Chapter 9: The Family Secret
I called Madison immediately.
She answered on the first ring.
"Claire?""
"Where are you?""
A pause.
"Somewhere safe.""
"Stop playing games. What did Grandma never tell me about my father?""
Madison exhaled.
"Did you find the photograph?""
"Yes.""
"Then you know about Rachel.""
"I know you're her daughter.""
"There's more.""
I looked at my father.
He was standing beside the desk, holding the photograph with both hands.
"Tell me.""
Madison lowered her voice.
"Rachel wasn't simply adopted. She was forced to leave.""
"By whom?""
"Your grandfather.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because he discovered she was pregnant before your grandmother's marriage.""
I looked at the birth certificate again.
The father's name was blank.
Madison continued.
"Your grandfather didn't want a child from another relationship interfering with the family business. He arranged for Rachel to be adopted and told everyone she had died.""
My father looked up.
"That's not true.""
I turned toward him.
"You knew?""
He shook his head.
"I knew about Rachel. I didn't know she was alive.""
Madison laughed bitterly through the phone.
"That's convenient.""
I ignored her.
"Why did Grandma never tell me?""
"Because she spent most of her life trying to find Rachel. When she finally did, Rachel was already married and had a daughter.""
I looked at the photograph.
"Madison.""
"Yes.""
I struggled to understand.
"So Grandma added you to the trust because you were family?""
"She wanted to make things right.""
"Then why did you help Ethan?""
Madison was silent.
I waited.
Finally, she spoke.
"Because I was angry.""
"At me?""
"At everyone.""
Her voice cracked.
"Your grandmother gave you everything. Your father raised you with all the opportunities Rachel never had. You grew up in the family home, went to the best schools, and never had to wonder whether you belonged.""
I stared at the phone.
"I didn't know you were related to us.""
"Neither did I. Not until Patricia told me.""
"How did Patricia find out?""
"She hired someone to investigate the trust. She discovered Rachel's identity and used it to approach me.""
My stomach tightened.
"She offered you money?""
"She offered to help me secure Oliver's future.""
"And you agreed to steal from me?""
Madison started crying.
"I didn't think it would happen like this.""
"You put my ring on your finger.""
"I know.""
"You slept with my fiancé.""
"I know.""
"You signed documents using my name.""
"I know, Claire!""
Her voice broke.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.
"Did you ever love me?""
Madison sobbed.
"Yes.""
"Then why?""
"Because I spent my whole life feeling like the person nobody chose. And when Ethan told me he wanted a future with me, I believed him.""
I closed my eyes.
"Was he going to marry you?""
"That's what he promised.""
"And the wedding with me?""
"Patricia wanted your signature first. Ethan said once the money was released, he would end the engagement and come back to us.""
I felt a cold emptiness settle in my chest.
"So I was supposed to be the temporary wife.""
Madison didn't deny it.
"Why did you accept?""
"Because Patricia told me the trust belonged partly to my mother. She said you were keeping something that should have been ours.""
I looked at the beneficiary amendment.
"Did you know Grandma never signed it?""
"No.""
"Did you know the $350,000 was being transferred?""
"Not all of it.""
"Did you know Daniel was leaving the country tonight?""
Madison went silent.
"Madison?""
"Yes.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She immediately began writing something down.
"Where is he?""
"I don't know.""
"Don't lie to me.""
"I'm not. I was supposed to meet him at the airport, but I changed my mind.""
"Why?""
"Because he told me something about Oliver.""
My heart pounded.
"What?""
Madison's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Oliver's birth certificate isn't real.""
I froze.
"What do you mean?""
"Ethan isn't listed as his biological father.""
I stared at the phone.
"That's impossible. You just told me he was.""
"I thought he was. Patricia arranged the paperwork. But when I requested a copy from the hospital, the records didn't match.""
"Who is Oliver's father?""
Madison started crying again.
"I don't know.""
I looked toward my father.
He was watching me carefully.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Ask her about the DNA test.""
I repeated the question.
"Did you ever have a DNA test?""
Madison hesitated.
"Yes.""
"And?""
"It said Ethan wasn't the father.""
I felt dizzy.
"Then why did you tell everyone he was?""
"Because Patricia said the test had been tampered with.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head slightly, signaling me to keep going.
"Who ordered the test?""
"Daniel.""
"Why?""
"He wanted to prove something about the trust.""
I closed my eyes.
Nothing made sense anymore.
Then Madison said something that changed everything.
"Claire, I think Oliver's father is your father.""
The phone nearly slipped from my hand.
I stared at my dad.
"What?""
He shook his head immediately.
"No.""
Madison was crying so hard I could barely understand her.
"Patricia showed me the test results. She said Daniel had proof. She told me that's why your father had been transferring money to Rachel's account.""
My father stepped forward.
"Madison, listen to me. I have never met Rachel.""
"That's not what the documents say!""
Vanessa took the phone from my hand.
"Madison, this is Vanessa Cole. Do you have the original DNA report?""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
"In my apartment. But Patricia has a copy.""
"Do not give anyone that document. Do you understand?""
A loud noise came through the phone.
Then Madison gasped.
"Someone's here.""
"Who?"" I asked.
She whispered something.
I couldn't hear it.
Then the call disconnected.
I immediately called back.
No answer.
My father reached for his coat.
"We're going to find her.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Not without involving the police.""
I looked at the photograph of my grandmother and Madison.
The family secret was no longer just about stolen money.
It involved a child, a forged birth certificate, and a possible connection between my father and a woman he claimed never to have met.
I turned toward him.
"Dad, I need you to tell me the truth.""
He looked directly into my eyes.
"I am.""
"Have you ever met Rachel Bennett?""
"No.""
"Have you ever paid her?""
"No.""
"Have you ever seen Madison's DNA report?""
He hesitated.
Just for a fraction of a second.
But I saw it.
"Dad?""
He slowly sat down.
Then he reached into his jacket and pulled out an old photograph.
It showed him standing beside a young woman outside a hospital.
The woman was Rachel.
On the back, someone had written a date.
July 19, 1983.
The exact date written on my grandmother's photograph.
My father looked at me.
"I need to explain something before you hear it from anyone else.""
I couldn't breathe.
"What?""
He placed the photograph on the desk.
"Rachel was my first wife.""
The room went silent.
My father continued.
"And Madison isn't just your cousin.""
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
"She's your half-sister.""
I stared at him.
Somewhere outside, a car horn sounded.
My phone vibrated again.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
*Now you understand why your grandmother left the entire second account to you. Because your father was never supposed to know it existed.*
And beneath it was a photograph of a document.
The original DNA report.

The result was clearly visible.
