Chapter 14: The Last Lie

My father insisted he had no intention of meeting Ethan.

Detective Harris checked his phone, passport, and recent financial transactions.

Nothing indicated that he had booked a flight.

But the passenger manifest remained unchanged.

"Someone used my identity," Dad said.

Detective Harris nodded.

"That appears to be the case.""

Vanessa examined the aircraft registration.

"There's a corporate address attached to this company.""

"Where?"" I asked.

"New Jersey. An industrial property owned by the same holding company.""

My father looked at the address.

"I know that building.""

"How?""

"It was one of the properties my company sold years ago.""

I stared at him.

"The building connected to your old business records?""

He nodded.

"Daniel used to manage it.""

Detective Harris made a call.

"We need officers at that location immediately.""

I looked at Madison.

She was sitting on the sofa with Emily asleep against her shoulder.

Oliver was still missing.

"Can you stay with her?"" I asked.

Madison nodded.

"I won't let anyone take my children again.""

I hesitated.

"Madison, I need to ask you something.""

She looked up.

"What?""

"Did you know Ethan was going to leave the country?""

Her eyes filled.

"No.""

"Did you know he was going to use my father's identity?""

"No.""

I watched her carefully.

Then I asked, "Why did you put on my ring?""

Madison lowered her eyes.

"Because I wanted to believe Ethan would choose me.""

"Even knowing he was marrying me for money?""

She nodded.

"I thought once everything was settled, he'd finally admit he loved me.""

I looked at the sleeping child.

"And now?""

She brushed Emily's hair away from her forehead.

"Now I know he never loved either of us enough to tell the truth.""

I didn't forgive her.

Not then.

But I understood that she had finally stopped defending him.

Detective Harris returned.

"We're heading to the industrial property.""

My father stood.

"I'm coming.""

"No," I said.

He looked at me.

"Dad, you've spent thirty years letting other people decide what happens to your family. Let the police do their job.""

He nodded reluctantly.

Vanessa and I followed the officers in a separate vehicle.

The industrial building stood behind a row of warehouses.

A security guard opened the gate after Detective Harris showed his badge.

Inside, we found several filing cabinets, computer equipment, and boxes marked with the names of old companies.

One office door was open.

Ethan stood beside a desk.

Daniel was sitting in a leather chair.

Between them was a suitcase.

Neither looked surprised when we entered.

Ethan smiled.

"Claire.""

I stopped at the doorway.

"Where is Oliver?""

Daniel closed his laptop.

"He's safe.""

"Where?""

"That's not important.""

I stepped forward.

"It is to me.""

Ethan gestured toward the suitcase.

"We can resolve everything today.""

Detective Harris ordered both men to keep their hands visible.

Daniel laughed.

"You don't have jurisdiction over the financial agreement.""

"We have jurisdiction over suspected fraud and the disappearance of a child," Harris replied.

Daniel's smile disappeared.

I looked at Ethan.

"Why did you put my father's name on the flight manifest?""

"Because I needed him here.""

"For what?""

Ethan pulled a folder from the desk.

"Your grandmother's second account.""

I shook my head.

"You already tried to access it.""

"Not the entire account.""

He opened the folder.

Inside were several pages from the original beneficiary agreement.

"Your grandmother left an additional authorization provision. If the primary beneficiary refuses to act, the family representative can request emergency access.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"That provision was removed.""

"From the version you saw," Daniel replied.

He smiled.

"Your grandmother wasn't the only one keeping copies.""

I looked at the papers.

The document appeared genuine.

But the signature was different.

"Who signed this?""

Ethan answered.

"Your father.""

I turned toward him.

"My father never signed that.""

Daniel leaned back.

"He did. Twenty years ago.""

My stomach tightened.

Vanessa examined the document.

"There's a problem with this authorization.""

Daniel frowned.

"What?""

"The date.""

She pointed to the bottom.

"This document was supposedly signed in 2006. But the notary stamp belongs to a notary who wasn't commissioned until 2011.""

Detective Harris smiled faintly.

"That's interesting.""

Daniel's expression changed.

Ethan looked at the paper.

"Daniel?""

The older man stood.

"Don't look at me. You approved it.""

Ethan stepped backward.

"You said it was legitimate.""

Daniel slammed his hand against the desk.

"Because you needed it to be!""

Their argument grew louder.

I looked at Ethan.

"Did you know the document was fake?""

He said nothing.

"Answer me.""

He finally nodded.

"I knew it wasn't perfect.""

I stared at him.

"You were willing to put my father in prison.""

"I was trying to save everyone.""

"No. You were trying to save yourself.""

Daniel suddenly grabbed the suitcase.

Detective Harris shouted.

"Put it down!""

Daniel ran toward the back exit.

An officer blocked him.

He turned and shoved a filing cabinet aside.

Papers spilled everywhere.

Another officer caught his arm.

Within seconds, Daniel was on the floor in handcuffs.

Ethan didn't move.

He simply stared at the desk.

Detective Harris approached him.

"Ethan Bennett, you're being detained in connection with the suspected financial fraud and identity misuse.""

Ethan looked at me.

"Claire, tell them this was a misunderstanding.""

I shook my head.

"You had three years to tell me the truth.""

He stepped toward me.

"Please. We can still fix this.""

I looked at his expensive suit, his polished shoes, and the watch I had given him for our second anniversary.

I remembered the rooftop proposal.

The candlelit dinners.

The promises.

And the woman who had stood in the chapel wearing my ring.

"No, Ethan. We can't.""

He lowered his voice.

"Your father isn't innocent either.""

I frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

Daniel, now seated beside the wall, began laughing.

"Tell her, Ethan.""

Ethan looked furious.

"Shut up.""

Daniel continued.

"Tell her why Robert really signed those documents.""

I turned toward Ethan.

"Why?""

He swallowed.

"Because your father knew about the first transfer.""

My heart pounded.

"What first transfer?""

Ethan looked at me.

"The two hundred thousand dollars from your grandmother's account.""

I stared at him.

"That money was stolen.""

"Not exactly.""

He took a breath.

"Your father received it.""

My hands went cold.

Vanessa looked at the bank records again.

"Robert denied receiving the money.""

Ethan shook his head.

"He received it through a business account. Then he transferred it back to Daniel.""

I felt sick.

"Why?""

"Because he was trying to protect Rachel.""

I turned toward the detective.

"Is that true?""

He didn't answer.

Ethan continued.

"Your father knew Rachel was alive. He helped her financially. When your grandfather threatened to expose her, Robert agreed to keep her identity secret.""

I looked at the photograph of Rachel.

"That still doesn't explain the money.""

Ethan lowered his voice.

"Your grandmother was going to reveal everything. Robert wanted to stop her because he was afraid your mother would find out.""

I shook my head.

"You're lying.""

"Ask him.""

Detective Harris received a call.

He listened for several seconds.

Then his expression changed.

"Claire, we need to get back to the house.""

"Why?""

"Your father has just arrived.""

I frowned.

"He's supposed to be with the police.""

The detective looked at me.

"That's the problem.""

He showed me a security photograph.

My father was entering Patricia's house.

And he was carrying a small black suitcase.
