Chapter 3: The Money My Mother Left Behind

I read the bank statement three times.

Forty-seven thousand five hundred dollars.

Every transfer had been made from the account my mother had established for my education and future.

I remembered the day she'd explained it to me.

I was eleven, sitting on the kitchen counter while she packed her work bag.

"One day, you'll have choices, Maya," she'd said.

"I want you to be able to choose your own life.""

I'd thought she meant college.

Maybe a house.

Maybe something ordinary.

I hadn't imagined that one day someone would take the money before I was old enough to use it.

I looked at my father.

"How long have you known?""

Daniel rubbed his face.

"I found the statements this morning.""

"Then why did you say Mom never intended for me to have it?""

"I didn't say that.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

"She did.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"You're twisting my words.""

"Then explain the money.""

She glanced at the people still watching us.

"Not here.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You were happy to stand here while Brielle pretended to build my robot. But now you don't want an audience?""

"Maya," Dad warned gently.

"No, Dad. I want answers.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Your mother left behind a complicated financial arrangement. I helped your father manage the household expenses. Some of those funds were used for family investments.""

"Forty-seven thousand dollars?""

"Investments require capital.""

"Why didn't you ask me?""

She rolled her eyes.

"Because you were a child.""

I held up the statement.

"I'm still the beneficiary.""

Vanessa's expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Dad did too.

He reached for the document.

"That's enough. We're going home.""

The drive home was silent.

Brielle sat in the back seat with her arms crossed. Vanessa occupied the passenger seat, staring out the window. I sat beside my father, holding the bank statement.

The rain began just before we reached our neighborhood.

When Dad pulled into the driveway, Vanessa immediately got out.

"I'm not discussing this while everyone's upset," she announced.

I followed her inside.

"Where's the rest of the money?""

She turned around.

"Excuse me?""

"The trust. How much is left?""

"That's none of your business.""

Dad placed his keys on the counter.

"It is her business, Vanessa.""

She looked at him with disbelief.

"You're seriously going to take her side?""

"I'm taking the side of the truth.""

Brielle entered the kitchen behind us.

"Can we please stop?""

I turned toward her.

"You knew about the money?""

She looked down.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

"Your mother transferred almost fifty thousand dollars from my mother's trust.""

Brielle's face tightened.

"Mom said it was family money.""

I stared at her.

"Family money?""

"She said your mom left enough for everyone.""

"She left it for me.""

Brielle threw her hands up.

"Well, maybe if you weren't so obsessed with your stupid robot, you'd know what was happening in this house!""

The words struck harder than they should have.

I looked at her.

"Do you even understand what that money was supposed to pay for?""

She didn't answer.

"Mom wanted me to have an education. She worked for years to save it.""

Vanessa stepped between us.

"Don't manipulate your sister with emotional stories.""

I stared at her.

"Emotional stories?""

"Your mother is gone, Maya. You cannot keep using her memory to get your way.""

For a moment, the kitchen became unbearably quiet.

Dad's hand tightened around the edge of the counter.

"Vanessa. Apologize.""

She looked at him.

"What?""

"Apologize to my daughter.""

Vanessa laughed without humor.

"You're letting a teenage girl turn you against your wife.""

"She's my daughter.""

"And I'm your wife!""

Brielle moved toward the stairs.

"Mom, just leave it.""

Vanessa pointed toward me.

"She has been doing this since the beginning. Every time something goes wrong, she blames me.""

I took a breath.

"Because you keep doing things wrong.""

Her hand lifted.

Dad stepped between us before she could reach me.

"Don't.""

Vanessa froze.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Dad said quietly, "I want you to give me the financial records.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"You're making a mistake.""

"Maybe. But I'm done guessing.""

That night, I couldn't sleep.

I sat in the garage with A.R.I.A. on the worktable.

The robot's shoulder had a tiny crack from the night I'd dropped it months earlier.

I'd tried to repair it twice.

But I'd never wanted to replace the original piece.

It reminded me that building something meaningful didn't mean making it perfect.

My laptop chimed.

An email had arrived from the competition committee.

*Subject: Westbridge Innovation Competition — Formal Review*

I opened it.

The judges had confirmed that my project was registered under my name. Brielle's presentation had been suspended pending investigation.

They also requested the original development files and the security recording.

I sent everything.

Then I opened the folder containing A.R.I.A.''s backup recordings.

There were several files from the previous evening.

One was labeled:

*SECURITY EVENT — 11:42 P.M.*

I clicked it.

The screen showed the garage from the robot's perspective.

At first, nothing happened.

Then the door opened.

Vanessa entered.

She looked directly at the robot.

"Let's see what you've got in here.""

She approached the worktable and connected a small device to A.R.I.A.''s maintenance port.

I leaned closer.

The recording continued.

Vanessa opened a file on her phone.

It contained a list of software components and a payment receipt.

Then she spoke.

"Once Brielle wins, they'll have no choice but to recognize the company. Daniel will finally understand that I was right.""

I paused the recording.

The company?

I rewound it.

Vanessa's phone screen had been visible for a few seconds.

I zoomed in.

A logo appeared.

*VANTAGE INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS.*

I searched the name in my laptop.

A website appeared.

The company described itself as an emerging artificial intelligence developer specializing in domestic robotics.

Its featured product was a silver-and-blue home-assistance robot.

My stomach tightened.

The promotional photograph looked exactly like A.R.I.A.

Except the robot in the photograph had a different name.

*AVA — Advanced Virtual Assistant.*

I scrolled down.

There was a section titled Our Development Team.

Brielle Carter appeared first.

Beneath her photograph was Vanessa's name.

And beside Vanessa's name was the title:

*Chief Executive Officer.*

I sat back.

My stepmother hadn't simply wanted Brielle to win a school competition.

She had been planning to use my invention to launch a company.

I kept scrolling.

Then I found something worse.

A press release dated two weeks earlier announced that Vantage Intelligent Systems had secured a private investment agreement worth $250,000.

The company claimed that its patented robotic technology had been independently developed.

I opened the attached technical brochure.

Page after page showed diagrams of my robot.

My circuit layout.

My movement system.

Even the tiny mechanical joint I'd designed to prevent A.R.I.A.''s arms from overheating.

They had copied everything.

But the final page made my hands shake.

It contained a signed declaration stating that Brielle Carter was the sole inventor and intellectual property owner.

And below it was a second signature.

My father's.

I stared at his name.

Daniel Carter.

The man who had crouched beside me on the garage floor and told me to make my mother proud.

The man who had just stood beside me in the auditorium.

The man who had supposedly known nothing about Vanessa's plan.

I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned.

Dad stood in the garage doorway.

He looked at my laptop.

Then at the document on the screen.

His face went pale.

"Maya...""

I slowly stood up.

"Tell me you didn't sign this.""

He closed his eyes.

And when he finally answered, his words shattered the last piece of trust I had left.

"I didn't know they were stealing your robot. I thought I was signing something that would protect your future.""

I pointed at the screen.

"Then why does it say Brielle owns my invention?""

Dad looked down.

"I was told it was only a temporary licensing agreement.""

"By Vanessa?""

He nodded.

I stared at him.

"Did you read it?""

He didn't answer.

"Did you even read what you signed?""

His silence told me everything.

I turned back to the laptop.

The document included a clause transferring all rights to the technology to Vantage Intelligent Systems.

And the signature date was nine months earlier.

The exact month I'd started building A.R.I.A.

I scrolled to the final paragraph.

My mother's trust had been listed as the source of the company's initial development funding.

I looked at Dad.

"She didn't just steal my robot, did she?""

His eyes filled with tears.

Before he could answer, my laptop chimed again.

A new email had arrived.

It was from a lawyer representing Vantage Intelligent Systems.

*Subject: NOTICE OF OWNERSHIP DISPUTE — CEASE AND DESIST*

I opened it.

The first sentence read:

You are hereby instructed to immediately stop claiming ownership of the artificial intelligence technology known as A.R.I.A., which legally belongs to Vantage Intelligent Systems.

I looked at the attached legal document.

Then I noticed the date of the hearing scheduled at the bottom.

Three days away.

And one final line caught my attention.

Failure to comply may result in legal action against Maya Carter and her legal guardian, Daniel Carter.

I looked at my father.

May you like

For the first time, I wondered whether Vanessa had stolen my future alone.

Or whether my own father had helped her sign it away.
