Chapter 5: The Amendment Nobody Was Allowed to Read

The room became so quiet that I could hear the air-conditioning humming above us.

I moved closer to Leo, who was sitting beside Margaret's assistant with his dinosaur backpack.

"What does that mean?"" I asked.

Daniel slowly straightened his jacket.

"It means your mother understood that the Whitmore family would eventually lose control of the company.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Daniel, perhaps you should stop speaking.""

He didn't even look at her.

"She knew Edward was taking money. She knew Vanessa was helping him. And she knew Richard would never agree to what needed to happen next.""

My father slammed his palm against the table.

"Don't you dare drag Evelyn's name into your lies.""

Daniel smiled sadly.

"You still believe she told you everything?""

My father went silent.

I looked between them.

"What is going on?""

Margaret placed the amendment in front of me.

"Let's establish the facts first.""

She read aloud.

"Under the revised family trust, the voting shares previously held in Evelyn Hayes's name shall remain protected for the benefit of her direct descendants. The trust shall not be sold, pledged, transferred, or otherwise encumbered without the written consent of the appointed trustee and the beneficiary's legal representative.""

Vanessa interrupted.

"Exactly. And as the appointed guardian, I have authority to act.""

Margaret continued.

"However, the appointment of Vanessa Whitmore as temporary guardian shall terminate immediately upon the beneficiary's mother becoming legally responsible for the child's interests.""

I frowned.

"That's me.""

"Correct.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That clause was never activated.""

Margaret turned the page.

"It was activated six years ago, when Leo was born and Nia became his legal parent.""

Vanessa's face reddened.

"That's not what the original agreement says.""

"You're looking at the wrong version.""

Margaret placed another page in front of her.

"This is the final amendment, signed by Evelyn three weeks before her death.""

I looked at the signature.

It was unmistakably my mother's.

Then I noticed something else.

A handwritten note appeared beneath the legal language.

No member of the Whitmore family may exercise guardianship or voting authority over the trust once Nia has a child. The next generation must be protected from the mistakes of the previous one.

I swallowed.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

My father answered quietly.

"Because the trust was designed to activate when the beneficiary reached adulthood or had a child, whichever came first. Your mother wanted the protection in place before anyone could interfere.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

"So you've been pretending to be Leo's guardian?""

"I was the temporary guardian appointed by Evelyn.""

"That appointment ended when Leo was born.""

"That's a technical interpretation.""

Margaret's voice became sharp.

"It's a legal one.""

One of the board members cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Whitmore, if the guardian appointment was terminated, on what authority are you requesting this transfer?""

Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

He finally spoke.

"On the authority of a separate agreement.""

He opened his briefcase and removed another document.

"This agreement was signed by Evelyn before her death. It grants me the right to act as successor representative in matters involving the original company.""

My father stared at it.

"That signature isn't hers.""

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"You're certain?""

"I watched Evelyn sign hundreds of documents. That's not her handwriting.""

Daniel pushed the paper toward Margaret.

"Then perhaps the attorney can verify it.""

Margaret examined the signature.

Her expression was difficult to read.

Finally, she looked up.

"This document requires forensic authentication.""

Vanessa seized the opportunity.

"Then we should postpone the transfer until the review is complete.""

"No," I said.

She turned toward me.

"You have no authority to make that decision.""

"I have authority over my son's legal interests. And you're attempting to transfer his protected shares.""

I looked at the board.

"Until the disputed document is authenticated, no vote should take place.""

A director near the end of the table nodded.

"I agree.""

Another followed.

Then a third.

Vanessa's composure began to crack.

"You're all making a serious mistake.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Mom, stop.""

She turned on him.

"Stay out of this.""

"No. I've stayed out of it long enough.""

He placed his phone on the table.

"I recorded the conversation you had with Daniel yesterday.""

Vanessa froze.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"What conversation?""

Marcus pressed play.

Vanessa's voice filled the room.

"Once the transfer is complete, we'll move the shares into the subsidiary. The child won't be able to challenge anything for years. By then, the company will be under our control.""

Then Daniel's voice followed.

"And what about Nia?""

Vanessa answered without hesitation.

"She'll sign whatever we put in front of her. Marcus will make sure of that.""

The recording ended.

I stared at Marcus.

He looked ashamed.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I didn't understand what they were planning until yesterday.""

"How long have you known they were trying to take Leo's shares?""

"Since last month.""

My chest tightened.

"Last month?""

Marcus lowered his head.

"I found the transfer documents in my mother's office. I thought she was restructuring the company.""

"And you didn't tell me?""

"I was trying to find proof.""

I stepped closer.

"You had proof that my child was being targeted, and you kept it from me.""

"I know.""

Vanessa suddenly snatched the phone.

"Give me that!""

Marcus caught her hand.

"Don't.""

She stared at him in disbelief.

"After everything I've done for you?""

Marcus's voice shook.

"Everything you've done for me doesn't give you the right to hurt an innocent child.""

For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely cornered.

Then she pointed at me.

"This is all because of her. She has been manipulating you from the beginning.""

Marcus shook his head.

"No. You did this yourself.""

Daniel quietly closed his briefcase.

I noticed.

"Where are you going?""

He looked at me.

"This meeting is over.""

Margaret stepped in front of the door.

"Not yet.""

Daniel's eyes hardened.

"Move.""

"Not until you answer one question.""

She removed a photograph from her folder.

It showed my mother standing outside a hospital with a newborn baby in her arms.

Beside her stood Daniel.

On the back was a handwritten date.

Three weeks before my mother died.

Margaret held it up.

"Why were you with Evelyn at St. Mary's Hospital after she had already been discharged?""

My father stared at the photograph.

"What's that?""

Daniel said nothing.

Margaret continued.

"Because this photograph contradicts the official medical timeline. Evelyn was supposedly unconscious during that period.""

I looked at my mother.

Then at Daniel.

"Why were you there?""

His face had gone pale.

Finally, he whispered:

"Because Evelyn wasn't visiting the hospital.""

He looked at Leo.

"She was meeting someone.""

"Who?"" I demanded.

Daniel's eyes shifted toward my father.

"Your biological father.""

The words hit the room like an explosion.

My father stumbled backward.

Marcus stared at me.

And Leo, sensing the tension, climbed down from his chair and ran toward me.

I wrapped my arms around him.

"Mommy?""

I kissed his hair.

"Everything's okay, sweetheart.""

May you like

But I knew it wasn't.

Because Daniel had just suggested something that could destroy the only family history I had ever known.
