Chapter 1: The Message From Sky’s Mom

“Tell them the truth.””

My voice shook, but I did not lower it.

The birthday room went silent.

Colorful balloons floated above the cake table. The banner behind us read *HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CALEB*, but nobody was looking at the decorations anymore.

They were looking at me.

At the white envelope clutched in my hand.

And at my stepbrother, Caleb.

He stood across the living room in his cream varsity jacket, surrounded by his friends and cousins. At first, he looked angry.

Then he saw the envelope.

His face changed.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

My dad, Marcus, turned toward him slowly.

“Then explain it.””

Caleb looked at Dad.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

No one spoke.

I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

I could hear someone’s little child whispering behind the couch.

I could hear my own heartbeat pounding so loudly that I thought everyone else could hear it too.

“I found out,” I said.

Vanessa stepped close to me and placed a hand around my arm.

Not hard.

But not gently either.

“Maya,” she said in a quiet warning voice, “this is not the time.””

I looked down at her hand.

Then I pulled away.

“No,” I said.

“This is exactly the time.””

Dad looked confused.

“What did you find out?””

Before I could answer, the phone on the coffee table began to vibrate.

Everyone turned.

The sound seemed too loud in the silent room.

Caleb moved first.

He took one fast step toward the phone.

Dad noticed.

“Stop,” Dad said.

Caleb froze.

The screen lit up.

A new voice message notification appeared.

*REBECCA — SKY’S MOM*

My stomach dropped.

I had seen that name before.

Three nights earlier, I had gone into the laundry room looking for my missing burgundy cardigan. Caleb’s jacket had been thrown over the back of a chair, and his phone had slipped from the pocket when I moved it.

I should have walked away.

But the screen flashed with a message from a woman named Rebecca.

*Please make Caleb call me. This is about Sky.*

I did not know who Sky was.

Then I saw the second message.

*He cannot pretend he doesn’t know what happened.*

I had taken a picture of the messages before Caleb came into the room.

And this morning, before his birthday guests arrived, I found the envelope hidden beneath the loose floorboard in his closet.

Dad picked up the phone.

“Who’s Rebecca?”” he asked.

Caleb’s jaw tightened.

“It’s nobody.””

Dad stopped.

“Nobody’s mother is leaving you voice messages during your birthday party?””

Caleb looked down at the floor.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Marcus, don’t interrogate him in front of everyone.””

Dad turned toward her.

“Maya is standing here with an envelope, Caleb is terrified of a phone call, and you want me to ignore it?””

Vanessa's lips pressed together.

I stared at Caleb.

He had spent years treating me like I was invisible.

He laughed when Vanessa called me too sensitive.

He told his friends I only lived in the house because Dad felt guilty after my mom died.

But now he looked frightened.

Not embarrassed.

Frightened.

Dad picked up the phone.

The screen glowed against his hand.

*REBECCA — SKY’S MOM — VOICE MESSAGE.*

Caleb rushed forward.

“Don’t play that.””

Dad looked directly at him.

“Why?””

Caleb opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I held up the white envelope.

“Because he knows what’s inside this.””

Everyone looked at the envelope again.

Vanessa’s face lost color.

Dad’s eyes moved from me to Caleb.

“What is in that envelope, Maya?””

My fingers tightened around it.

“I don’t know yet,” I admitted.

“I found it in Caleb’s room. But it has Sky’s name on it.””

Caleb’s eyes widened.

“You went into my room?””

“You lied to Dad,” I said.

“You lied to all of us.””

The phone vibrated again.

The voice message was still waiting.

Dad looked at the screen.

Then he pressed play.

A small audio bar began moving across the phone.

A woman's trembling voice filled the room.

“Marcus, if you're listening to this, please understand that I've tried everything. I've called Caleb. I've sent letters. I've even asked Vanessa to help me, but she keeps telling me to leave your family alone.””

Vanessa took a step backward.

Rebecca continued.

“Sky deserves to know what happened to her father. And before Caleb tells you another lie, ask him about the night of October seventeenth. Ask him what he did with the hospital bracelet.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Dad slowly lowered the phone.

“What hospital bracelet?”” he asked.

Caleb swallowed.

“It's complicated.””

“Then make it simple.””

“Dad, please.””

“Who is Sky?””

Caleb rubbed both hands over his face.

Vanessa suddenly reached for the phone.

“That's enough. This is a private family matter.””

Dad moved it out of her reach.

“Apparently, it became a family matter when somebody started hiding hospital documents in my house.””

I looked at the envelope.

There was something else I hadn't noticed before.

A small handwritten date in the lower corner.

October 17.

The same date Rebecca had mentioned.

I turned the envelope over.

My fingers found the flap.

Inside were several folded papers, a faded photograph, and a small hospital wristband.

The photograph slipped out first.

It showed a young woman sitting in a hospital bed, holding a newborn baby.

The woman was Rebecca.

And standing beside her was Caleb.

He looked younger, perhaps sixteen or seventeen.

His arm was around her shoulders.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

*Caleb and Sky. October 17. The day everything changed.*

I looked at my stepbrother.

“Caleb, why were you at the hospital?””

He didn't answer.

Dad took the photograph from me.

His eyes narrowed.

“You told me you were at Tyler's house that night.””

Caleb stared at the carpet.

“I was.””

“You were with this woman?””

“Dad, I can explain.””

“Were you involved with Rebecca?””

“No!””

The answer came so quickly that even I believed it.

But then Caleb looked at Vanessa.

And Vanessa looked away.

That was when I understood something.

This wasn't just Caleb's secret.

She knew.

I opened the envelope and removed the first document.

It was a hospital discharge summary.

The patient's name was Rebecca Collins.

The baby's name was Sky Collins.

But the section listing the second parent had been folded inward.

I unfolded it.

There was a name.

*Marcus Reed.*

My father's name.

The room seemed to tilt.

I read it again.

Then once more.

Dad took the paper from my hand.

His face went completely blank.

“What is this?”” he whispered.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Caleb finally looked up.

“Dad, you need to hear me.””

Dad stared at him.

“Why is my name on a birth certificate for a child I have never met?””

Caleb's voice broke.

“Because Sky is your daughter.””

And just like that, my entire family changed.

But the worst part wasn't that my father might have another child.

It was the final page inside the envelope.

A handwritten note from Rebecca.

It contained only one sentence.

*Marcus, before you decide what to do with Sky, you need to know what Vanessa promised me in exchange for keeping her existence a secret.*

I looked at my stepmother.

May you like

She was already crying.

And for the first time in my life, I wondered whether my mother's death had been the only tragedy Vanessa had ever hidden from my father.
