Chapter 8: The Eleven Minutes
My father immediately ordered the building's security team to lock down the exits.
Leo was moved into a private conference suite with two guards outside the door.
I sat beside him, trying to keep my voice steady while he colored a picture of a dinosaur.
"Mommy, why are those men standing outside?""
"They're here to keep everyone safe, sweetheart.""
"Are we in trouble?""
I forced a smile.
"No. Not you.""
He looked at my face.
"You're scared.""
I put down the colored pencil.
"Sometimes grown-ups get worried when they don't understand something. But that doesn't mean anything bad is going to happen.""
He nodded.
Then he placed his little hand over mine.
"It's okay, Mommy. I can be brave.""
I kissed his forehead.
I wished he didn't have to be.
Outside the room, Margaret was speaking with my father and a security supervisor.
Marcus stood near the window, repeatedly checking his phone.
I walked out.
"Who sent that message?""
Marcus shook his head.
"An anonymous number.""
"Can it be traced?""
"The security team is working on it.""
My father looked toward Margaret.
"We need Claire's incident report.""
Margaret nodded.
"I've already arranged for her to meet us at a secure location.""
I turned to Marcus.
"What about the original envelope?""
"I can get into the estate's security system. My mother keeps a backup key in her office.""
"Then we're going.""
My father objected immediately.
"Absolutely not.""
"I'm not asking permission.""
"Nia, someone just threatened your child.""
"Exactly. Which is why I need to know what they did to him.""
Margaret stepped between us.
"Richard, she's right about one thing. We cannot rely on incomplete copies. We need the original evidence.""
My father looked furious.
But eventually he nodded.
"We go together. Two security officers accompany us. Nobody separates from the group.""
An hour later, we met Claire Morgan at a private law office.
She was in her early forties, with tired eyes and a nervous habit of twisting a silver ring around her finger.
When she saw me, she stood.
"Ms. Hayes?""
"Please. Call me Nia.""
She looked toward Leo.
"Is that him?""
I nodded.
Her eyes filled.
"I'm so sorry.""
I sat across from her.
"Tell me exactly what happened that night.""
Claire opened a thick folder.
"Your son was born at 11:46 p.m. He was healthy. The attending nurse placed his identification bracelet on his wrist, checked it against your hospital records, and recorded the delivery.""
She showed me a photocopy.
My name.
My hospital number.
Leo's birth time.
Everything matched.
"At 12:18 a.m., the hospital received another emergency admission. A woman named Rebecca Cole delivered a baby boy shortly after one in the morning.""
She placed another page beside the first.
"Both babies were assigned to the same nursery.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"It was a busy night. The maternity ward had limited space.""
My father leaned forward.
"Continue.""
Claire took a breath.
"At 2:14 a.m., a hospital administrator entered the nursery with a transfer request. She said one of the babies needed to be moved for additional testing.""
"Which baby?""
"Your son.""
I felt my fingers go cold.
"Who authorized it?""
"Dr. Bennett.""
Margaret wrote something down.
"Was the transfer completed?""
"Not officially. The nurse assigned to Leo refused because his identification didn't match the transfer request.""
"Then what happened?""
Claire looked at me.
"Vanessa Whitmore arrived approximately twenty minutes later.""
I closed my eyes.
"She told the nurse that there had been a private family arrangement. She demanded access to the nursery.""
My father slammed his hand against the desk.
"She had no authority to do that.""
"I know.""
Claire opened another page.
"At 2:51 a.m., the nursery alarm registered an unauthorized door opening. The camera system recorded eleven minutes of missing footage.""
"Eleven minutes," I repeated.
"Yes. When the footage resumed, both babies were back in their original bassinets.""
My heart pounded.
"How do you know they were the same babies?""
Claire looked down.
"I don't.""
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
"What?""
"I checked the identification bracelets afterward. Both were intact. Both carried the correct names. But the babies had been moved during the eleven-minute gap.""
My father stood.
"This is outrageous.""
Claire flinched.
"I'm sorry.""
I reached across the desk.
"Don't apologize. You're helping me.""
She pulled out a final document.
"This is the incident report I kept.""
The report described an irregularity in the newborn identification process. It also recorded a complaint from a nurse who claimed she had seen a male visitor carrying a second hospital bracelet.
The visitor's name was listed.
*Daniel Hayes.*
I turned toward my uncle.
He was standing behind my father.
His expression had become unreadable.
"Did you go to the hospital that night?""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
He looked at me.
"Because Evelyn asked me to.""
"What did she want?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said, "She wanted me to protect you and your baby.""
I shook my head.
"From whom?""
"Edward Whitmore.""
My father looked furious.
"Stop speaking in riddles.""
Daniel finally sat down.
"Edward believed the company belonged to him. But Evelyn had discovered that the original ownership documents contained a provision that could return control to her descendants.""
Margaret frowned.
"That doesn't explain the hospital.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Edward had a son.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Marcus?""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"Edward had another son. One nobody in the Whitmore family was allowed to mention.""
I stared at him.
"Who?""
Daniel's eyes shifted toward Claire.
She looked equally confused.
"His name was Christopher Whitmore," Daniel continued.
"He was born years before Marcus. His mother died shortly after childbirth.""
My father shook his head.
"Edward never had another son.""
"He did. And Rebecca Cole was his partner.""
I looked down at the hospital record.
Rebecca Cole.
The other mother.
The other baby.
"Are you saying the other newborn was Edward's child?""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then why was Vanessa involved?""
"Because she believed Christopher was entitled to something that would threaten Marcus's inheritance.""
I stared at the photograph of the two hospital bassinets.
"Did she switch the babies?""
Daniel's face tightened.
"I don't know.""
"Did you?""
"No.""
"Then what did you do during those eleven minutes?""
He looked toward my father.
"I took a document from the nursery administrator. It was an instruction from Edward to remove one of the babies from the hospital and place him with a private guardian.""
My throat tightened.
"Which baby?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Rebecca's.""
"Why?""
"Because Edward wanted to hide the child until he could establish his inheritance rights.""
I struggled to understand.
"So you stopped them?""
"I tried.""
"Did you succeed?""
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I don't know.""
Claire suddenly reached for another sheet.
"Wait.""
She pointed to the bottom of the report.
"There's a handwritten note here.""
Margaret leaned closer.
It was a short sentence written in blue ink.
Baby B was released to authorized family representative.
Underneath was a signature.
Vanessa Whitmore.
My stomach dropped.
"Where was Baby B released?""
Claire checked the attached registration sheet.
Then she looked at me.
"To a private address in Connecticut.""
I recognized the address.
It belonged to the Whitmore family's old country estate.
Marcus stared at the page.
"That's where my mother keeps the original documents.""
I turned toward him.
"Then that's where we're going.""
Before anyone could object, my phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
This time, there was no photograph.
Only one sentence.
*Ask Richard why he never told you about the baby he brought home.*
I slowly raised my eyes toward my father.
May you like
He was staring at the message.
And for the first time in my life, he looked afraid of me.
