Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

For several seconds, I could hear nothing except the chapel's air conditioning.

Patricia had written the condition.

She had planned my wedding around a financial transaction.

And Ethan had agreed to it.

I looked at the woman who had spent three years calling me her future daughter-in-law.

"You planned to marry me off like a business deal?""

Patricia adjusted the cuff of her dress.

"Don't be dramatic.""

"Two hundred people are waiting outside because you needed a marriage certificate.""

"Your grandmother's trust was complicated.""

"Then hire a lawyer.""

"We did.""

"Not one who forged my signature.""

Her face tightened.

Ethan stepped forward.

"Claire, I can explain the whole thing.""

I turned to him.

"Start with the woman in that message.""

His eyes flickered.

"What woman?""

"The first woman who refused to sign.""

Patricia looked sharply at Ethan.

That was enough.

I moved toward him.

"Who was she?""

He shook his head.

"Someone from the past.""

"Someone you dated?""

"No.""

"Someone you married?""

He didn't answer.

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Patricia.

"Was Ethan married before?""

She closed her eyes briefly.

"That marriage was annulled.""

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

"How long ago?""

"Seven years.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because it was irrelevant.""

"Was she involved in the trust?""

Patricia looked toward my father.

He was already taking photographs of the documents with his phone.

"Robert, put that away," she ordered.

My father didn't look up.

"No.""

Ethan grabbed the transfer authorization from the chair.

"These documents are confidential.""

Dad stepped forward.

"Not when they contain a forged signature belonging to my daughter.""

Ethan crumpled the paper in his fist.

"You don't understand how much money is involved.""

"Then explain it.""

Ethan's expression changed.

For the first time that morning, the charming man I had fallen in love with disappeared completely.

"Your grandmother's trust owns the controlling interest in three commercial properties," he said.

"The development company borrowed against the expected revenue. The bank wants repayment tomorrow.""

"Why?""

"Because the project failed.""

"How much is the actual debt?""

He hesitated.

"Four hundred and eighty thousand.""

I nodded slowly.

"And you thought marrying me would make that debt disappear?""

Patricia answered.

"Marriage would establish you as part of the management structure. The bank required your formal participation before releasing the remaining funds.""

"Participation?""

Ethan looked at me.

"We were going to make you a director.""

I almost laughed.

"You wanted me to be a director of a company I knew nothing about?""

"You would've had shares.""

"Shares in a company that owes nearly half a million dollars?""

"It was temporary.""

I took a breath.

"Where did the money go?""

Neither answered.

My father spoke instead.

"That's the question we need answered.""

Patricia suddenly reached for the documents.

"Robert, you have no authority to interfere with this.""

He pulled them away.

"I have every reason to interfere. These papers involve my daughter's inheritance.""

"Your daughter is about to destroy her future over a misunderstanding.""

I looked at her.

"Then why did you need my marriage certificate before Friday?""

Patricia's lips pressed together.

Ethan stepped closer.

"Because the trust agreement contains a spousal consent clause.""

I stared at him.

"What clause?""

He lowered his voice.

"After marriage, your spouse becomes an authorized representative for certain financial decisions.""

I felt sick.

"You're saying that if I married you, you could access my trust?""

"Not exactly.""

"Yes or no, Ethan.""

He looked away.

That was his answer.

My father took my arm.

"Claire, we're leaving.""

But I wasn't ready.

Not yet.

I wanted to know how deep this went.

I looked at Ethan.

"Did you ever love me?""

For the first time, his face softened.

"Of course I did.""

"Then why Madison?""

He glanced toward the hallway.

Madison had disappeared.

"She was helping me.""

"With what?""

"Keeping things together.""

I stared at him.

"By wearing my ring?""

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"She understood the business situation.""

"And I didn't?""

"You were always asking questions.""

The words were quiet.

But they cut deeper than a scream.

I nodded.

"So you needed someone who wouldn't ask questions.""

Ethan said nothing.

My phone rang.

The unknown number.

I answered immediately.

"Who is this?""

A woman's voice came through.

"Claire? My name is Vanessa Cole.""

I glanced at my father.

"How did you get my number?""

"I got it from your grandmother's attorney. I've been trying to reach you for months.""

"Why?""

"Because I was married to Ethan Bennett.""

The chapel seemed to tilt around me.

I looked at Patricia.

She had gone white.

Vanessa continued.

"Your grandmother hired me to review the trust before she died. I discovered a series of unauthorized transfers. When I confronted Ethan, Patricia threatened to destroy my career.""

"Why didn't you report them?""

"I did. But the documents disappeared, and Ethan filed for an annulment before the case could move forward.""

I gripped the phone.

"What do you need from me?""

"Your signature was forged on the trust documents. I have proof.""

My eyes moved toward the transfer authorization in my father's hand.

"How?""

"Because I kept a copy of the original agreement.""

"Where are you?""

"Outside the chapel.""

I froze.

"What?""

"I've been sitting in the parking lot for forty minutes. I didn't know whether you'd actually go through with the wedding.""

I turned toward the glass entrance.

A woman in a dark coat stood outside, holding a leather folder.

She looked directly at me.

"Claire," she said through the phone, "there's something else you need to know.""

I swallowed.

"What?""

"Your grandmother didn't leave the trust to you alone.""

I stared at her.

"What do you mean?""

"She named another beneficiary.""

"Who?""

Vanessa glanced through the glass at Ethan.

Then she said the name.

"Madison.""

Behind me, Ethan stopped breathing.

May you like

And from the front row, Patricia whispered:

"That wasn't supposed to come out today.""
