Chapter 5: The Secret My Mother Took to Her Grave

Dad drove to Richard Warren's office that afternoon.

He asked me to stay home with Maya, but I refused to let him leave without explaining what was happening.

Finally, he agreed to take me.

Maya stayed with our neighbor, Mrs. Collins.

Richard's office occupied the third floor of an old brick building downtown. The hallway smelled of coffee and furniture polish.

A receptionist led us into a conference room.

Richard was already waiting.

He was older than the man in the photograph, with silver hair and thin glasses.

When he saw Dad, he stood immediately.

“Daniel.””

Dad didn't shake his hand.

“Start talking.””

Richard glanced at me.

“Is she supposed to be here?””

“She is Maya's sister. Nothing you say about her family should be hidden from her.””

Richard nodded.

Then he opened a leather folder.

“Your wife established a protected trust for Maya before she passed away.””

Dad frowned.

“A trust?””

“Yes. She wanted Maya to have financial security when she became an adult.””

“How much?””

“Initially, eighteen thousand dollars. There were also provisions for additional contributions.””

Dad leaned forward.

“Then why did the account show zero?””

Richard placed a document on the table.

“Because Denise requested a transfer.””

“Was she authorized?””

“No.””

“Then how did she do it?””

Richard adjusted his glasses.

“She presented a document claiming you had approved the transfer and that the funds were being moved into a temporary family account.””

Dad stared at him.

“I never signed that.””

“I know.””

“Then why did the bank accept it?””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Because the document included a signature that appeared to be yours.””

Dad pushed the paper away.

“That's forgery.””

Richard didn't argue.

I looked at the document.

The signature was convincing.

But I noticed something strange.

The date beside it was written in a different handwriting.

“Who prepared this?”” I asked.

Richard looked at me.

“Denise.””

Dad's jaw tightened.

“Why didn't you report it?””

“I attempted to contact you. Three letters were sent to your old address. All three were returned.””

“Why didn't you call?””

Richard hesitated.

“Because Denise told me you had authorized her to handle the account and that you didn't want further contact.””

Dad stood.

“She lied.””

Richard nodded.

“I understand that now.””

Dad paced toward the window.

“What was this agreement between Denise and my wife?””

Richard opened another folder.

“This is the part I was hoping you wouldn't have to discover this way.””

He removed a handwritten letter.

The paper was yellowed at the edges.

I recognized Mom's handwriting immediately.

Richard slid it toward Dad.

“Your wife asked me to keep this private unless Maya's trust was ever compromised.””

Dad picked it up.

His hands trembled.

The letter began:

Daniel, if you're reading this, I hope it means Maya has grown up surrounded by love.

Dad stopped.

He swallowed and continued.

There is something I never told you because I wanted to spare you the pain.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Dad continued reading silently.

Then he lowered the letter.

“What is this?”” he whispered.

Richard folded his hands.

“Your wife discovered that Denise had been borrowing money from her before they became friends.””

Dad looked up.

“Denise and my wife knew each other?””

“Yes. They met through a community fundraising organization.””

I frowned.

That was something I'd never heard.

Mom had volunteered at several local charities, but Denise had never mentioned knowing her.

Richard continued.

“Your wife discovered that Denise had accumulated significant debts. She offered to help her under certain conditions.””

“What conditions?””

“That Denise would never involve Maya in her financial problems, and that any money borrowed would be repaid.””

Dad stared at the letter.

“Why would my wife help her?””

Richard looked down.

“Because Denise had a daughter.””

I understood immediately.

“Brielle?””

Richard nodded.

“Your wife knew Brielle was struggling with the instability caused by her mother's debts. She didn't want a child to suffer.””

Dad slowly sat down.

“Then what happened?””

“Denise signed an agreement promising to repay the money. Your wife also arranged a separate fund to protect Maya.””

Dad looked at the photograph again.

“And the man in the picture?””

“That's me.””

I blinked.

“But Dad said you were her financial adviser.””

“I was. I also witnessed the agreement.””

Dad pressed his fingers against his forehead.

“Then why does the photograph say the agreement was never paid?””

Richard hesitated.

“Because Denise stopped making payments.””

“How much does she owe?””

Richard turned another document around.

“Thirty-two thousand dollars.””

Dad stared at the number.

“That's more than the original inheritance.””

“Interest and contractual penalties,” Richard explained.

“However, the larger issue is the money transferred from Maya's trust.””

Dad's voice became dangerous.

“How much was taken?””

Richard opened the final page.

“Twenty-seven thousand, six hundred dollars.””

I felt dizzy.

“Twenty-seven thousand?””

Richard nodded.

“Some of it was transferred directly. Some was moved through accounts associated with Denise's business.””

Dad stared at the page.

“Business?””

Richard closed the folder.

“Your wife discovered Denise was operating a small private lending arrangement. She was using borrowed money to finance other people's debts.””

Dad looked confused.

“Why would she do that?””

Richard's expression darkened.

“Because one of those people was her brother.””

I remembered the man in the photograph.

“Is he the person who owes her money?””

Richard shook his head.

“No. He's the person who was supposed to receive it.””

Dad leaned forward.

“Who is he?””

Richard looked at him.

“His name is Marcus Hale.””

Dad went completely still.

I had never heard that name.

But Richard's next words made everything worse.

“Marcus is Brielle's biological father.””

The room fell silent.

Dad stared at Richard.

“Denise told me Marcus abandoned Brielle before she was born.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“That's the story she wanted everyone to believe.””

“Then what's the truth?””

Richard slid one last document across the table.

It was a payment authorization.

The recipient's name was clearly printed.

*MARCUS HALE.*

The amount was twenty-seven thousand, six hundred dollars.

And the date matched the final transfer from Maya's savings.

Dad looked up.

“Denise used Maya's money to pay Brielle's biological father?””

Richard nodded.

“But Daniel, there's something even more troubling.””

Dad's fingers tightened around the document.

“What?””

May you like

Richard pointed to the signature.

“The payment was authorized after Denise claimed Marcus was dead.””
