Chapter 14: The Last Lie Denise Couldn't Hide

The storage facility was nearly empty when we arrived.

Rows of metal doors stretched beneath fluorescent lights. The manager checked the authorization documents, then led us toward Unit 214.

Dad unlocked it with the key Evelyn had provided.

Inside were several cardboard boxes, old photographs, and a metal filing cabinet.

Marcus opened the cabinet.

The first drawer contained financial records.

The second held medical documents.

The third was locked.

Dad examined the lock.

“Where's the key?””

Marcus checked the envelope.

“Richard said it was attached to the original trust file.””

I searched through the boxes.

Then I found a small envelope marked with Mom's handwriting.

*For Daniel. Only if Denise refuses to tell the truth.*

Dad took it.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a key.

The locked drawer clicked open.

There were three folders.

One contained the original birth records.

Another contained the trust documents.

The third was labeled:

*THE NIGHT CLAIRE DIED.*

Dad stared at it.

Then he opened it.

The first document was an accident report.

The second was a hospital discharge record.

The third was a handwritten statement.

Dad read it.

His face went white.

“What's wrong?”” I asked.

He handed it to me.

The statement was written by Mom.

Daniel, if anything happens to me, please don't let Denise convince you that Brielle is your enemy. She is a child. She has done nothing wrong.

I continued reading.

Richard has threatened to expose a secret involving Brielle's birth. Denise believes she can silence him with money, but she doesn't understand what he's really trying to obtain.

The next paragraph made my hands tremble.

Brielle is not Richard's daughter, and Marcus is not the only man Denise has been hiding things from.

I looked up.

“Dad?””

He took the paper.

Marcus moved closer.

Dad continued reading.

The truth about Brielle's biological father is recorded in the sealed DNA report. I have arranged for the original results to remain with the trust documents.

Brielle stepped forward.

“Does that mean Marcus isn't my father?””

Marcus looked at the paper.

For the first time, he seemed genuinely uncertain.

Dad opened the second folder.

There it was.

A sealed laboratory report.

The date matched Brielle's birth.

Dad carefully unfolded it.

The first page listed Denise's name.

The second listed Marcus Hale.

The third contained a genetic comparison.

Dad read the result.

Then he slowly looked at Brielle.

“Marcus isn't your biological father.””

Brielle's knees nearly buckled.

“What?””

Marcus took the document.

He read it twice.

Then he stepped away from the table.

“I was told the test confirmed it.””

Dad looked at him.

“Who told you?””

Marcus stared at the report.

“Richard.””

Dad's expression darkened.

“He lied to you too.””

Brielle began shaking her head.

“Then who is my father?””

Nobody answered.

Dad opened the final page.

A name was printed beneath the genetic results.

*Daniel Danielson.*

Dad stopped breathing.

I looked at him.

Then at Brielle.

Then back at the report.

“No,” I whispered.

Brielle stared at the page.

“Dad?””

Dad sat down.

The room seemed to tilt around us.

Marcus looked at Denise's handwritten statement.

“Claire knew.””

Dad covered his face.

“She knew Brielle was mine?””

Marcus nodded.

“And she was trying to protect both girls from the consequences of what Denise had done.””

Brielle stepped backward.

“So I'm not Marcus's daughter?””

Marcus shook his head slowly.

“Apparently not.””

Brielle looked at Dad.

“Then you're my father?””

Dad couldn't speak.

She began crying.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Dad finally looked up.

“Because I didn't know.””

Brielle shook her head.

“Mom told me you weren't my real father. She said you only stayed with us because you felt sorry for me.””

Dad stood.

“Brielle, I didn't know the truth. But I have loved you as my daughter since the day I met you.””

She stared at him.

“Then why did Mom lie?””

Marcus answered.

“Because she wanted to control everyone.””

He pointed to the laboratory report.

“Richard helped her hide the truth. He convinced me that I was Brielle's father because he wanted access to the family trust.””

Dad frowned.

“How?””

Marcus explained.

“Richard had promised Denise that he could use the DNA report to challenge the trust's beneficiary structure. If Brielle were his biological child, he believed he could claim certain rights through her.””

I stared at him.

“So he forged the test?””

“Yes.””

Dad looked furious.

“Why?””

“Because Richard wanted control of the trust. He believed that if he could establish a false biological connection, he could challenge Claire's original arrangements.””

Brielle wiped her face.

“And Mom knew?””

Marcus nodded.

“She knew the real result. That's why she kept the original report hidden.””

Dad picked up the handwritten statement.

He read the final paragraph.

Then he began crying.

Daniel, please remember that Brielle is your daughter too. Don't punish her for the lies adults have told. I know this will hurt, but I believe you are strong enough to love both girls.

Dad pressed the letter against his chest.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Brielle walked toward him.

“Can I call you Dad?””

He opened his arms.

“You never needed permission.””

She collapsed against him.

I watched them embrace.

The girl who had spent months trying to convince herself that Maya was loved more had just discovered that she had never been unloved.

But there was still one person missing from the story.

Denise.

Dad looked at the remaining documents.

“Where is she?””

Marcus checked his phone.

“She knows we found the storage unit.””

“How?””

Before Marcus could answer, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice spoke.

“It's Denise.””

I put the call on speaker.

Dad immediately stood.

“What do you want?””

Denise sounded exhausted.

“I want to see my daughter.””

Brielle looked at the phone.

“Which one?””

There was silence.

Then Denise whispered:

“Brielle.””

Brielle's eyes filled with tears.

“Why did you tell me Daniel wasn't my father?””

Denise began crying.

“Because I was afraid you'd leave me.””

“Why did you steal Maya's money?””

“I was desperate.””

“Why did you destroy her life?””

Denise's voice became sharper.

“I never wanted to hurt Maya.””

Brielle looked at the broken bicycle photograph on her phone.

“You let me hurt her.””

Denise didn't answer.

Dad took the phone.

“Where are you?””

“Home.””

“Stay there. We're coming.””

Denise hesitated.

Then she said something unexpected.

“Daniel, before you come, there's something else you need to know.””

Dad's expression hardened.

“What now?””

“I didn't cause Claire's accident.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Denise.””

She continued.

“I was driving, yes. But I wasn't the one who made her crash.””

Dad looked confused.

“Then who?””

Denise began sobbing.

“Claire grabbed the steering wheel because she saw something in the back seat.””

Dad froze.

“What?””

Denise whispered:

“Brielle's baby photograph wasn't the only thing in the car.””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“Your wife was carrying the original DNA report. And someone had already switched it before the accident.””

The call ended.

Dad stared at the phone.

Marcus looked at the documents.

Then he noticed a small envelope tucked behind the laboratory report.

He pulled it out.

Inside was another DNA test.

This one had been conducted three months before Claire died.

And the result was different.
