Chapter 12: The Evidence Vanessa Tried to Destroy
By the time we reached the old laboratory, two police vehicles were parked outside.
Red and blue lights reflected against the broken windows.
A security officer stood beside the entrance, speaking into a radio.
I recognized the building immediately.
The faded sign above the door still carried the name of my mother's company.
*CARTER ADVANCED ROBOTICS.*
Dad pulled the car to a stop.
"Stay here.""
I opened the door.
"Maya!""
He hurried after me.
Eleanor was already speaking to one of the officers.
She turned when she saw us.
"Thank goodness you're here.""
"What happened?""
"Someone entered the building less than twenty minutes ago.""
"Vanessa?""
"We don't know yet.""
The officer approached.
"Are you Maya Carter?""
I nodded.
"We found your name on some documents inside. There's been a suspected attempt to remove company property.""
"Was the prototype there?""
He looked at Eleanor.
"We're still checking.""
I tried to look through the open doorway.
The old laboratory was dark except for the emergency lights.
Then I saw something on the floor.
A broken metal panel.
My mother's handwriting was visible on one corner.
I stepped closer.
"That's part of the original prototype.""
The officer stopped me.
"Please remain outside.""
I swallowed.
"Someone is trying to destroy evidence.""
"We understand. That's why we're securing the scene.""
A few minutes later, another officer emerged carrying a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was a small black device.
Arthur's voice came from Eleanor's phone.
"Is that the Aurora memory unit?""
Eleanor held the phone closer.
Arthur examined the image.
"Yes. That's it.""
I felt a rush of hope.
"Is the recording still there?""
Arthur studied the photograph.
"I can't tell from here.""
The officer placed the device on a nearby table.
"Who can identify this item?""
Arthur answered through the phone.
"I can.""
Eleanor arranged for him to come immediately.
Meanwhile, Dad gave the officers Vanessa's recent messages and the photograph of the settlement agreement.
One officer studied the forged declaration.
"Is this your signature, Mr. Carter?""
"No.""
"Are you certain?""
"Absolutely.""
"Then we'll need a formal statement.""
Dad nodded.
"I'll provide one.""
I looked at him.
For the first time, he wasn't trying to avoid the consequences.
He was finally willing to face them.
Arthur arrived forty minutes later.
He examined the device through the evidence bag.
His hands trembled.
"This is definitely the secondary memory unit.""
The officer asked whether it could be recovered.
Arthur nodded.
"Possibly. But it must be handled carefully.""
The device was transferred to the forensic team.
While we waited, Eleanor received a call.
She listened without speaking.
Then she looked at me.
"Vanessa has been located.""
My stomach tightened.
"Where?""
"At a private parking garage near the Sentinel Dynamics research facility.""
"Was she alone?""
Eleanor shook her head.
"No. Martin Reeves was with her.""
Dad closed his eyes.
"Of course.""
The officer approached Eleanor.
"Mrs. Carter is being questioned about the attempted removal of company property.""
I looked toward the laboratory.
"Did she have the key?""
"Yes.""
I swallowed.
"Did she say what she was doing there?""
The officer glanced at his notes.
"She claimed she was retrieving personal belongings.""
I almost laughed.
"Personal belongings?""
Arthur looked toward the evidence bag.
"She knew exactly what she was looking for.""
The forensic technician called us the following morning.
The memory unit was damaged, but its data could be recovered.
Arthur insisted on being present.
We gathered in a secure room at the laboratory.
The technician connected the device to a specialized recovery system.
A progress bar appeared.
*DATA RECOVERY: 18%*
I sat beside Dad.
He reached for my hand.
This time, I didn't pull away.
The progress bar climbed.
*47%.*
*72%.*
*91%.*
Then the screen changed.
*RECOVERY COMPLETE.*
Arthur leaned forward.
"Open the audio archive.""
The technician selected a file.
Its date was March 14, several years earlier.
The recording began with the sound of a door opening.
Then my mother's voice.
"Vanessa, I know about the transfers.""
A second voice answered.
"Elizabeth, you're making a mistake.""
"I have the bank statements.""
"Those payments were authorized.""
"Not by me.""
A chair scraped against the floor.
Then Vanessa spoke.
"You don't understand what this technology is worth.""
My mother's voice remained calm.
"I understand exactly what it's worth. That's why I'm protecting it.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You're protecting it from people who could make it successful.""
"I'm protecting it from people who would use it to hurt others.""
There was a pause.
Then another voice entered.
Martin Reeves.
"Perhaps we should all calm down.""
Arthur closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
Vanessa said, "Martin, tell her what Sentinel offered.""
Martin answered, "They've offered eight hundred thousand dollars for the complete framework.""
Dad leaned forward.
Eight hundred thousand.
My mother replied, "And what exactly do they intend to do with it?""
Vanessa answered immediately.
"Predictive surveillance. Behavioral monitoring. Security systems. The possibilities are endless.""
"I won't allow it.""
"You're being emotional.""
"I'm being responsible.""
Then I heard my father's voice.
"Vanessa, we need to leave.""
My stomach tightened.
He sounded younger.
Angrier.
Vanessa responded.
"Daniel, stay out of this.""
"She's right. You have no authority to sell the framework.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Neither do you.""
A loud thud followed.
Then my mother spoke again.
"If you try to take the original files, I'll report everything.""
Vanessa's voice became cold.
"Then perhaps you should think about what happens to Maya if this becomes public.""
The room went silent.
I felt Dad's hand tighten around mine.
My mother's voice changed.
"Don't you dare threaten my daughter.""
"I am simply reminding you that Daniel has a family to protect.""
Dad stood abruptly.
"I never heard that.""
Arthur looked at him.
"Keep listening.""
The recording continued.
Martin spoke.
"Elizabeth, the financial records can still be corrected. We can settle this privately.""
My mother answered.
"No. The money must be returned.""
Then came the words that made my entire body go cold.
Vanessa said:
"By the time anyone discovers what I've done, the company will belong to me.""
There was a pause.
Then another voice spoke.
A voice none of us expected.
"Not if the original shareholder register says otherwise.""
I looked at Arthur.
He had gone pale.
The voice belonged to someone who hadn't spoken earlier.
Someone standing in the room.
Someone who knew exactly what Vanessa had been planning.
The technician paused the recording.
"Do you recognize that person?""
Arthur nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
"Who is it?""
He looked at me.
"Your mother's attorney.""
I frowned.
"Why would her attorney be there?""
Arthur removed his glasses.
"Because Elizabeth suspected Vanessa would try to take control of the company. She asked her attorney to prepare a document proving the original ownership structure.""
Eleanor leaned forward.
"Do you know where that document is?""
Arthur shook his head.
"No. But the attorney might.""
"What's his name?""
Arthur looked at the recording details.
"Richard Coleman.""
Eleanor immediately began searching.
I turned toward the screen.
There was still another part of the recording.
The technician resumed playback.
Richard's voice became clearer.
"Elizabeth, the trust documents are complete. Maya is protected. Vanessa cannot transfer the framework without your daughter's consent.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Then I'll make sure she never knows it exists.""
My mother's voice followed.
"She will know. When she's old enough, she'll decide what happens next.""
Then the recording ended.
I sat motionless.
For the first time, I understood why Vanessa had worked so hard to hide the original company records.
She hadn't simply wanted to steal my invention.
She wanted to erase the evidence that my mother had legally protected it for me.
Eleanor looked at Arthur.
"We need to locate Richard Coleman immediately.""
Arthur nodded.
"He retired several years ago.""
"Do you know where he lives?""
Arthur hesitated.
"Yes.""
We reached Richard Coleman's home just after noon.
It was a modest house on a quiet street, with a small garden and a blue front door.
Eleanor knocked.
An elderly man opened it.
"Can I help you?""
Arthur stepped forward.
"Richard. It's been a long time.""
The man stared at him.
Then his expression changed.
"Arthur Bennett.""
They shook hands.
Richard invited us inside.
When Eleanor explained the situation, he listened without interrupting.
Then he walked to a filing cabinet and removed a thick envelope.
"I wondered when someone would come looking for this.""
I stared at the envelope.
It had my name written across the front.
*MAYA ELIZABETH CARTER.*
Richard placed it on the table.
"Your mother gave me this shortly before she died. She instructed me to release it only when you were old enough and the ownership of the Aurora Framework was challenged.""
I touched the envelope.
"What's inside?""
"Your original trust deed, the shareholder register, and a notarized declaration confirming that your mother never transferred ownership of the framework.""
Eleanor exhaled.
"That's exactly what we need.""
Richard looked at me.
"There's also something else.""
He removed a second envelope.
"This one was delivered to my office last week.""
I opened it.
Inside was a letter from Vanessa.
She had offered Richard a substantial payment in exchange for the original documents.
The amount was $150,000.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
You know what happened to Elizabeth. Don't make the same mistake.
My hands began to shake.
Dad stood up.
"She's threatening him.""
Richard nodded.
"She called twice. I refused to cooperate.""
I looked at the letter.
"Did you report this?""
"I intended to. But I wanted to make sure you had the original documents first.""
Eleanor carefully collected the envelopes.
"This is extremely important evidence.""
Richard nodded.
"Then there's one more thing you should know.""
He looked directly at me.
"Vanessa wasn't the only person who wanted your mother's company.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Who else?""
Richard opened a drawer.
He removed a printed letter bearing the logo of Sentinel Dynamics.
"The company offered to purchase the Aurora Framework directly from Elizabeth before she died.""
I looked at the date.
It was three weeks before my mother's final hospitalization.
Richard continued.
"Your mother rejected the offer. But the person who negotiated it on Sentinel's behalf was not Vanessa.""
He turned the letter toward me.
The signature at the bottom belonged to the company's current chief executive.
*JONATHAN PRICE.*
I looked at Eleanor.
"Is he coming to court?""
She nodded.
"He has already confirmed his attendance.""
Richard leaned back.
"Then be careful, Maya. Vanessa may have been the person who stole the technology, but she wasn't necessarily the person who wanted it most.""
I looked at the letter.
Eight hundred thousand dollars.
A company willing to pay that much for my mother's work.
A stepmother willing to lie, steal, and threaten people to obtain it.
And a father who had finally begun telling the truth.
Tomorrow, we would face all of them in court.
But as Eleanor gathered the documents, my phone vibrated.
An email had arrived from an unknown address.
It contained only one sentence.
Your mother knew Sentinel would come after you. Ask your father what happened on the night she died.
I looked up.
Dad was standing beside the window.
May you like
He had read the message over my shoulder.
And the expression on his face told me that there was still one secret he hadn't confessed.
