Chapter 9: The Second Recording
The message stayed on my phone.
*Don’t trust Vanessa.*
Four words.
Four words that should have meant nothing.
But after two years of secrets, lies, and missing memories, even a stranger’s warning could feel dangerous.
I looked at my wife.
She looked back at me.
And I hated that for the first time in our marriage, I couldn’t immediately know if she was telling the truth.
“Daniel,” Vanessa whispered.
I didn’t answer.
“Please.””
My eyes moved to the phone.
Then back to her.
“Why would he say that?””
She swallowed.
“Because he wants you to doubt me.””
“Is that true?””
The question hurt her.
I saw it.
But I needed to ask.
“Is it?””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“No, it’s not.””
I wanted to believe her.
I really did.
But belief was something Marcus had taken from this family.
He had turned every memory into a question.
Every person into a suspect.
Every truth into something hidden.
“Then we find the second recorder.””
Vanessa looked afraid.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
“You don’t know what’s on it.””
“That’s the point.””
“What if it changes everything?””
I looked at Lily.
“Everything already changed.””
My daughter was sitting quietly on the bed.
Too quietly.
I walked toward her.
“Hey.””
She looked up.
“Are you mad at Mommy?””
The question surprised me.
“No.””
She looked confused.
“But you’re angry.””
I sat beside her.
“I’m angry at what happened.””
“Not her?””
I thought about it.
Then answered honestly.
“I’m hurt by what she did.””
Lily looked down.
“I don’t want everyone to leave.””
My heart broke.
I held her hand.
“Baby, listen to me.””
She looked at me.
“Adults make mistakes.””
Behind me, Vanessa closed her eyes.
“But mistakes don’t mean we stop protecting each other.””
Lily nodded slowly.
“Are we going to find Emma?””
“Yes.””
Her eyes filled.
“Even if she’s scared?””
“Yes.””
“Even if she doesn’t remember us?””
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
Because that was the truth.
Emma wasn’t a mystery.
She was a child.
A child who had been missing while adults fought over blame.
I stood.
“Where’s the basement?””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
“Daniel…”
“Where?””
She pointed.
“Downstairs. Behind the laundry room.””
I walked out first.
Not because I was brave.
Because standing still felt worse.
The house looked exactly the same.
That was the strangest part.
The same family photos.
The same furniture.
The same walls.
A normal home hiding an impossible story.
I reached the basement door.
My hand rested on the handle.
For a second, I stopped.
A strange feeling passed through me.
Like I had stood there before.
Like my body remembered something my mind didn’t.
I opened the door.
The basement lights flickered on.
Dust.
Old boxes.
Holiday decorations.
Nothing unusual.
But then I saw it.
A mark on the wall.
A small scratch.
Three lines.
My fingers touched it.
And suddenly—
A flash.
A child’s voice.
“Daddy, look!””
A little girl laughing.
Not Lily.
Emma.
I pulled my hand back.
Vanessa noticed.
“What happened?””
I looked at the mark.
“I’ve been here before.””
She went pale.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“After the accident.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
She hesitated.
“You came down here looking for something.””
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
She shook her head.
“You were confused. You kept saying someone had hidden the truth.””
I looked around.
The basement suddenly felt different.
Not like storage.
Like a place where someone had buried evidence.
I searched through the shelves.
Boxes.
Old books.
Tools.
Nothing.
Then Lily spoke.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
She was standing near an old wooden cabinet.
“What?””
She pointed.
“There.””
I walked over.
A small gap behind the cabinet.
I moved it.
Something fell.
A black case.
My heart started racing.
I opened it.
Inside was a recorder.
Different from Lily’s.
Older.
Scratched.
Used.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I’ve never seen that.””
I looked at her.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
I picked it up.
A label was attached.
Written by hand.
*For Daniel.*
My fingers froze.
Someone had made this for me.
I pressed play.
Static.
Then my own voice.
My own voice.
Older.
Tired.
Broken.
“If you’re hearing this…”
I stopped breathing.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.””
I kept listening.
“If you’re hearing this, it means I forgot.””
My heart pounded.
The basement disappeared.
There was only my voice.
“I don’t know when you’ll find this. I don’t know who you trust.””
A pause.
Then:
“But remember this.””
My voice became quieter.
“Vanessa is not the person you need to be afraid of.””
I looked at my wife.
Her eyes filled.
The recording continued.
“She made mistakes. She hid things. But she was trying to protect Lily.””
I closed my eyes.
Marcus’s message flashed in my mind.
Don’t trust Vanessa.
The recording continued.
“The person you need to fear is Marcus.””
A pause.
“He wasn’t trying to punish me.””
My breathing slowed.
“He was trying to erase what happened.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying.
“What happened?””
My recorded voice answered.
“Emma survived.””
Everyone froze.
Lily gasped.
The recording continued.
“I found her.””
My heart stopped.
“You found her?””
Vanessa whispered.
I stared at the recorder.
My own voice.
“I found Emma after the crash. She was alive.””
A memory broke through.
My arms holding a small child.
A blanket.
A hospital hallway.
Someone saying:
“She needs a name.””
I grabbed the shelf.
The recording continued.
“Marcus tried to take her.””
My hands shook.
“He said if I didn’t let him, he would destroy our family.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“But I made a mistake.””
The words frightened me.
A mistake.
“What mistake?”” I whispered.
The recording answered.
“I believed I could handle him alone.””
Silence.
“I thought I could save everyone.””
My voice cracked.
“But Marcus was smarter than me.””
A pause.
Then:
“He created evidence.””
I looked at the recorder.
“Evidence of what?””
The answer came.
“Evidence that made it look like I kidnapped Emma.””
Vanessa gasped.
Lily held my hand.
The recording continued.
“If I ever forget, if anyone tells me I hurt Emma, remember this.””
A long pause.
Then my voice said:
“Find the hospital records.””
I froze.
“Hospital?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“What hospital?””
The recording continued.
“The truth is there.””
Then another sound.
A door opening.
Someone entering.
My recorded voice became urgent.
“If Marcus finds this…”
Static.
Then one final sentence.
“He already knows where Emma is.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
I stared at the device.
The answer was there.
Somewhere.
But one question remained.
“How did Marcus know?””
Vanessa looked at the recorder.
“I don’t know.””
I almost reacted.
Then stopped.
Because this time, I believed her.
A sound came from upstairs.
A phone ringing.
Not mine.
Not Vanessa’s.
Lily’s.
We all froze.
Her small backpack was sitting near the basement stairs.
I walked over slowly.
The phone inside was old.
One Lily didn’t use.
I pulled it out.
The screen showed one message.
From Marcus.
*You found my brother’s recording.*
My blood went cold.
My brother’s?
Then another message appeared.
*Now you know why I couldn’t let Daniel remember.*
I stared.
Another message.
*Because the night of the accident, Daniel didn’t save Emma alone.*
A final message appeared.
*He saved her with someone who was supposed to be dead.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
“Who?””
Her lips trembled.
“I don’t know.””
Then the phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A child’s voice came through.
Not Lily.
Not Emma.
A voice I had never heard.
“Mr. Daniel?””
I froze.
“Yes?””
The girl whispered:
“My name is Emma.””
My heart stopped.
Then she said:
“You have to find me before Marcus does.””
The call ended.
And in the silence that followed, I heard Vanessa whisper the words that made no sense.
“Daniel…”
I looked at her.
“What?””
She stared at the phone.
“That wasn’t Emma.””
A chill moved through me.
“Why?””
May you like
Her face turned pale.
“Because Emma died two years ago.””
