Chapter 7: The Child Who Was Missing From the Story
The house stayed silent after Marcus left.
Not peaceful.
Not safe.
Silent like something had been taken away.
I stood in the middle of Lily’s bedroom, staring at the closed door.
*She wasn’t the only child in that car.*
Those words kept repeating in my head.
Again.
Again.
Again.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked like she had aged ten years in a few seconds.
“Explain.””
She didn’t move.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I wanted to tell you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
Almost too quiet.
“You don’t get to say that anymore.””
She looked hurt.
But I couldn’t stop.
“Every time I ask for the truth, I find another locked door.””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter was sitting on the bed, holding her teddy bear.
Waiting.
Listening.
Like she had spent years waiting for adults to finally stop whispering around her.
“Not in front of Lily,” Vanessa said.
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because she’s already been through enough.””
I stared.
“You’re right.””
My voice softened.
“She has.””
I walked to the bed and sat beside Lily.
“Which is why nobody is keeping secrets from her anymore.””
Lily looked at me.
“Daddy…”
I held her hand.
“You’re not in trouble.””
She nodded.
“But I need you to tell me something.””
Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.
I squeezed her hand gently.
“Only if you’re ready.””
A long silence passed.
Then she whispered:
“There was another girl.””
My heart stopped.
“Another girl?””
Lily nodded.
“She was in the car.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She closed her eyes.
Like she already knew where this was going.
“Who was she?””
Lily looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“What do you mean?””
“I only heard her.””
My chest tightened.
“Heard her?””
Lily nodded.
“She was crying.””
The room became colder.
“What was she saying?””
Lily hugged her teddy bear.
“She kept saying she wanted her mommy.””
I swallowed.
“Did you see her?””
A small shake of her head.
“No.””
“Then how do you know she was there?””
“Because Daddy was talking to her.””
My breath caught.
“Me?””
She nodded.
“You kept saying, ‘Hold on, I’m going to help you.’”
A memory flashed.
A child crying.
My voice.
My hands.
A door opening.
Then nothing.
I closed my eyes.
Trying to grab onto it.
But it disappeared.
“Daniel?””
Vanessa’s voice pulled me back.
I opened my eyes.
“Who was the girl?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Vanessa.””
Her face broke.
“She was Marcus’s daughter.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
Lily looked confused.
“Marcus had a daughter?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Her name was Emma.””
The name felt strange.
But familiar.
Like hearing a song from childhood.
“Where is she?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Daniel…”
“Where is she?””
No answer.
I stood.
“Where is she?””
Vanessa whispered:
“She died.””
The room stopped.
Lily covered her mouth.
I stared at Vanessa.
“When?””
“The night of the accident.””
My heart dropped.
“Then why did Marcus say there was another child?””
“Because there was.””
I looked at the floor.
The accident.
The rain.
The car.
The missing memory.
It was all connected.
“What happened to Emma?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“I don’t know.””
I stared at her.
“What do you mean you don’t know?””
“I mean when the emergency crews arrived, she wasn’t there.””
The words made no sense.
“What?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Her seat was empty.””
I felt a chill.
“Are you saying she disappeared?””
“Yes.””
Lily whispered:
“Daddy saved her.””
I looked at my daughter.
“What?””
She looked scared.
“But Mommy said I wasn’t supposed to remember.””
Vanessa immediately turned.
“Lily.””
“No!””
My daughter’s voice cracked.
“I’m tired of forgetting!””
The sentence broke something inside me.
I knelt in front of her.
“You don’t have to forget anymore.””
She cried.
“I tried to tell you.””
“I know.””
“But Mommy said you’d get hurt.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What exactly did you tell her?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I thought she was too young.””
“She was eight.””
“She was seven.””
“She was old enough to be scared for two years.””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I know.””
For the first time, I believed she knew.
But knowing didn’t fix it.
“I need the whole story.””
Vanessa nodded.
Then she sat down.
“When you and I got married, Marcus was already struggling.””
I listened.
“He had problems. Money problems. Anger problems.””
“And you kept him away from us?””
“I tried.””
“But he came back.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because he blamed you.””
“For Emma?””
She nodded.
“He believed you caused the accident.””
I frowned.
“But I didn’t.””
“No.””
“Then why?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“Because he couldn’t accept that Emma ran into the road.””
I froze.
“Ran into the road?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
She looked down.
“The accident happened because Emma escaped from Marcus’s car.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“His car?””
She nodded.
“Marcus had picked her up from school.””
“Why?””
“Because he was her father.””
“That doesn’t answer the question.””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
Then back at me.
“Because he was angry.””
The word hung there.
Angry.
“He and Emma argued.””
My hands curled into fists.
“About what?””
“Money.””
I looked toward the window.
The bright sunlight suddenly felt wrong.
“How did she get into our car?””
Vanessa’s voice became smaller.
“She ran into the road.””
“And I stopped?””
“Yes.””
“You tried to help her.””
“Yes.””
“Then why don’t I remember?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because when Marcus arrived…”
She stopped.
I waited.
“He attacked you.””
My eyes narrowed.
“He attacked me?””
“He hit you.””
A flash.
A sound.
Someone yelling.
My head started pounding.
“He hit me?””
“Yes.””
“Then what?””
Vanessa looked away.
“He caused the second impact.””
My heart raced.
“The second impact?””
“The truck.””
I grabbed the back of a chair.
“The truck hit us.””
“Yes.””
The memory came closer.
A horn.
A bright light.
Lily screaming.
My hands reaching back.
Trying to protect her.
Trying to protect someone else.
“Where was Emma?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
That was the question she didn’t want to answer.
“Vanessa.””
She whispered:
“I don’t know.””
“You were there.””
“I know.””
“You saw everything.””
“I saw pieces.””
“Then tell me the pieces.””
She took a deep breath.
“After the crash, you got out first.””
I listened.
“You went to Emma.””
My heart stopped.
“You found her?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“You carried her.””
I closed my eyes.
A memory.
A little hand.
A voice.
“Daddy?””
I opened my eyes quickly.
“No.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You remembered something?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
But I had.
A tiny piece.
A voice that wasn’t Lily’s.
A child calling me Daddy.
Not because I was her father.
Because she was scared.
“What happened after I carried her?””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
“Lily was still in the car.””
My chest tightened.
“And Emma?””
“She was alive.””
The room went silent.
I stared.
“Alive?””
Vanessa nodded.
“For a few minutes.””
“Then?””
She looked at the door.
At the place where Marcus had stood.
“Then Marcus came.””
My voice became cold.
“What did he do?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“What did he do?””
Her tears fell.
“He took Emma.””
The room froze.
“What?””
“He picked her up.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“Where did he take her?””
“I don’t know.””
I stared at my wife.
“You’re telling me a child disappeared, and you never told anyone?””
Vanessa broke down.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“After the accident.””
“And?””
She shook her head.
“Marcus showed me something.””
“What?””
“A video.””
My blood ran cold.
“What video?””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“A video of you.””
“Doing what?””
Her voice trembled.
“Carrying Emma away from the crash.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“No.””
She looked terrified.
“Because the video was edited.””
Silence.
“He used it to make it look like you took her.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
Vanessa whispered:
“To make everyone believe you were responsible.””
I looked at the recorder.
The photograph.
The hidden secrets.
The missing memories.
Marcus hadn’t come back for money.
He hadn’t come back for control.
He had come back because he had spent two years building a story.
A story where I was the villain.
Then Lily’s recorder suddenly turned on.
Nobody touched it.
The battery should have been dead.
But the tiny speaker crackled.
A voice came through.
A child’s voice.
A voice I had never heard before.
“Daddy…”
Lily gasped.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
I froze.
Because the voice continued.
“Please don’t let him find me.””
My heart stopped.
The recording ended with a sound.
A door opening.
May you like
And a man’s voice whispering:
“Emma.””
