke again.

“Vanessa.””

A pause.

“Don’t make me come upstairs.””

Lily grabbed my shirt.

I looked at her.

She was shaking.

And suddenly I understood something.

This wasn’t the first time she had heard that voice.

“Lily.””

She looked at me.

“Has he been here before?””

She froze.

That was enough.

I didn’t need an answer.

“Baby.””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“He came when you were away.””

My heart sank.

“How many times?””

She whispered:

“Three.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

I turned toward her.

“Three times?””

“I told you, I was handling it.””

“You were handling a man coming into our house while I wasn’t here?””

“I was trying to keep him away from you.””

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“You were trying to keep me away from the truth.””

The words hurt her.

I saw it.

But they were true.

The footsteps stopped.

Right outside Lily’s bedroom.

Nobody breathed.

The doorknob moved.

Slowly.

I stepped in front of Lily.

Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel.””

I kept my eyes on the door.

“What?””

“If he gets angry—”

“I know.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You don’t.””

The doorknob stopped turning.

Then Marcus spoke through the door.

“Vanessa.””

His voice was calm.

Almost friendly.

That scared me more.

“I know you’re in there.””

I said nothing.

“Daniel,” Marcus continued.

My jaw tightened.

He knew my name.

“I think we should talk.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked like she wanted to disappear.

“How does he know me?””

She whispered:

“He’s been watching.””

The anger I felt was immediate.

Not loud.

Not explosive.

Something colder.

Someone had been watching my family.

My daughter.

My home.

I stepped toward the door.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Tell me something.””

“What?””

“Did he hurt Lily?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.””

Those three words destroyed whatever patience I had left.

“You don’t know?””

“I wasn’t there every time.””

“Then why did you let him near her?””

“I didn’t!””

Her voice cracked.

“He found ways around me.””

Marcus laughed softly from outside.

A quiet laugh.

A confident laugh.

Like he was enjoying hearing us argue.

“Still lying, Vanessa?””

Her face changed.

She looked like she had seen a ghost.

I turned toward the door.

“Marcus.””

The hallway went silent.

Then:

“Yes, Daniel?””

My hand tightened into a fist.

“You know my family.””

“I know more than you think.””

“What do you want?””

A pause.

Then his answer.

“You.””

I felt Lily move behind me.

I kept my voice steady.

“Why?””

“Because you have something that belongs to me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What is he talking about?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus spoke again.

“The recorder.””

My eyes moved toward the tiny device sitting on the bed.

“How do you know about that?””

Silence.

Then:

“Because I know Lily hid it.””

My blood ran cold.

Lily whispered:

“He knows.””

I looked down at her.

“What?””

“He knows everything.””

Marcus knocked again.

“Daniel, open the door.””

“No.””

A quiet sigh came from the hallway.

“You really don’t want to make this difficult.””

I almost smiled.

“You’re threatening me in my own house.””

“No.””

His voice stayed calm.

“I’m warning you.””

“About what?””

A pause.

Then:

“About what happens when you hear the rest of that recording.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

Not because of Marcus.

Because of what he had just said.

“The rest?”” I asked.

Marcus answered:

“Yes.””

My heart started pounding.

“What rest?””

A moment of silence.

Then his voice lowered.

“The part where Lily tells the truth about what happened before the bruises.””

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

I turned toward her.

“What happened before the bruises?””

She looked at me.

Her face was full of regret.

“I was trying to tell you.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

“Why tonight?””

She didn’t answer.

The door handle moved again.

Marcus spoke.

“Daniel.””

I stared at the door.

“You have no idea what your wife has been hiding.””

My eyes went to Vanessa.

Then Lily.

Then the recorder.

Marcus continued:

“But before you judge her…”

A pause.

“She wasn’t the only one keeping secrets.””

The hallway went quiet.

I felt a chill run through me.

“What does that mean?””

No answer.

Instead, something slid underneath the bedroom door.

A photograph.

Slowly.

Across the floor.

I walked toward it.

Vanessa whispered:

“Don’t.””

But I picked it up.

The picture was old.

A family photo.

Me.

Vanessa.

Lily.

Taken two years ago.

My hands shook.

Because someone had drawn a red circle around one person in the picture.

Not Lily.

Not Vanessa.

Me.

May you like

And written three words across the back.

*Ask your daughter.*
