Chapter 8: The Girl Who Was Still Alive

The recording ended.

But nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The only sound in the room was Lily’s quiet breathing.

My mind refused to accept what I had just heard.

A child’s voice.

A girl calling me Daddy.

A girl begging me not to let someone find her.

Then a man saying one name.

*Emma.*

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face was completely empty.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Like she had just heard a ghost speak.

“Vanessa.””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes slowly lifted.

“She’s alive.””

The words came out like a question.

But I already knew.

The truth had been hiding in front of us.

All this time.

“Who?”” Lily whispered.

I looked at my daughter.

“Emma.””

Her eyes widened.

“The girl from the car?””

I nodded.

Lily covered her mouth.

“But Mommy said…”

She stopped.

She looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa looked away.

And that was when I understood.

Lily had been told one story.

Vanessa had been told another.

And Marcus had created a third.

A story where everyone was afraid to ask the right questions.

I picked up the recorder.

“How long have you known?””

Vanessa’s lips trembled.

“Daniel…”

“How long?””

She looked down.

“Six months.””

The answer hit me.

Six months.

Not years.

Not a few days.

Six months.

“You knew Emma might be alive?””

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

She started crying.

“I received a message.””

“From who?””

She hesitated.

“Marcus.””

I stared.

“Marcus told you?””

“He sent me a picture.””

My heart tightened.

“What picture?””

She reached for her phone with shaking hands.

For a moment, I thought she wouldn’t show me.

Then she unlocked it.

She opened a hidden folder.

And there it was.

A photo.

A young girl sitting on a couch.

Older than she would have been in my memories.

But I recognized her.

Not because I remembered her face.

Because I remembered the voice.

Emma.

My fingers went cold.

“She’s alive,” I whispered.

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where is she?””

“I don’t know.””

“Vanessa.””

“I don’t know!””

Her voice broke.

“She moved her after sending the picture.””

“Who?””

“Marcus.””

I looked at the screen again.

“Why would he show you proof she’s alive?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because he wanted something.””

“What?””

“Money.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because somehow everything came back to the same thing.

Money.

Control.

Fear.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“I paid him.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

“I thought if I gave him what he wanted, he would leave us alone.””

“You paid him?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

She looked away.

“Enough.””

My jaw tightened.

“And he still came here.””

“Yes.””

“Because money was never the goal.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“No.””

I stared at the photo.

“The goal was me.””

She nodded.

“He wanted you to take responsibility.””

“For what?””

Her voice dropped.

“For Emma disappearing.””

I looked toward the bedroom door.

Marcus had built his entire life around a lie.

But why?

Then I remembered something.

The photograph.

The red circle around me.

The words.

Ask your daughter.

He didn’t want me to know the truth.

He wanted me to doubt myself.

“Where did you get the recorder?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked confused.

“What?””

“The recorder.””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at Lily.

“Baby?””

She looked nervous.

“I found it.””

“Where?””

“In the basement.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“The basement?””

She nodded.

“After Mommy told me not to talk about Emma.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Lily…”

“I wanted to know if Daddy was telling the truth.””

I knelt beside her.

“What do you mean?””

She looked at me.

“Sometimes you would say her name when you slept.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“You said, ‘I’m sorry.’”

The room went silent.

I remembered waking up from nightmares.

The dreams I never understood.

A child crying.

A road.

A crash.

I always thought they were random.

But they weren’t.

My brain had been trying to tell me something.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Mommy said you were healing.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She nodded slowly.

“You were having nightmares.””

“And you knew?””

“Yes.””

“You knew I was remembering pieces.””

“Yes.””

“Then why keep hiding it?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at me.

“Of what you would remember.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

She took a breath.

“After the accident, you kept asking about Emma.””

“Because I wanted to find her.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“You also kept asking about something else.””

“What?””

Vanessa’s voice became barely audible.

“About why you were driving.””

I frowned.

“What about it?””

“You didn’t remember.””

“I know.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You didn’t remember because Marcus changed the story.””

“What story?””

“That he was the one who caused the crash.””

I looked at her.

“He did.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did I think I was responsible?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because someone made you believe it.””

“Who?””

Her silence answered.

I felt my stomach drop.

“Me?””

Vanessa nodded.

Not because she blamed me.

Because she was afraid of the memory.

“What did I do?””

“You didn’t do anything.””

“Then why?””

“Because Marcus threatened Lily.””

I looked at my daughter.

“What?””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“After the accident, Marcus told me if I didn’t convince you to stop searching for Emma, he would hurt Lily.””

My fists tightened.

“And you believed him.””

“I saw what he was capable of.””

“So you lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe I was responsible.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because you were alive.””

I stopped.

She continued.

“You were alive. Lily was alive. And Marcus was gone.””

“That’s not enough.””

“I know.””

She looked at me.

“I know now.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.

I looked at Lily.

She was watching us.

Trying to understand adult choices that never should have involved her.

I sat beside her.

“Emma is alive.””

She nodded.

“Can we find her?””

The question was so simple.

So innocent.

And it made my answer obvious.

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I stood.

“We’re finding her.””

“You don’t know what Marcus will do.””

“I don’t care.””

“That’s exactly what he wants.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“He wants you angry.””

I thought about that.

Then I looked at Lily.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“He wants me scared.””

Vanessa went quiet.

“And I’ve spent two years being scared of something I didn’t even remember.””

I picked up the recorder.

“Not anymore.””

Then my phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

My stomach tightened.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*You found the recording. Good. Now find the second one.*

Below it was a photo.

A basement.

Our basement.

And in the corner of the image was something I recognized immediately.

A second recorder.

But the message wasn’t finished.

Another line appeared.

*This one tells you what really happened after the crash.*

I stared at the screen.

Vanessa saw it.

Her face changed.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

She whispered:

“He knows you found the first one.””

I looked at the photo.

The basement.

The hidden recorder.

The secrets buried inside our own home.

Then another message appeared.

This time only four words.

*Don’t trust Vanessa.*

I looked up.

She was already crying.

May you like

And for the first time, I wondered if Marcus was lying.

Or if he was finally telling the truth.
