Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Secret

Tiana couldn’t move.

The words on the wall stared back at her.

*Trust no one.*

And beneath them, carved deeply into the old concrete, was a name.

*Daniel Brooks.*

For three years, that name had represented safety.

Guidance.

Family.

Now it felt like a stranger’s name.

Her phone was still pressed against her ear.

“Tiana?””

Daniel’s voice came through again.

“Are you there?””

She couldn’t answer.

Not because she didn’t know what to say.

Because suddenly, every answer felt dangerous.

Victor watched her carefully.

“You understand now.””

Tiana slowly lowered the phone.

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

But it carried anger.

“I don’t understand anything.””

Victor nodded.

“That’s what makes this difficult.””

She turned toward him.

“You knew.””

“I suspected.””

“You suspected my coach betrayed my father, and you said nothing?””

Victor’s expression hardened.

“I suspected Daniel was hiding something. I did not know the truth.””

“But you knew enough.””

“Yes.””

“And you still waited?””

Victor looked away.

“Your father asked me to.””

That answer made her furious.

“Everyone keeps using my father’s name to explain why they lied to me.””

She stepped closer.

“My father is gone. He doesn’t get to make decisions for me anymore.””

Victor didn’t argue.

Because he knew she was right.

For the first time, Tiana saw something different in him.

Not the confidence of a rival.

Not the coldness of a businessman.

Regret.

“I made mistakes too,” Victor said quietly.

Tiana stared.

“What kind of mistakes?””

“The kind that hurt people who trusted me.””

Before she could ask more, the sound of footsteps echoed through the arena.

Both of them turned.

Daniel stood at the entrance.

His face was pale.

“Tiana.””

She felt something break inside her.

Not because he was there.

Because he looked guilty.

For years, Daniel had always looked strong.

Unshakable.

Now he looked like someone who had been carrying a heavy secret for too long.

“Why are you here?””

Daniel glanced at Victor.

Then back at her.

“Because I knew you would come here.””

“How?””

Silence.

That was the answer.

Tiana’s expression changed.

“You’re still hiding things.””

Daniel took a step forward.

“Please listen to me.””

“No.””

Her voice stopped him.

“You had three years to explain.””

“Tiana—”

“You watched me believe my father was the reason our lives fell apart.””

Daniel looked down.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“You keep saying that.””

Her voice cracked slightly.

“But every person who lies to me says the same thing.””

The arena became silent.

Victor stepped back.

This was not his conversation.

This was between teacher and student.

Between a girl and the man she once trusted most.

Daniel slowly walked toward the ring.

The old training area where Tiana had spent thousands of hours.

Where he had taught her every movement.

Every technique.

Every lesson about discipline.

He touched the edge of the mat.

“Your father was my best friend.””

Tiana didn’t respond.

“He wasn’t perfect.””

She looked up.

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Because it was the first honest thing anyone had said.

Daniel continued.

“Adrian was brilliant. But he believed he could fix everything himself.””

“What did he do?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“He created a program.””

“What kind of program?””

“A training system.””

Tiana frowned.

“My father trained athletes.””

“Not just athletes.””

Daniel looked at her.

“He studied competition patterns. He analyzed judges. He predicted outcomes.””

“That doesn’t sound wrong.””

“It wasn’t.””

“Then what happened?””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“People with money noticed.””

Tiana understood.

“The Vale family?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

She already knew.

“They used him.””

Daniel nodded.

“At first, Adrian thought he was helping improve the sport. He believed the system could make competitions fairer.””

“And?””

“And powerful people realized they could use it to control results.””

The words settled heavily.

Tiana looked at Victor.

“And you?””

Victor stepped forward.

“I was one of the people who benefited from it.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Meaning?””

“I knew something was wrong. I didn’t ask enough questions because winning was easier than knowing the truth.””

Daniel looked at him.

“That was your mistake.””

Victor accepted the accusation.

“Yes.””

Tiana looked between them.

“So both of you knew.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not everything.””

“Then what did you know?””

Daniel hesitated.

“We knew someone inside the organization was manipulating matches.””

“And you did nothing?””

His silence was painful.

Tiana looked away.

The people she respected most had failed her.

Not because they were monsters.

Because they were afraid.

Later that evening, Tiana sat outside the gym.

The sun was disappearing behind the buildings.

Daniel stood nearby.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

Finally, he said:

“You have every right to hate me.””

Tiana looked at him.

“I don’t hate you.””

Daniel seemed surprised.

“Then what do you feel?””

She looked down at her hands.

“Disappointed.””

That hurt him more.

“I can accept anger.””

“I know.””

“But disappointment means I trusted you.””

Daniel looked away.

“I know.””

She held the letter from her father.

“Why did he write your name?””

Daniel was quiet.

Then he answered.

“Because I was the person closest to him.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It is.””

Tiana frowned.

Daniel continued.

“Your father trusted me more than anyone. If something happened to him, I would be the first person people looked at.””

“But why would he write it?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because he knew I would do anything to protect you.””

“That sounds like a good thing.””

“It wasn’t always.””

The answer surprised her.

Daniel sat beside her.

“Your father discovered who was behind the manipulation.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the road.

“The person funding everything.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“The same person who ordered your father to stay silent.””

Tiana felt a chill.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Your grandfather.””

The world seemed to stop.

“My grandfather?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother’s father.””

Tiana stared.

She barely remembered him.

He had disappeared from their lives when she was young.

She always thought it was because of family problems.

“You’re saying my own family was involved?””

“I’m saying there are things your father wanted to reveal.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“Because the person who would be hurt most was you.””

That night, Tiana returned home and searched through old family boxes.

She found photographs.

Letters.

Documents.

Things she had never looked at before.

Then she found something hidden inside an old book.

A small envelope.

Her name was written on it.

Not her father’s handwriting.

Someone else’s.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A picture of her father.

Standing beside a woman Tiana recognized immediately.

Her mother.

But there was something strange.

Her mother was holding a document.

On the back of the photo, there was a message.

*The truth started with your mother, not your father.*

Tiana stared.

Her mother had died when she was young.

She had always been told it was an accident.

A sudden illness.

Nothing more.

Then her phone vibrated.

Another unknown number.

A message appeared.

*You’re looking in the wrong direction, Tiana.*

She frowned.

Another message arrived.

*Your father didn’t disappear because he was exposed.*

Her heartbeat increased.

A final message appeared.

*He disappeared because he was trying to save your mother’s secret.*

Tiana looked at the photograph again.

Her mother.

Her father.

A secret.

And suddenly, the story she had believed for her entire life began falling apart.

Then the sender’s name appeared.

A name she had never expected.

*Adrian Reed.*

Her missing father.

May you like

And below it was one sentence.

*Meet me tomorrow if you want to know why I left you.*
