Chapter 14: The Million-Dollar Lie
The courtroom was silent when Jonathan Price took the witness stand.
He adjusted his tie and looked toward the judge.
His attorney sat beside him, arranging a stack of documents.
Eleanor stood.
"Mr. Price, are you familiar with Carter Advanced Robotics?""
"Yes.""
"Did Sentinel Dynamics attempt to purchase the Aurora Framework?""
"We explored a potential commercial partnership.""
"Was the proposed purchase price eight hundred thousand dollars?""
Jonathan paused.
"I don't recall the exact figure.""
Eleanor placed the original proposal on the screen.
"Would this document refresh your memory?""
He examined it.
"Yes. That appears to be one of our preliminary offers.""
"And who negotiated that offer?""
"Martin Reeves.""
"Did you know Mr. Reeves was working with Vanessa Carter?""
Jonathan shifted in his chair.
"I understood he was acting as a consultant.""
"Did you know he had previously worked for Carter Advanced Robotics?""
"Not at the time.""
Eleanor displayed the original company records.
"Then how do you explain this email?""
It was a message from Jonathan to Martin.
We need the original Aurora architecture, not the school demonstration. Once the source files are secured, we can proceed without Elizabeth's approval.
Jonathan's attorney stood.
"Objection. The context of the email is unclear.""
Eleanor nodded.
"Then let's establish the context.""
She displayed the next message.
Vanessa assures us the ownership dispute will be resolved. Daniel has already signed the necessary paperwork.
I looked at Dad.
His face was rigid.
Jonathan leaned toward his attorney.
Eleanor continued.
"Mr. Price, did you know that Daniel Carter's signature was obtained under the belief that he was signing a temporary licensing agreement?""
"I can't comment on another person's understanding.""
"Did you know that the original trust deed prohibited the sale of the Aurora Framework without Maya Carter's consent?""
Jonathan remained silent.
"Mr. Price?""
He looked at the judge.
"I wasn't involved in the legal documentation.""
Eleanor placed another file on the screen.
"This is a payment record from Sentinel Dynamics to Meridian Holdings. Eighty thousand dollars. The account belonged to Martin Reeves. Can you explain it?""
Jonathan's expression hardened.
"It was a consulting payment.""
"For what service?""
"Technical research.""
"What research?""
He didn't answer.
Eleanor waited.
Then she asked:
"Was the money intended to secure the original Aurora prototype?""
Jonathan looked toward Vanessa.
For a brief moment, their eyes met.
That was enough.
The judge noticed.
"Mr. Price, answer the question.""
Jonathan cleared his throat.
"We were interested in obtaining the prototype.""
"Even though its ownership was disputed?""
"We believed the matter would be resolved.""
"By whom?""
Jonathan's jaw tightened.
"By Vanessa Carter.""
Eleanor stepped back.
"Thank you. No further questions.""
Vanessa's attorney requested a recess.
During the break, Brielle approached me.
"I didn't know Jonathan was involved.""
I looked at her.
"Neither did I.""
She glanced toward the corridor.
"Mom is going to blame me for everything.""
I didn't answer.
Brielle swallowed.
"I deserve some of it.""
"Yes," I said quietly.
"You do.""
She nodded.
"But I don't want to keep lying.""
I looked at her.
"Then don't.""
She wiped her eyes.
"I want to tell the judge something else.""
Before I could ask what, Eleanor called us back inside.
The judge permitted Brielle to provide additional testimony.
She took the stand again.
This time, she carried a small notebook.
"Your Honor, I found this in my mother's office.""
Vanessa immediately stood.
"That document is private company property.""
The judge looked at her.
"Sit down, Mrs. Carter.""
Brielle opened the notebook.
"It contains instructions my mother gave me before the competition.""
She read the first entry.
Use the silver-blue prototype. Keep the original casing. The crack near the shoulder must remain visible so the machine appears authentic.
My stomach tightened.
That was the crack from the night I dropped A.R.I.A.
Brielle continued.
Do not alter the voice system. The robot must identify the original creator if prompted.
The judge looked up.
"Why would your mother write that?""
Brielle's voice shook.
"Because she knew the robot would recognize Maya.""
She turned the page.
Another entry.
If the demonstration fails, remove the memory card and deny knowledge of its contents.
The courtroom became completely silent.
Brielle closed the notebook.
"She planned everything.""
Vanessa stared at her daughter.
"You ungrateful child.""
The judge struck the desk.
"Mrs. Carter, that is enough.""
Brielle began crying.
But she continued.
"Mom told me Maya was going to inherit the company. She said if I helped her win the competition, we'd both become rich.""
She looked at me.
"I was selfish. I wanted the attention. I wanted everyone to think I was talented.""
Her voice cracked.
"But I didn't build that robot. Maya did.""
I felt tears gather in my eyes.
The judge thanked her and dismissed her from the stand.
As Brielle returned to her seat, I reached for her hand.
She looked surprised.
I didn't smile.
I wasn't ready to forgive everything.
But I wasn't going to let her stand alone after finally telling the truth.
Eleanor called Arthur Bennett next.
He explained the history of the Aurora Framework, the original development records, and the independent trust.
Then she played the recovered laboratory recording.
The courtroom speakers carried my mother's voice.
Vanessa's voice.
Martin's voice.
Dad's voice.
And Jonathan Price's voice.
The recording confirmed that the proposed sale had been discussed before my mother's death.
It also established that my mother had explicitly refused to authorize the transfer.
When the recording ended, the judge looked toward Vanessa.
"Mrs. Carter, do you wish to respond?""
Vanessa stood.
"Yes, Your Honor.""
She walked to the witness stand.
Her attorney looked alarmed.
"Mrs. Carter, you are not required to testify," he whispered.
"I know.""
She faced the judge.
"Everything I've done was to protect the company. Elizabeth was making terrible decisions. She wanted to give away years of work to a child who barely understood technology.""
I felt my hands tighten.
Vanessa continued.
"I kept the business alive. I found investors. I made sure the technology had a future.""
Eleanor stood.
"Then why did you hide the original ownership records?""
"Because they were outdated.""
"Why did you remove the prototype from the school archive?""
"Because it belonged to the company.""
"Why did you instruct Brielle to present Maya's invention as her own?""
Vanessa looked toward her daughter.
"She was helping the family.""
Brielle began crying again.
Eleanor's final question was quiet.
"Why did you offer Richard Coleman $150,000 to surrender documents that you claim are outdated and irrelevant?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
The judge leaned forward.
"Mrs. Carter, you need to understand that this court is not deciding whether you believe you acted in the company's best interests. It is deciding whether you had the legal authority to do what you did.""
Vanessa looked down.
Then Jonathan Price made a mistake.
He stood and spoke without being called.
"Your Honor, Sentinel Dynamics was prepared to purchase the technology in good faith.""
The judge turned toward him.
"Sit down, Mr. Price.""
Jonathan hesitated.
"The company has invested significant resources—"
"Sit down.""
He did.
But Eleanor had already noticed something.
She requested permission to introduce one final exhibit.
It was an email chain recovered from the company's server.
The first message came from Jonathan.
We need the Aurora Framework regardless of the original owner's consent.
The second came from Vanessa.
I can secure the rights through Daniel's signature and Brielle's public demonstration.
The third came from Martin.
The school presentation is arranged. The original records will be removed before the hearing.
Then came Jonathan's final reply.
Once the acquisition is complete, destroy the remaining development archive. There must be no evidence of Elizabeth's original ownership.
The judge read the message twice.
Then he looked toward Jonathan.
"Mr. Price, did you authorize this instruction?""
Jonathan's attorney immediately requested a recess.
But the judge refused.
"I have heard enough to issue a temporary ruling.""
He reviewed the documents.
The original trust deed.
The shareholder register.
The financial records.
The recording.
The messages.
And the testimony.
Then he spoke.
"Based on the evidence presented, the court finds substantial grounds to question Vantage Intelligent Systems' ownership claim. The company is prohibited from transferring, licensing, modifying, or selling the disputed Aurora technology pending further proceedings.""
I released a breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding.
The judge continued.
"The court also recognizes Maya Carter as the beneficiary of the original intellectual property trust, subject to final verification of the remaining registration requirements.""
Eleanor squeezed my shoulder.
Dad covered his face.
Brielle started crying.
Vanessa remained completely still.
Then the judge added:
"The allegations concerning fraudulent documents, unauthorized financial transfers, and attempted destruction of evidence will be referred to the appropriate authorities.""
A court officer approached Vanessa.
"Mrs. Carter, we need you to accompany us.""
She looked toward me.
For a moment, I thought she might apologize.
Instead, she leaned closer.
"You think you've won?""
I didn't answer.
She lowered her voice.
"You still don't know what your mother hid inside A.R.I.A.""
My blood ran cold.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa smiled bitterly.
"Ask Arthur why the robot has two memory systems.""
Then the officer escorted her away.
Outside the courthouse, reporters gathered around us.
Cameras flashed.
Questions came from every direction.
"Is it true you built the robot?""
"Will you sue Vantage?""
"Are you going to continue your mother's company?""
I couldn't answer all of them.
I only wanted to go home.
But before we left, Arthur approached me.
His expression was serious.
"Vanessa said something about the second memory system?""
I nodded.
He looked toward A.R.I.A., which Dad had brought in the car.
"There's something I need to show you.""
He opened the maintenance panel.
Inside was a small compartment hidden beneath the main processor.
Arthur removed a protective cover.
A tiny silver chip was attached to the board.
"Your mother installed this before she died.""
I stared at it.
"What does it contain?""
Arthur looked at me.
"The original Aurora Framework isn't the only thing your mother left behind.""
He connected the chip to a diagnostic reader.
A file appeared.
*ELIZABETH_CARTER_FINAL_MESSAGE.mp4*
My heart stopped.
Arthur pressed play.
My mother's face appeared.
But this time, she wasn't sitting in the garage.
She was standing beside the original prototype.
And she looked directly into the camera.
"Maya, if you're watching this, it means Vanessa has finally revealed what she was really after.""
She paused.
"There is something I need you to understand about A.R.I.A.""
Her expression softened.
"The robot you built isn't simply based on my work.""
May you like
She smiled.
"It's the missing piece.""
