Chapter 11: The Recording Hidden in Brielle's Backpack

Dad didn't sleep that night.

Neither did I.

At eleven-thirty, I found him sitting in the kitchen with the notebook open and Mom's photograph beside his coffee.

Maya was asleep upstairs.

Brielle had gone to her room after giving Dad the notebook.

I sat across from him.

“Do you believe her?””

Dad rubbed his eyes.

“I believe she's finally telling us what she knows.””

“She's still been cruel to Maya.””

“I know.””

He looked at the broken bicycle basket on the counter.

“But I also know Denise spent years teaching Brielle that being cruel was how you stayed safe.””

I thought about that.

It didn't excuse what Brielle had done.

But it explained why she seemed terrified whenever Denise entered a room.

Dad turned another page.

“Look at this.””

The notebook contained a list of payments to Richard.

Some were marked with initials.

Others had short descriptions.

One entry caught my attention.

*C.D. — original statement — $8,500.*

“C.D.?”” I asked.

“Claire Danielson.””

Dad's expression tightened.

“Richard was paid to alter the original accident records.””

He turned another page.

There was a date beside another payment.

The same date Mom died.

I stared at it.

“Dad, why would Richard accept money to change a death report?””

Dad didn't answer.

Instead, he picked up his phone and called Marcus.

Marcus arrived twenty minutes later.

He examined the notebook and shook his head.

“This is worse than I thought.””

“What does C.D. mean?”” Dad asked.

“Claire Danielson. But I believe the payment was made for something else.””

“What?””

Marcus pulled out a small device.

“An audio recording.””

Dad looked at it.

“Where did you get that?””

“Richard sent it to me yesterday.””

He pressed play.

At first, there was static.

Then Denise's voice.

“She's not going to sign anything.””

A man's voice answered.

“Then make sure Daniel does.””

Denise sighed.

“He doesn't remember that night.””

“That's the point.””

Dad's face turned pale.

The recording continued.

Denise spoke again.

“What if he starts remembering?””

The man laughed.

“Then remind him what happened to Claire.””

Dad gripped the table.

“That's Richard.””

Marcus nodded.

The recording continued.

“Daniel was there,” Richard said.

“He saw the ambulance. He saw the hospital report. He signed the consent form.””

Dad suddenly stood.

“Stop it.””

Marcus paused the recording.

Dad was breathing heavily.

“I signed a hospital consent form?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“For Claire?””

“Yes.””

Dad looked at me.

“I don't remember.””

Marcus restarted the recording.

Richard's voice continued.

“The original medical report is gone. The hospital transfer records are gone. All that's left is the copy I prepared.””

Denise spoke.

“And the children?””

Richard answered.

“Daniel will take care of them. That's what you wanted.””

There was a pause.

Then Denise said something that made my skin crawl.

“What about the other child?””

Richard answered immediately.

“Maya is the important one. Her mother made sure of that.””

The recording ended.

Dad stared at Marcus.

“What does he mean by the other child?””

Marcus looked toward the stairs.

“Brielle.””

Dad shook his head.

“Why would Maya be important?””

“Because Claire was protecting her from something.””

Marcus reached into his folder and removed a photocopied birth certificate.

It belonged to Maya.

There was nothing unusual about the first page.

But the second page contained an amended medical record.

The original document listed a different hospital.

Dad frowned.

“Why was Maya born at St. Mary's?””

Marcus nodded.

“That's the question.””

Dad looked at him.

“What do you know?””

“Claire contacted me about three weeks before she died. She said she'd discovered a discrepancy in Maya's birth records.””

My heart started pounding.

“What discrepancy?””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“She believed someone had accessed Maya's medical file and changed information about her biological father.””

Dad stared at him.

“That's impossible. I'm her father.””

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

“According to the original medical record, you were listed as the father.””

Dad exhaled.

“Then what was changed?””

Marcus placed a second document beside it.

The original file included a note about a blood transfusion Maya had received shortly after birth.

Dad looked at the note.

“I remember that. She had complications.””

Marcus nodded.

“Claire was told the blood came from an anonymous emergency donor. But the hospital records show that the donor was identified.””

“Who?””

Marcus turned the page.

Dad read the name.

His face changed.

The donor was Richard Warren.

I stared at him.

“Why would Richard donate blood to Maya?””

Marcus answered carefully.

“Because he was at the hospital that night.””

Dad looked confused.

“Richard wasn't there when Maya was born.””

“That's what you were told.””

Dad stood motionless.

Marcus continued.

“Claire discovered the truth shortly before her death. She believed Richard had been involved in a medical decision that affected Maya's future.””

I looked at the birth certificate again.

“What kind of decision?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Something related to Maya's inheritance and her identity.””

Dad picked up the document.

Then he looked at the date.

It was the same day as the original trust agreement.

“Richard was there,” he whispered.

Marcus nodded.

“And he wasn't alone.””

The kitchen door suddenly opened.

Brielle stood there holding her phone.

“I heard the recording.””

Dad turned toward her.

“You should be asleep.””

“I couldn't.””

She walked toward the table.

“I found something on Mom's old phone.””

She placed it beside the documents.

“It's a voicemail.””

Dad looked at the screen.

“From whom?””

“Richard.””

She pressed play.

A man's voice filled the kitchen.

“Denise, this is your last chance. The original file is still with the hospital. If Daniel finds it, everything falls apart.””

There was a pause.

Then Richard continued.

“And if Marcus tells him what happened in the delivery room, you won't be able to protect Brielle either.””

The message ended.

Dad slowly looked up.

“What delivery room?””

Brielle shook her head.

“I don't know.””

But Marcus had gone completely still.

Dad noticed.

“Marcus?””

He looked at Dad.

Then he spoke carefully.

“Daniel, before you hear anything else, I need to tell you something about Maya's birth.””

Dad stepped closer.

“What?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Claire wasn't the only woman in that delivery room.””

Dad's face drained of color.

“Who else?””

Marcus looked toward Brielle.

“Denise.””

Brielle covered her mouth.

Marcus continued.

“And the reason Denise had access to Maya's medical records was because she was the person who brought Richard into the hospital that night.””

Dad stared at him.

“Why?””

May you like

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“Because Maya's birth was connected to a secret Richard had been paid to keep.””
