Chapter 2: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear

My father's voice came through the speakers again.

"Vanessa, what have you done?""

I stopped breathing.

Dad wasn't supposed to be part of this.

He had been working in Chicago all week. At least, that's what Vanessa had told me.

Onstage, Brielle looked ready to faint.

"Turn it off!"" she shouted.

Dr. Harrison stepped between her and the robot.

"Nobody touches that machine.""

Vanessa pushed past a school administrator.

"This is ridiculous. It's a private family conversation being broadcast without permission.""

Dr. Harrison looked at her.

"Then perhaps you can explain why the conversation concerns a student's stolen competition entry.""

Vanessa's lips parted.

Nothing came out.

I moved closer to A.R.I.A.

"Continue the recording.""

Vanessa spun toward me.

"Maya, you have no idea what you're doing.""

I looked directly into her eyes.

"Then explain it.""

For a moment, she seemed to consider whether she could still control the room.

Then she straightened her dress and addressed the judges.

"My husband and I have invested considerable time and money into supporting both girls. Maya has been struggling emotionally since her mother's death, and sometimes she becomes possessive of things she creates.""

A few parents exchanged uncomfortable glances.

I felt the old familiar pressure in my chest.

There it was again.

The same trick.

Turn my reaction into the problem. Make my anger seem unreasonable. Make everyone forget what caused it.

But this time, I wasn't alone.

A.R.I.A. spoke.

"Warning. Audio file contains additional evidence.""

Dr. Harrison leaned forward.

"Play it.""

The recording crackled.

Then Brielle's voice returned.

"Mom, are you sure the judges won't check the original files?""

Vanessa replied, "They'll see your presentation, your name, and your registration. That's what matters.""

"But what if they ask how I built it?""

"Memorize the technical explanation I gave you.""

"I don't understand half of it.""

"Then smile and speak slowly. People believe confident people.""

A few people laughed nervously.

Brielle's face turned scarlet.

Vanessa reached for the controller on the table.

I stepped in front of her.

"Don't.""

She stopped.

For the first time, she looked at me as though I were someone she couldn't simply dismiss.

Dr. Harrison turned toward Brielle.

"Miss Carter, did you build this robot?""

Brielle looked at her mother.

Then at me.

"I... helped with the project.""

"That wasn't my question.""

"I contributed ideas.""

"Did you write the software?""

Brielle shook her head.

"Some of it.""

I couldn't help laughing.

It wasn't funny.

It was the absurdity of watching someone who had spent months pretending my work belonged to her suddenly struggle to name even one programming language.

I spoke into the microphone.

"She didn't write any of it. The entire operating system was developed on my laptop. Every circuit diagram, every movement algorithm, every voice-recognition protocol has my digital signature.""

Vanessa scoffed.

"Digital signatures can be manipulated.""

"Then check the original development files.""

Dr. Harrison nodded toward a technician.

"Can you access them?""

"Yes, sir.""

The technician connected his laptop to A.R.I.A.''s maintenance port.

A progress bar appeared on the large screen.

*CREATOR PROFILE: MAYA CARTER*

*ORIGINAL BUILD DATE: FEBRUARY 12*

*LAST SOFTWARE MODIFICATION: YESTERDAY, 11:47 P.M.*

*REGISTERED DEVELOPMENT DEVICE: MC-LAPTOP-07*

The screen displayed a timeline of nine months of work.

Hundreds of entries.

Thousands of lines of code.

Every modification timestamped.

Brielle stared at the screen.

"That's not fair.""

Dr. Harrison looked at her.

"What isn't fair?""

She pointed at me.

"She had more time! She's been working on this for months!""

I blinked.

"Because I built it.""

"Mom said we could use it!""

The words escaped before Brielle could stop them.

The room went completely quiet.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Dr. Harrison slowly turned toward her.

"Mrs. Carter, did you give your daughter permission to use Maya's project?""

Vanessa recovered quickly.

"I thought Maya had agreed to share the technology.""

"No," I said.

Vanessa shot me a warning look.

"Be careful, Maya.""

I almost smiled.

That was the sentence she'd used whenever she wanted me frightened enough to surrender.

But I had spent nine months building something that could recognize the truth.

I wasn't going to let her frighten me now.

The judges suspended Brielle's presentation.

A school administrator escorted Vanessa away from the stage, but she kept insisting that everything was a misunderstanding.

Brielle sat in the front row, crying into a tissue.

I stood beside A.R.I.A., afraid to touch it.

A small mechanical hand reached toward mine.

"Hello, Maya.""

My throat tightened.

"Hi, sweetheart.""

The robot tilted its head.

"Emotional distress detected.""

I laughed through my tears.

"Yeah. You could say that.""

Dr. Harrison approached.

"Miss Carter, I owe you an apology. We should have verified the registration before allowing this presentation.""

"It's okay.""

"No, it isn't. You worked for this.""

He examined the robot.

"Your design is impressive. But I have another question. What did you mean by security playback?""

I glanced at the memory card indicator.

"I installed a secondary recording system last night.""

"Why?""

I hesitated.

"Because someone accessed my laptop without permission.""

The judge's expression became serious.

"Who?""

I looked toward Vanessa.

She was speaking to a school official, her hands moving rapidly as she explained something.

"I don't know for certain.""

It was a lie.

I knew exactly who had entered my room three nights earlier.

I'd seen the door slightly open when I came upstairs.

I'd found my laptop awake, even though I'd shut it down.

And I'd discovered a strange USB device plugged into the maintenance port.

I hadn't confronted anyone.

I'd simply installed an encrypted backup system and activated the robot's security microphone.

I never imagined I'd need it.

Dr. Harrison lowered his voice.

"Would you be willing to submit the complete recording to the school?""

"Yes.""

"Good. We may need to involve the authorities if the evidence confirms what we're hearing.""

Before I could answer, someone called my name.

"Maya!""

I turned.

My father was standing at the auditorium entrance.

He was still wearing his charcoal business suit. His hair was disheveled, and he looked as though he'd driven straight from the airport.

I ran toward him.

"Dad?""

He caught me in his arms.

"What happened, sweetheart?""

I pulled away.

"Where have you been?""

His eyes shifted toward the stage.

"I came as soon as I heard.""

"Who called you?""

He hesitated.

"Your school.""

I looked at him.

"Did you know Brielle was presenting my robot?""

His jaw tightened.

"No.""

"Did you know Vanessa took it from the garage?""

He didn't answer immediately.

That silence hurt more than I expected.

I stepped back.

"Dad?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Maya, there's something I need to explain.""

Before he could continue, Vanessa appeared behind him.

"Daniel, don't.""

My father turned.

"Not now, Vanessa.""

"You promised me.""

He looked exhausted.

"I promised you I'd protect this family.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Then protect it.""

I stared between them.

"What does that mean?""

Dad looked at me.

His eyes were filled with something I'd never seen before.

Shame.

Then he reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document.

"Maya, I found something in the house this morning. Something your stepmother has been hiding.""

He handed it to me.

It was a bank statement.

My eyes moved down the page.

A series of monthly transfers appeared.

The account holder's name was Vanessa Carter.

The recipient was a technology company I'd never heard of.

And the total amount transferred over nine months was...

$47,500.

I looked up.

"What's this?""

Dad swallowed.

"Money from your mother's trust.""

My fingers went numb.

"Why was she taking money from Mom's trust?""

Vanessa took a step forward.

"Daniel, give me that.""

He moved the document out of her reach.

"Tell her the truth.""

Vanessa stared at me.

May you like

Then she said something that made my stomach drop.

"Your mother never intended for you to have that money.""
