Chapter 6: The Father I Never Knew
My father didn't speak for nearly a minute.
He simply stood beside the conference table, staring at Daniel.
Then he said something I had never heard him say before.
"Get out.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Richard—"
"I said get out.""
Vanessa looked between them.
"Perhaps we should take a break.""
"No," I said.
Everyone turned toward me.
I was still holding Leo's hand.
"Nobody is leaving until someone explains what he just said.""
My father closed his eyes.
"Nia, please.""
"Did Mom meet another man before she died?""
He didn't answer.
"Did she have a relationship with Uncle Daniel?""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Your mother loved your father.""
"Which father?""
The question escaped before I could stop it.
My father looked as though I'd struck him.
I immediately regretted the words, but I couldn't take them back.
Margaret gently guided Leo toward her assistant.
"Would you like to look at some books, sweetheart?""
Leo glanced at me.
I nodded.
He followed her to the adjoining office.
Once the door closed, I faced the adults again.
"Start talking.""
My father sat down.
"Your mother was pregnant when she married me.""
I felt the room tilt.
"What?""
He looked at me.
"She was already expecting you.""
I swallowed.
"But I thought—"
"I knew. I knew from the beginning.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Richard loved Evelyn. He agreed to raise you as his own.""
My father looked up sharply.
"I don't need you explaining my marriage.""
Daniel continued.
"Your mother and I were together before she met Richard. We were engaged.""
I stared at him.
"You were going to marry her?""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't you?""
"Because Edward found out about our relationship and threatened to destroy the company. He had discovered that Evelyn and I were planning to separate the original business from his control.""
My father shook his head.
"That's not the whole story.""
Daniel looked at him.
"Then tell her.""
My father folded his hands.
"Your mother ended the engagement because she believed Daniel was becoming reckless. He wanted to confront Edward publicly. She was afraid he would get hurt.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Did you disappear because of Edward?""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Edward arranged a meeting near the river. He told me he had evidence that Evelyn was being investigated for financial misconduct. He threatened to send her to prison unless I signed away my interest in the company.""
"And you did?""
"I signed nothing.""
"What happened?""
Daniel glanced toward Vanessa.
She was staring at the floor.
"Someone attacked me. I woke up in a hospital under a different name. I was told that if I contacted Evelyn or Richard, they would both be in danger.""
I struggled to process it.
"So you stayed away for twelve years?""
"I thought I was protecting them.""
My father let out a bitter laugh.
"By letting us believe you were dead?""
Daniel's eyes filled.
"I didn't know what else to do.""
I stepped away.
"That's not an excuse.""
"No," he said quietly.
"It isn't.""
Margaret placed the photograph on the table.
"Nia, there's another document you need to see.""
She opened a small envelope and removed a birth certificate.
My name appeared at the top.
Under the father's section was Richard Hayes.
But attached to the certificate was an affidavit signed by both my parents.
It stated that Richard had legally acknowledged me as his daughter and accepted all parental rights and responsibilities.
I stared at the page.
"Why did Mom do this?""
My father answered immediately.
"Because I wanted you. I chose to be your father. Nothing about that has ever changed.""
His voice cracked.
"Not when you were born. Not when your mother died. Not when you graduated. Not when you had Leo.""
I looked at him.
He was crying.
I'd never seen him cry before.
"You're my daughter, Nia. I don't care what anyone says about biology.""
I moved toward him.
He stood, but I didn't embrace him immediately.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I was afraid you'd feel that everything between us was a lie.""
I looked down at the certificate.
"It wasn't?""
"No.""
He placed a trembling hand over mine.
"I was the man who held you when you were born. I was the one who sat beside your hospital bed when you had pneumonia. I taught you how to ride a bicycle. I walked you into your first classroom.""
His voice broke.
"I was there. Every single day.""
My eyes filled.
"I know.""
He pulled me into his arms.
For a moment, I was twelve years old again, standing in the cemetery beside my mother's grave, holding his hand because neither of us knew how to live without her.
When we separated, I turned toward Daniel.
"Why did you come back now?""
He looked toward Vanessa.
"Because she contacted me.""
Vanessa's head snapped up.
"That's a lie.""
Daniel removed a small flash drive from his pocket.
"Three months ago, she sent me copies of the original trust documents. She wanted me to challenge the validity of Evelyn's final amendment.""
Margaret took the drive.
"Do you have evidence of the communication?""
Daniel nodded.
"Emails. Bank transfers. Recorded calls.""
Vanessa stood.
"He's lying to save himself.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Would you like me to play the recording of you offering me five million dollars to declare the amendment invalid?""
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa's face became rigid.
Marcus looked at his mother.
"Five million?""
She pointed at Daniel.
"He's a criminal!""
Daniel gave a tired smile.
"Perhaps. But I kept the receipts.""
Margaret inserted the drive into her laptop.
A list of files appeared.
She opened the first recording.
Vanessa's voice filled the room.
"Once we get control of the trust, Richard won't be able to interfere. Nia will be too distracted by her engagement to understand what she's signing.""
Then another voice spoke.
A younger man.
Marcus.
"And what about Leo?""
I turned toward him.
He looked horrified.
The recording continued.
Vanessa replied:
"The boy is a child. He doesn't need to know anything about the company. By the time he's old enough to understand, everything will be legally settled.""
Marcus stepped backward.
"I never heard that.""
Daniel looked at him.
"You were in the room.""
"I left before that.""
Vanessa slammed her hand against the table.
"Turn it off!""
Margaret paused the recording.
"That is enough for today. These files will be preserved and provided to the appropriate investigators.""
Vanessa's face twisted.
"You cannot do that.""
"I can," Margaret replied.
"And I will.""
At that moment, the boardroom doors opened.
A security officer entered, followed by a woman carrying an official-looking folder.
"Mrs. Whitmore?""
Vanessa straightened.
"Yes?""
The woman identified herself as an investigator working with the company's external compliance counsel.
"We've received a formal complaint concerning attempted unauthorized transfers of trust assets and falsified corporate authorization documents.""
Vanessa looked toward Marcus.
"You did this?""
Marcus shook his head.
"No. Your decisions did.""
The investigator opened the folder.
"We'd like you to accompany us for a formal interview.""
Vanessa laughed sharply.
"You cannot possibly be serious.""
"Mrs. Whitmore, please come with us.""
As she gathered her handbag, she leaned toward me.
"This isn't over, Nia.""
I looked directly at her.
"It ended the moment you made my son feel unwanted.""
She turned toward Leo, who had returned to the room holding his dinosaur.
"That child has destroyed everything.""
I stepped between them.
"Don't ever speak about him like that again.""
The investigator escorted her out.
Daniel remained seated.
My father looked at him.
"You're not leaving either.""
Daniel nodded.
"I know.""
Marcus approached me cautiously.
"Nia?""
I didn't turn.
"I need to talk to you.""
"Not now.""
"Please. There's something else I found in my mother's office.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He removed a small photograph from his wallet.
It showed Vanessa standing beside my mother outside a maternity ward.
On the back, in my mother's handwriting, were six words:
*The truth about Leo must remain hidden.*
My stomach tightened.
"Marcus, what is this?""
He swallowed.
"I found it inside a locked drawer. There was a second envelope with it.""
"Where is the envelope?""
His eyes moved toward Leo.
"At my mother's house.""
Then he whispered something that made my blood run cold.
"According to the document inside, Leo wasn't supposed to inherit the trust because he was Evelyn's first grandchild.""
He paused.
"He was supposed to inherit it because your mother knew he was in danger before he was even born.""
I stared at him.
"What danger?""
Marcus shook his head.
"I don't know. But the envelope contains a hospital record from the week Leo was born.""
I looked at my son.
He was busy showing Grandpa his dinosaur.
Then I looked back at Marcus.
"What does the hospital record say?""
May you like
Marcus's voice dropped to a whisper.
"That someone tried to change Leo's identity before you took him home.""
