Chapter 13: The Son Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

Marcus didn't move.

For several seconds, he simply stared at Daniel as if he hadn't understood the words.

Then he laughed.

It was a short, hollow sound.

"That's not funny.""

Daniel looked at him.

"I'm not joking.""

Marcus shook his head.

"My father raised me. I have his name. I have his birth certificate. I've spent my entire life being told I'm Edward Whitmore's son.""

"Edward raised you because he loved you.""

"Then what are you talking about?""

Daniel looked toward Rebecca.

She had lowered her head.

I stepped between them.

"I don't care whose biological child Marcus is. I want to know where my son is.""

Daniel nodded.

"He's at the old residence near Lake Mercer. Vanessa took him there because she believes the original inheritance agreement is hidden inside Evelyn's personal archive.""

"Why didn't you tell the police?""

"Because the agreement contains information that could expose everyone involved in the hospital incident.""

My father grabbed Daniel by the collar.

"Enough! You've been hiding behind secrets for twelve years. My granddaughter is missing, and you still think you can control the conversation?""

Daniel didn't resist.

"I know.""

"Then take us to Leo.""

Daniel looked at me.

"There's something you need to understand first. The baby Rebecca gave birth to was not the only child involved in that arrangement.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Tell me the truth.""

Daniel finally opened his briefcase.

Inside was a yellowed birth record, a photograph, and a sealed envelope.

He placed the birth record on the hood of the police vehicle.

It listed two male children born at St. Mary's Hospital within ninety minutes of each other.

One was registered as Leo Hayes.

The other was registered as Christopher Whitmore.

But beneath the second entry was a handwritten correction.

*Mother: Vanessa Whitmore.*

I stared at it.

"What?""

Daniel nodded.

"Vanessa had a child before Marcus was born. A boy who died shortly after delivery.""

Marcus looked horrified.

"My mother never told me.""

"Because she couldn't accept what happened.""

Daniel continued.

"Edward had discovered that Vanessa's pregnancy had ended in a stillbirth. Around the same period, Rebecca gave birth to his son. Vanessa believed she could use the confusion surrounding the hospital records to make sure Edward's biological son never received recognition.""

Rebecca began crying.

"She told me my baby had been placed with a safe family.""

Daniel looked at her.

"She lied.""

"Then where did he go?""

Daniel pointed to the photograph.

It showed a newborn baby wrapped in a white hospital blanket.

"That child was the one Edward had legally acknowledged. His name was Christopher.""

Marcus stared at the photograph.

"Then who am I?""

Daniel hesitated.

"You're Richard's biological son.""

My father froze.

I turned toward him.

"What?""

Daniel nodded.

"Richard and Evelyn had a relationship before she married Edward. They had a son together.""

My father stared at the ground.

Marcus looked between them.

"You're saying Richard is my biological father?""

My father closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

Marcus stepped backward.

"All these years...""

"I didn't know you existed until much later," my father said.

"Your mother told me you had been placed with Edward's family because she believed it would protect you.""

Marcus looked devastated.

"Why didn't you come for me?""

My father swallowed.

"Because I believed you were being raised by your biological father. I didn't know Edward wasn't your father until Evelyn showed me the original documents.""

Daniel interrupted.

"And that's why Vanessa needed the hospital records changed. If Marcus was recognized as Richard's son, he would have had a connection to the Hayes family. If Christopher disappeared, she could preserve control of the Whitmore inheritance through Marcus.""

I looked at Marcus.

"So you were used as a replacement heir.""

Daniel nodded.

"And Leo was protected because Evelyn knew the original trust would eventually reveal the truth.""

Marcus sat down on the police vehicle's bumper.

He looked like a man whose entire childhood had just been rewritten.

My father approached him.

"Marcus...""

"Don't.""

My father stopped.

"I need a minute.""

I understood.

But I couldn't afford to give him one.

"Daniel, where is Leo?""

He picked up the envelope.

"At Lake Mercer. Vanessa believes she can force you to sign a document transferring the voting shares to her.""

"Then let's go.""

Daniel shook his head.

"She also has the original trust agreement. Without it, the board may refuse to recognize Leo's rights.""

Margaret, who had just arrived with another officer, interrupted.

"That's incorrect. We have certified copies. The original is not necessary to establish the trust.""

Daniel looked surprised.

Margaret continued.

"Your mother was meticulous. She registered every amendment with an independent custodian. Vanessa cannot erase the trust by hiding one document.""

I looked at him.

"Then why does she need me?""

"Because she wants your signature on a separate settlement agreement.""

"What settlement?""

Daniel handed me the envelope.

Inside was a legal document offering to recognize Leo as a beneficiary in exchange for my agreement to relinquish all voting authority over his trust.

The final paragraph was particularly disturbing.

It required me to waive any future claims against the Whitmore family concerning the hospital incident.

I looked up.

"She wants me to sign away the truth.""

Daniel nodded.

"And she believes you'll do anything to get Leo back.""

I folded the document.

"She's right about one thing.""

"What?""

"I will do anything to bring my son home.""

I turned toward the police.

"Let's go.""

The convoy moved toward Lake Mercer.

The old residence stood beside a private lake, surrounded by tall pine trees. It had once belonged to Edward Whitmore and was now largely abandoned.

As we approached, I saw a light in the upstairs window.

My phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

"Where is Leo?""

Her voice was calm.

"He's safe.""

"Let me speak to him.""

"Not until you agree to sign.""

"I have the documents. I'll sign nothing.""

She laughed.

"Then you don't understand your position.""

"I understand that you're holding a six-year-old child against his will.""

"He's my family's heir.""

"He's my son.""

"He's Edward's biological son. You have no idea what that means.""

I looked toward the house.

"Open the door, Vanessa.""

"Bring the original trust agreement.""

"We have certified copies.""

"I want the original.""

"Then come outside and ask for it.""

Silence.

Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.

"Your mother knew this day would come. She left instructions for me to follow if you ever tried to take the company away.""

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"What instructions?""

"Ask Daniel.""

I looked toward my uncle.

He had stopped walking.

His face had gone white.

Vanessa continued.

"Your mother didn't simply leave Leo the shares. She left a second document naming the person who would inherit everything if Leo was ever declared legally unfit.""

I looked at Daniel.

"What is she talking about?""

He didn't answer.

Vanessa laughed softly.

"And that person is standing right beside you.""

The call ended.

I turned toward Daniel.

"Who?""

He stared at me.

May you like

Then he whispered:

"Me.""
