Chapter 5: The Child Nobody Mentioned

I couldn't take my eyes off the photograph.

Madison was wearing a pale blue coat. Ethan had one arm around her shoulders, and the other hand rested on a baby carrier.

They looked like a family.

Not two people having an affair.

Not a man comforting a friend.

A family.

"When was this taken?"" I asked.

"Three months before Ethan proposed to you," Vanessa replied.

I looked at Ethan.

"Is this real?""

He rubbed his face.

"Claire, I was going to tell you.""

I almost dropped the photograph.

"You were going to tell me you have a child with my best friend?""

"Please.""

"How old is he?""

Ethan glanced at Patricia.

She answered.

"He's fourteen months old.""

The chapel seemed to shrink around me.

Fourteen months.

Madison had held my hand while I picked out wedding invitations.

She had cried when I told her Ethan proposed.

She had stood beside me at my grandmother's funeral.

And all that time, she had a child with my fiancé.

I looked at Patricia.

"Did you know?""

She lifted her chin.

"Of course.""

"How long?""

"Since the pregnancy.""

I turned toward Ethan.

"And you let me believe she was just my friend?""

Ethan stepped closer.

"Madison and I were together before you and I became serious.""

"Before?""

"Things were complicated.""

"Apparently, you had a baby together.""

He lowered his voice.

"We weren't planning to have him.""

Vanessa interrupted.

"His name is Oliver. He's registered under Ethan's surname.""

I looked at the photograph again.

The baby had Ethan's dark hair.

There was no denying it.

"Where is he?""

Patricia answered too quickly.

"With a nanny.""

I stared at her.

"Does Madison live with him?""

"She has an apartment.""

"Paid for by whom?""

Patricia didn't respond.

I turned to Ethan.

"Was the $125,000 for her?""

He nodded reluctantly.

"Partly.""

"Partly?""

"She needed money for Oliver.""

I let out a breath.

"So you've been supporting your child while telling me you couldn't afford our wedding expenses.""

"Claire, I was trying to keep everything together.""

I shook my head.

"You weren't keeping anything together. You were keeping me blind.""

My father stepped beside me.

"Son, this is over.""

Ethan turned sharply.

"You don't get to decide that.""

"I do when you're threatening my daughter.""

Patricia intervened.

"Robert, please. You know how complicated the arrangement is. Ethan has responsibilities.""

"His responsibilities don't include stealing from Claire.""

"Nobody stole anything!""

I held up the forged transfer authorization.

"Then whose signature is this?""

Patricia looked at me.

"Your grandmother's estate was meant to support the family.""

"Madison isn't my family.""

"She is Oliver's mother.""

"And I'm not his father.""

The words came out before I could stop them.

Ethan flinched.

Vanessa closed her folder.

"Claire, there's a reason Oliver's existence was kept quiet.""

I turned toward her.

"What reason?""

"Your grandmother discovered the relationship before she died. She confronted Patricia and Ethan.""

Patricia's face tightened.

Vanessa continued.

"Your grandmother didn't approve of the affair. But more importantly, she discovered that Ethan was using Oliver's birth certificate to support a claim against the trust.""

I frowned.

"How?""

"Under the original trust agreement, a direct descendant could receive an additional distribution if certain conditions were met.""

I looked at the photograph.

"Oliver is my grandmother's great-grandson?""

"Biologically, yes. But the trust required a formal declaration and proof that the child was born into a legally recognized family relationship.""

I looked at Ethan.

"So you needed me to marry you.""

He nodded.

"Oliver would become part of the family structure.""

"That's not how inheritance works.""

"There's more," Vanessa said.

She removed another document.

"This is a declaration prepared by Blackwood and Pierce. It states that Claire would acknowledge Oliver as a dependent of the marriage.""

I read the first paragraph.

My stomach turned.

The document described Oliver as a child raised within the marital household.

It implied that I had agreed to take responsibility for him.

I had never even met him.

"Who wrote this?""

"Patricia," Vanessa replied.

I looked at the older woman.

"Why would you do this?""

She finally lost her composure.

"Because my grandson needed a future!""

"Your grandson has a future. He has a job, a family, and a child. What he doesn't have is my permission to use my inheritance.""

Patricia's eyes flashed.

"You think you can walk away from this? The bank will seize the properties. Ethan will lose everything.""

"That's not my responsibility.""

"It will become your responsibility when the debt collectors come looking for your assets.""

My father stepped forward.

"Not if the documents are fraudulent.""

Ethan suddenly looked at me with something close to desperation.

"Claire, I know I've made mistakes. But we can fix this.""

I stared at him.

"How?""

"Marry me. We sign the necessary paperwork. Then I'll transfer everything back into your name.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

He was still asking.

Even now.

"You're asking me to marry you so you can finish what you started.""

"I'm asking you to save what we had.""

I glanced at Madison's photograph.

"What did we have, Ethan?""

He opened his mouth.

I continued.

"Did you love me when you proposed? Did you love me when you slept with her? Did you love me when you put my signature on those documents?""

His silence was unbearable.

Then he said, "I did love you.""

I looked at him for a long moment.

"That's the saddest part.""

I turned toward the exit.

But Patricia grabbed my arm.

"You're not leaving.""

My father immediately removed her hand.

"Don't touch her.""

Patricia raised her voice.

"You don't understand! If she leaves before the marriage is registered, the bank will freeze the transaction!""

I stopped.

There it was.

The truth.

Not love.

Not family.

Not even Oliver.

The wedding was the final step in a financial arrangement.

I turned around.

"How much have you already taken?""

Patricia's face went pale.

Ethan answered.

"Three hundred and fifty thousand.""

My heart stopped.

"From my inheritance?""

He nodded.

"Where is it?""

He looked toward his mother.

Patricia whispered, "It's gone.""

Vanessa opened her folder again.

"Not all of it.""

She placed a bank statement on the table.

There were three transfers.

$125,000 to Madison.

$100,000 to Patricia.

And $125,000 to an offshore holding company.

I stared at the company name.

It was unfamiliar.

But Vanessa recognized it immediately.

"That's strange.""

"What?""

She turned the page toward my father.

"The company is registered under Robert Bennett's old business address.""

My father went completely still.

"That's impossible.""

I looked at him.

"Dad?""

He took the statement and read it again.

Then he whispered something that made my blood run cold.

"I haven't owned that building in ten years.""

Vanessa looked directly at him.

"Then someone is using your old company records to hide the money.""

May you like

And suddenly, this was no longer just about Ethan.

Someone had been preparing this fraud long before my engagement began.
