Chapter 7: The Teacher Who Hid the Truth

The old gym looked exactly the same.

The faded walls.

The worn wooden floor.

The punching bags hanging from the ceiling.

The place where Tiana had spent countless hours learning how to fight.

But tonight, it felt different.

It no longer felt like home.

It felt like a place filled with secrets.

Tiana stood outside the entrance, staring at the door.

Her father’s warning echoed in her mind.

*Daniel already knows you know the truth.*

She knew she shouldn’t be there.

Every instinct told her to leave.

But she also knew something else.

Running had never solved anything.

Not three years ago.

Not now.

She opened the door.

The familiar sound of her footsteps filled the empty gym.

“Coach?””

No answer.

She walked farther inside.

The training mats were empty.

The lights above flickered.

Then she heard a voice.

“You came.””

Tiana turned.

Daniel stood near the old equipment room.

His face looked tired.

Older than it had a few days ago.

Like he had finally stopped pretending everything was fine.

“You knew.””

Daniel didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised her.

“You knew my father was alive?””

“Yes.””

Her chest tightened.

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Daniel looked down.

“No.””

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because Adrian asked me not to.””

Tiana shook her head.

“I don’t want to hear that anymore.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I know.””

“You always have a reason.””

“I do.””

“And somehow, your reasons always leave me hurt.””

That sentence hit him.

Because he knew she was right.

“I deserve that.””

Tiana stepped closer.

“Tell me the truth.””

Daniel stayed silent.

“Not a version that protects me.””

She stared into his eyes.

“Not a version that protects my father.””

A pause.

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel walked toward the center of the gym.

The same place where Tiana had learned her first fighting stance.

“Your father and I met when we were young.””

Tiana listened.

“He was better than me.””

That surprised her.

Daniel smiled slightly.

“He always was.””

“You never told me that.””

“He didn’t like people praising him.””

She almost smiled.

Almost.

Daniel continued.

“We both wanted to change martial arts. We believed discipline and skill should matter more than money.””

“And then?””

“Then powerful people noticed.””

He looked at the walls.

“Your grandfather was one of them.””

Tiana’s expression hardened.

“He used my father.””

“Yes.””

“And you helped.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer was painful because it came so easily.

“You admit it?””

“I should have admitted it years ago.””

Tiana stared at him.

“Why didn’t you?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

The word surprised her.

Daniel was never ashamed.

He was the strongest person she knew.

But now he looked broken.

“I helped create something that was supposed to improve the sport.””

“What was it?””

“A ranking system.””

“That doesn’t sound dangerous.””

“It wasn’t at first.””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“But then people learned they could manipulate it.””

“By controlling competitions?””

“Yes.””

Tiana looked away.

“And my father found out.””

“He did.””

“What did he do?””

“He tried to expose everyone involved.””

“Including you?””

Daniel went quiet.

That was the answer.

Tiana felt her heart sink.

“You were involved.””

“At the beginning.””

“But you stayed.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because I was afraid.””

The honesty was almost worse.

“You were afraid?””

“Yes.””

“For yourself?””

Daniel shook his head.

“For you.””

Tiana laughed quietly.

“That’s your answer for everything.””

“I know.””

“But maybe it’s true.””

She looked at him.

“Maybe you were protecting me.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“But I was also protecting myself.””

Silence.

That was the first time he admitted it.

Tiana walked toward the old training ring.

“You wrote my father’s name on that wall.””

Daniel froze.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted you to know I wasn’t innocent.””

She turned.

“But you wanted me to think you were.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You let me believe my father abandoned me.””

Daniel looked down.

“I thought it was better than knowing he was hiding.””

“Was it?””

He had no answer.

Tiana looked at him.

“You were my family.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“And you lied.””

“I know.””

She looked away.

For the first time, she didn’t know whether she wanted an apology.

Some wounds didn’t disappear just because someone admitted causing them.

A sound came from outside.

Both of them turned.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?””

He moved toward the door.

Tiana noticed.

“You expected someone.””

“No.””

But he didn’t sound convincing.

The door opened.

A man stepped inside.

Mason.

Tiana looked surprised.

“What are you doing here?””

Mason looked at Daniel.

“I need answers.””

Daniel’s face became serious.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Mason laughed bitterly.

“That’s what everyone says when they don’t want me to know something.””

Tiana looked between them.

“How did you find this place?””

Mason hesitated.

“My father.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“He told you?””

“Not everything.””

Mason walked closer.

“But enough.””

He looked at Tiana.

“He knows your father is alive.””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

Mason nodded.

“My father has known for years.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Mason looked at him.

“It isn’t.””

The room became silent.

Tiana looked at Daniel.

“You knew?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

But Mason continued.

“My father said Adrian Reed was the biggest threat to everything they built.””

Tiana felt cold.

“Who is ‘they’?””

Mason looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

His voice changed.

“My father has meetings. Secret meetings. People from different companies. Different organizations.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What else?””

Mason looked at him.

“He said one name.””

Everyone froze.

“Whose name?””

Mason looked at Tiana.

“Your name.””

Her heart stopped.

“Me?””

“He said if you ever discovered the truth, everything would fall apart.””

A phone rang.

Everyone looked toward Daniel.

His phone.

He pulled it out.

The screen showed an unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

Nobody could hear the voice on the other end.

But Daniel’s expression changed.

Slowly.

Fear replaced everything else.

“What did you say?””

A pause.

“No.””

Another pause.

“That’s impossible.””

Tiana watched him.

“Who is it?””

Daniel ignored her.

“Where?””

Silence.

Then:

“I’ll come.””

He ended the call.

Mason frowned.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at Tiana.

His eyes were filled with regret.

“Your father was right.””

Her stomach tightened.

“About what?””

Daniel looked at the old training room.

“The person who betrayed your family isn’t someone from the outside.””

A pause.

“It’s someone who has been protecting you.””

Tiana felt the air leave her lungs.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because the gym door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Tiana froze.

She knew that face.

Everyone in the martial arts world knew that face.

Her mother’s closest friend.

The woman who helped raise her after her mother died.

The woman Daniel always said she could trust.

She looked at Tiana with tears in her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

Tiana stared.

“Why are you here?””

The woman looked at Daniel.

Then at Mason.

Then back at Tiana.

“Because you deserve to know the truth.””

Her voice shook.

“The person who betrayed your father wasn’t Daniel.””

Tiana stopped breathing.

The woman stepped closer.

“It was me.””

The gym fell silent.

And then she placed an old document on the table.

A document signed by Adrian Reed.

A document that proved one thing.

Tiana’s father had not been betrayed by a stranger.

He had been betrayed by the person he trusted with his daughter’s life.

Her mother’s best friend.

The person who raised her.

The person who had been watching her every day for three years.

May you like

And underneath the signature was a date.

The day Adrian Reed disappeared.
