Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Everything
Tiana couldn’t speak.
The woman standing in front of her was someone she had known her entire life.
Someone who brought her birthday gifts when she was a child.
Someone who sat beside her during hospital visits.
Someone who held her hand when her mother died.
Aunt Clara.
The person who always told Tiana:
“You’re never alone.””
Now she stood in the old gym and admitted she had been part of the biggest secret in Tiana’s life.
“No.””
The word escaped Tiana’s mouth before she even realized she said it.
Clara’s eyes filled with sadness.
“I know how it sounds.””
“No.””
Tiana stepped backward.
“You’re lying.””
Clara looked down.
“I wish I was.””
Daniel stood frozen.
Even he looked shocked.
“You?””
Clara turned toward him.
“Yes.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“How?””
“How what?””
“How could you?””
Clara swallowed.
“Because I was there when everything happened.””
Tiana looked at the document on the table.
Her father’s signature.
A date.
The day he disappeared.
“What is this?””
Clara looked at the paper.
“The agreement your father made before he left.””
“Agreement?””
“Yes.””
Tiana picked it up.
The words blurred for a moment.
She forced herself to read.
*Adrian Reed agrees to disappear from public life until the investigation is complete. His daughter will remain protected under the care of Clara Bennett.*
Her hands shook.
“Protected?””
She looked up.
“Protected from who?””
Nobody answered.
That scared her more.
“Answer me.””
Clara took a breath.
“From the people who wanted your father gone.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“You were a child, Tiana.””
“I was fifteen.””
“You were still his daughter.””
Tiana laughed bitterly.
“So everyone decided to make choices for me?””
No one spoke.
That silence told her everything.
Clara walked slowly toward the table.
“When your father discovered the corruption, he thought exposing it would be enough.””
Daniel nodded.
“He was wrong.””
Clara looked at him.
“Yes.””
Tiana noticed the exchange.
“You both knew.””
Daniel looked away.
Clara continued.
“The people involved had power. Money. Connections.””
“Like my grandfather?””
“Yes.””
“Like Mason’s father?””
“Yes.””
Tiana looked at Mason.
He looked uncomfortable.
For once, he wasn’t defending his family.
Because he was starting to understand what his family had done.
Clara continued.
“Your father realized he couldn’t win by fighting them publicly.””
“So he disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“And you helped him.””
“Yes.””
Tiana stared.
“Then why does everyone say he abandoned me?””
Clara’s eyes became wet.
“Because that was the only way to keep you alive.””
The words hit her.
Not because she believed them.
Because a small part of her wanted to.
She wanted an explanation.
She wanted a reason.
Anything that made the pain make sense.
“But you stayed.””
Clara nodded.
“I promised him I would.””
“You promised him?””
“Yes.””
“What about me?””
Clara looked at her.
“I promised you too.””
Tiana’s voice became quiet.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Clara had no answer.
The gym fell silent.
Then Mason spoke.
“So my father knew all of this?””
Everyone looked at him.
Clara nodded.
“Yes.””
His face changed.
“How?””
“Because he was one of the people your father was investigating.””
Mason looked away.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does.””
“No.””
His voice became louder.
“My father wouldn’t—”
Clara interrupted.
“He would.””
Mason stopped.
Nobody had ever spoken to him that directly.
Not even his own father.
“You think knowing someone your whole life means you know everything about them,” Clara said.
“But sometimes the people closest to us are the ones who hide the most.””
Tiana looked at Daniel.
Then Clara.
Then Mason.
Everyone in the room had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
Everyone had hurt her.
Clara reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small box.
“I have something else.””
Tiana stared.
“What?””
“Something your father wanted you to have when you were ready.””
She opened the box.
Inside was a small necklace.
Tiana immediately recognized it.
Her mother wore it every day.
“My mother’s.””
Clara nodded.
“Your father gave it to me before he disappeared.””
“Why?””
“Because it contains something important.””
Tiana took the necklace.
It looked ordinary.
A simple silver chain.
Then Clara pressed a small hidden piece near the pendant.
A tiny compartment opened.
Inside was a small memory card.
Tiana stared.
“What is this?””
“Evidence.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Clara.””
She looked at him.
“It’s time.””
Daniel didn’t argue.
Tiana noticed.
That scared her.
Because Daniel was finally accepting that the truth had to come out.
“What’s on it?””
Clara looked at her.
“The reason your father disappeared.””
They moved to a small office inside the gym.
Daniel connected the memory card to an old computer.
The screen flickered.
A video appeared.
The quality was poor.
But Tiana recognized the person immediately.
Her father.
Adrian Reed.
Older than the last memory she had.
Tired.
Serious.
He looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, Tiana, then the truth has reached you.””
Her eyes immediately filled.
Hearing his voice after three years was harder than she expected.
“I’m sorry.””
Two words.
Simple.
Painful.
“I know you will ask why I left.””
He paused.
“I left because I failed.””
Tiana looked confused.
Her father continued.
“I thought I could fix a broken system from inside it. I thought working with powerful people would allow me to change things.””
He looked down.
“I was wrong.””
The video continued.
“I helped create something that became dangerous.””
Daniel lowered his head.
Tiana noticed.
Her father’s voice continued.
“But when I tried to stop it, I discovered the people involved had already planned for that.””
A document appeared on screen.
Names.
Companies.
Payments.
Records.
Tiana stared.
“This is impossible.””
Clara whispered:
“It’s real.””
Her father continued.
“The person who controls everything is not the person you expect.””
The screen showed a file.
A name.
Tiana leaned closer.
Then froze.
Because the name was not Mason’s father.
Not her grandfather.
Not Daniel.
It was someone else.
Someone whose existence she had forgotten.
Someone who had disappeared from her life years ago.
Her mother’s brother.
Her uncle.
The man everyone said left the country.
The man nobody mentioned.
Adrian’s voice continued.
“He was the one who started the operation.””
Tiana couldn’t breathe.
“Why?””
Her father answered as if he knew she would ask.
“Because he believed martial arts was not about honor.””
A pause.
“He believed it was about control.””
The video showed more documents.
More evidence.
Then Adrian looked directly into the camera.
“But he wasn’t alone.””
Tiana’s heart sank.
“There were people who helped him.””
The screen changed.
A list of names appeared.
Tiana scanned them.
Then stopped.
Because one name was highlighted.
A name she recognized.
A name that made Daniel stand suddenly.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel’s face had lost all color.
“What?””
He stepped closer to the screen.
“That’s impossible.””
Tiana looked at the name.
“Who is it?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Clara covered her mouth.
Mason stared.
The person behind everything was someone they never suspected.
Someone who had been hiding in plain sight.
Someone with access to every secret.
Someone who knew Tiana’s family better than anyone.
The video ended with Adrian’s final words.
*“Tiana, if you found this, then I need you to understand one thing.””*
The screen went black.
Then his voice played one last time.
*“The person you are about to meet is the reason I disappeared.””*
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then the gym door suddenly opened.
A familiar voice echoed through the room.
“Actually…”
Everyone turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
A man Tiana hadn’t seen since she was a child.
Her uncle.
May you like
He smiled faintly.
“…I’m the reason your father survived.””
