Chapter 12: What Happened in the Delivery Room
Dad demanded that Marcus explain everything.
But Marcus refused to continue without the original hospital records.
He said he needed to be certain.
That answer only made Dad angrier.
“You've spent three days telling me my family is built on lies. Now you're asking me to wait?””
Marcus remained calm.
“I'm asking you not to accuse someone of something we haven't proven.””
Dad paced across the kitchen.
“Richard was in the delivery room. Denise brought him there. My wife's records were changed. And you expect me to sit quietly?””
“No,” Marcus replied.
“I expect you to protect Maya while we establish what happened.””
Dad stopped.
Then he looked toward the stairs.
“Where is she?””
“Sleeping,” I answered.
Dad nodded.
“Then that's what matters right now.””
At eight the next morning, we drove to St. Mary's Hospital.
Dad brought Maya with us because he refused to leave her alone with anyone connected to Denise.
Brielle came too.
She sat in the back seat beside Maya, keeping her hands folded in her lap.
Neither girl spoke much.
At the hospital, Marcus introduced us to a retired records administrator named Evelyn Brooks.
She had worked at St. Mary's for more than twenty years.
She greeted Dad warmly.
“I'm sorry about what your family has been through.””
Dad shook her hand.
“I just want the truth.””
Evelyn led us into a small office.
She placed an old file on the desk.
“This is the original maternity record from the day Maya was born.””
Dad opened it.
The first page showed Mom's name.
The second showed the delivery details.
The third contained a handwritten note.
Dad read it twice.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
“Why does this say there were two newborn identification bracelets?””
Evelyn adjusted her glasses.
“Because there were two babies involved in the emergency that night.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Two babies?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Another mother arrived shortly after Claire. There was a complication, and both newborns required immediate medical attention.””
Dad looked at the record.
“What was the other mother's name?””
Evelyn turned the page.
The name was Denise Danielson.
Brielle stared at her mother’s name.
“Mom gave birth here?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
Brielle shook her head.
“She told me I was born at a different hospital.””
Dad looked at Marcus.
“You knew?””
Marcus nodded.
“I suspected it.””
Evelyn continued.
“Both babies required blood products. There was a shortage that evening, and an emergency donor was called in.””
Dad looked at the donor record.
Richard Warren.
I stared at the name.
“He donated blood to both babies?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
Dad looked confused.
“Why would a financial adviser be at the hospital?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“He wasn't there as a financial adviser. He was listed as a family friend of Denise.””
Brielle's face turned white.
“Why would Mom bring him?””
Evelyn opened another section of the file.
“Because Richard was the person who had arranged the medical paperwork.””
Dad looked up.
“What paperwork?””
Evelyn placed a separate document on the desk.
It was a consent form.
The signature belonged to Claire.
But the date had been changed.
Dad examined it closely.
“This isn't my wife's handwriting.””
Evelyn nodded.
“The original document was signed by Claire, but the date was altered later. We discovered the discrepancy during a records audit.””
“Why?””
“Because someone requested a copy of the file three years ago and challenged the identification details.””
Dad looked at Marcus.
“Who?””
Marcus answered.
“Richard.””
Evelyn continued.
“He requested that the records be sealed pending a legal review. The hospital refused because he wasn't a legal guardian or parent.””
Dad leaned forward.
“Then why is there an amended birth record?””
Evelyn opened the final page.
“Because the hospital received a court order.””
Dad stared at it.
“Who requested it?””
Evelyn pointed to the signature.
Denise Danielson.
Beneath it was another name.
Richard Warren.
The order claimed that the original birth record contained an error and needed correction.
Dad looked furious.
“What error?””
Evelyn turned the page.
The correction concerned a medical donor's identity and a note about the newborn's biological relationship to another patient.
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn took a breath.
“It's complicated. The original record indicates that Maya was part of a confidential medical arrangement involving a donor who later became financially connected to the family.””
Dad stared at her.
“Are you saying Maya was adopted?””
“No,” Evelyn replied quickly.
“The record does not establish that. It establishes that a donor-related medical agreement was signed.””
Marcus looked at Dad.
“Claire discovered that Richard had used the agreement to create a financial obligation.””
Dad shook his head.
“Why would a medical donor have anything to do with an inheritance?””
Evelyn removed a final document.
“This is the agreement.””
Dad read the first paragraph.
Then his hands began shaking.
The document stated that a donor had provided emergency assistance in exchange for a confidential payment arrangement.
But the payment had never been made.
I looked at Marcus.
“Who was the donor?””
Evelyn pointed to the signature.
Richard Warren.
Dad stared at the page.
“Then why does Denise owe him money?””
Marcus answered.
“Because Richard claimed that Denise had promised to reimburse him through the family trust.””
Dad shook his head.
“That makes no sense.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“Claire discovered that Richard had been using the medical agreement as leverage. He threatened to expose confidential information unless Denise continued making payments.””
Brielle looked at her mother.
“Why would she agree?””
Marcus turned toward her.
“Because she was afraid the truth would destroy her marriage and your relationship with Daniel.””
Dad's voice became cold.
“What truth?””
Marcus looked at the final page.
“Richard believed that one of the babies had been deliberately misidentified during the emergency.””
Silence filled the office.
Maya looked confused.
“Does that mean I was switched?””
Evelyn immediately shook her head.
“No, sweetheart. Nothing in this document proves that.””
Dad took Maya's hand.
“That's right. Nobody is going to make assumptions about you.””
But I couldn't stop staring at the file.
The hospital had documented two newborns.
Two mothers.
A financial agreement.
And a later court order changing the records.
Then Evelyn pointed to a small notation at the bottom.
“There's one more thing.””
Dad looked up.
“What?””
“The original identification photographs were never included in the amended file.””
“Where are they?””
Evelyn checked the archive number.
“According to our system, they were transferred to an external legal storage facility.””
Marcus frowned.
“Which facility?””
Evelyn wrote down the address.
Dad recognized it immediately.
“That's Richard's old office.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No. That's worse.””
Dad looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Richard closed that office six months ago.””
Evelyn checked the final transfer record.
Then she turned the monitor toward us.
The archived documents had been moved to a private storage unit under a different name.
Dad read the name aloud.
“Denise Danielson.””
Brielle closed her eyes.
“She kept them.””
Maya looked at Dad.
“Why would Mom's records be in Denise's storage unit?””
Dad had no answer.
Then his phone rang.
The caller ID showed an unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice spoke.
“Daniel, this is Richard Warren.””
Dad's expression hardened.
“What do you want?””
Richard sounded breathless.
“Listen carefully. You need to stop looking through the hospital records.””
“Why?””
“Because you're getting close to something you don't understand.””
Dad looked at Marcus.
“Then explain it.””
Richard paused.
Then he said:
“Denise didn't steal Maya's money because she wanted to help Brielle.””
Dad gripped the phone.
“Then why?””
Richard's voice dropped.
“Because the original trust wasn't supposed to belong to Maya alone.””
Dad went completely still.
Richard continued.
“Your wife created that trust to protect a child who wasn't legally recognized as hers.””
I felt my heart pounding.
Dad looked toward Maya.
Then Richard delivered the final blow.
“And Daniel, the child Claire was trying to protect wasn't Maya.””
The call ended.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Brielle whispered:
“Who was it?””
Marcus looked at the hospital file.
May you like
And slowly turned toward her.
“Brielle.””
