Chapter 12: The Bloodline Nobody Expected

Dad read the DNA report twice.

Then he placed it on the coffee table.

“Who ordered this?””

Lily folded her hands.

“Patricia.””

“Why?””

“Because she wanted to know whether the stories Vanessa told her were true.””

Dad shook his head.

“This report doesn't make sense.””

Lily looked at him.

“Your father had a secret.””

Dad's jaw tightened.

“My father died twenty years ago.””

“I know.””

“He was married to my mother for forty-three years.””

“I know that too.””

“Then what are you suggesting?””

Lily took a breath.

“That Daniel and you may not have had the same biological father.””

Nobody moved.

Dad stared at her.

“You're saying my father wasn't my father?””

“I'm saying the DNA report suggests Daniel was related to you in a way that doesn't match the family history.””

Caleb stepped closer.

“Then how are you related?””

Lily pointed to the document.

“Daniel's biological father was Graham Whitmore.””

I looked at Dad.

He sat down slowly.

“Graham?””

“The business partner.””

Lily nodded.

“He had a relationship with your mother before she married your father.””

Dad shook his head.

“No.””

“Your grandmother knew. She kept it secret because she was afraid the truth would destroy the family.””

I looked at the photograph of Grandma Eleanor.

Suddenly, the family history seemed like a house built on broken glass.

Dad rubbed his forehead.

“Then why did my mother leave the trust to Daniel's children?””

“Because she believed Daniel deserved to be recognized, even if the family never knew the truth.””

Lily paused.

“And because Graham funded the trust.””

Dad looked up.

“What?””

“Graham put the money into it years ago. He wanted Daniel and his children protected.””

Caleb stared at her.

“So my father wasn't Daniel?””

Lily shook her head.

“Your father was Daniel. But Daniel's father was Graham.””

Caleb looked confused.

“And Marcus?””

Lily turned toward Dad.

“You and Daniel shared the same mother, but not the same father.””

Dad leaned back.

He looked exhausted.

“So my mother knew everything.””

“Yes.””

“And Vanessa knew?””

Lily nodded.

“She discovered the truth while working at the hospital. She used it to manipulate the adoption records and the trust.””

Dad looked at me.

“That's why she wanted Daniel's children separated.””

I nodded slowly.

“But why did she involve my mother?””

Lily took out another envelope.

“This is what I came to give you.””

She handed it to me.

My mother's handwriting was on the front.

*For my daughter, Maya.*

I opened it.

Inside was a letter dated six months before her death.

*My darling girl,*

*If this letter has reached you, then the people who tried to keep our family separated have failed. I need you to know that your father loved you. Daniel loved you. And Marcus loved you in a way that never depended on blood.*

I stopped reading.

Dad's eyes filled.

I continued.

**I made a terrible mistake when I agreed to hide the truth about Lily and Noah. I thought I was protecting you from the damage Vanessa could cause. But I was wrong.

Secrets do not protect children. They only teach them to live with questions nobody will answer.**

My hands shook.

*There is something else I need you to know. Daniel did not die because of a simple accident. He was on his way to meet someone who had promised to give him proof of the stolen trust money. He told me the person he was meeting was Graham Whitmore.*

Lily leaned forward.

I continued.

*Graham had discovered that someone had been using his name to move money from the trust. He was afraid Daniel would be blamed. He wanted to clear his name.*

I looked at Dad.

The letter continued.

*But Graham never arrived at the meeting. Daniel's car crashed before he reached the location.*

I turned the page.

There was another paragraph.

*A week later, Vanessa told me Graham had died. She said he had suffered a heart attack. I never believed her.*

Dad looked at Lily.

“Graham died six months ago?””

Lily nodded.

“That's what everyone was told.””

Dad leaned forward.

“But if he died recently, then who was the man in the photograph?””

Lily looked down.

“That's what I've been trying to find out.””

I continued reading.

*Maya, if you ever meet Graham, ask him about the blue ledger. He will know what you mean. That ledger contains the original records of every payment made from Daniel's trust. It also contains the name of the person who ordered the transfer of Noah.*

I stopped.

Dad took the letter.

“Where is the ledger?””

Lily shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Caleb looked at her.

“Then why didn't you tell anyone?””

“Because I only learned about it last month.””

“How?””

Lily took a deep breath.

“Patricia gave me a key.””

She opened her handbag and placed a small brass key on the table.

It looked old.

A number was engraved on it.

*508.*

Dad examined it.

“What's this for?””

“An old safety deposit box.””

“Where?””

“First National Bank.””

Dad immediately reached for his phone.

But Lily stopped him.

“There's something you need to understand. The box is not in Graham's name.””

“Whose name?””

She looked at me.

“Your mother's.””

I felt a strange chill.

Dad looked at the key.

“Then we go tomorrow.””

Lily shook her head.

“You can't.””

“Why not?””

“Because someone already emptied it.””

Dad stared.

“How do you know?””

“Because Patricia went there yesterday.””

I looked at her.

“What did she find?””

Lily's eyes filled.

“Nothing.””

Dad stood.

“Then the ledger is gone.””

Lily nodded.

“But she found something else.””

She reached into her handbag and removed a bank receipt.

The withdrawal had been made three days earlier.

The name of the person who accessed the box was clearly printed.

*VANESSA REED.*

Dad's expression hardened.

“She has the ledger.””

Lily nodded.

“And she knows you're looking for it.””

Caleb stood abruptly.

“Then we need to find her.””

Dad grabbed his arm.

“No. We let the authorities handle it.””

Caleb shook him off.

“She'll destroy it!””

“Caleb!””

“You don't understand. Mom told me she had a backup plan.””

Dad froze.

“What backup plan?””

Caleb looked at me.

Then he said:

“She told me that if anyone ever found out about the trust, she would transfer the remaining money to an account overseas.””

Lily gasped.

“How much money?””

Caleb swallowed.

“Almost six hundred thousand dollars.””

Dad stared at him.

“Why didn't you tell us this before?””

“Because I thought she was bluffing!””

Dad took out his phone.

He called Evelyn.

She answered immediately.

“Marcus?””

“Vanessa accessed the safety deposit box three days ago. We believe she has the original trust ledger and may be preparing to transfer the remaining funds.””

Evelyn's tone changed.

“Do not contact her. I'll alert the investigators.””

Dad explained everything.

Then Evelyn asked:

“Do you have any idea where Vanessa might go?””

Caleb looked at the floor.

“I do.””

Everyone turned toward him.

“Where?””

Caleb hesitated.

“She has a house outside the city. She bought it before she married Dad.””

Dad frowned.

“Why have I never heard of it?””

“Because it's in another name.””

“What name?””

Caleb swallowed.

“Rebecca Collins.””

Dad went completely still.

“Sky's mother?””

Caleb nodded.

Lily looked horrified.

“Why would Vanessa buy a house under Rebecca's name?””

Caleb's voice broke.

“Because Mom told me she was helping Rebecca financially.””

Dad closed his eyes.

Then Lily said something that made the situation even worse.

“That's impossible.””

Everyone looked at her.

She reached into her bag and pulled out a photograph.

It showed Rebecca standing outside a small house.

Beside her was a young woman holding a baby.

Lily pointed to the woman.

“That's Vanessa.””

Dad stared.

“When was this taken?””

“Seventeen years ago.””

Lily turned the photograph over.

On the back was a handwritten message.

*The children are safe. The money is ready. When Marcus signs, everything will belong to us.*

Dad's face went white.

“Everything?””

Lily nodded.

“Vanessa wasn't just hiding the children.””

She looked at Caleb.

“She was preparing to take the entire inheritance.””

I stared at the photograph.

Then I noticed the date.

October 17.

The night Sky and Noah were born.

But beneath the date was another line.

*And if Marcus refuses, we use Maya.*

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then Dad's phone rang.

It was Evelyn.

He answered immediately.

“What's happened?””

Her voice was urgent.

“Marcus, we have a problem. The investigators just traced Vanessa's last bank transaction.””

Dad gripped the phone.

“To where?””

Evelyn paused.

“St. Mary's Hospital.””

Dad looked confused.

“Why would she send money to a hospital?””

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“Because someone has reopened your mother's medical file.””

I stared at the phone.

“Who?””

Evelyn answered:

“Dr. Stephen Miller.””

Dad's expression hardened.

The same doctor from the photograph.

The doctor who had signed Grandma Eleanor's medication records.

Then Evelyn added:

“And Marcus, he hasn't been missing.””

Dad frowned.

“What?””

“Dr. Miller is currently employed at a private clinic.””

A pause.

“He's been treating Vanessa's mother for the past six months.””

Dad looked at Lily.

Then at Caleb.

Then at me.

And suddenly, I understood.

Vanessa hadn't been running away.

She had been preparing for something.

Something involving the one person who could finally explain what happened to my grandmother.

And if Dr. Miller was still alive, then he might know exactly who had poisoned her.

But he might also know why my mother had been so afraid of Vanessa.

Because the final sentence in my mother's letter had been hidden beneath the folded paper.

I pulled it out.

*Maya, if Vanessa ever returns to the hospital, do not let her near the woman who raised her. She knows what really happened to Daniel, and she knows who ordered your grandmother's death.*

I looked at Dad.

“Who is Vanessa's mother?””

Lily answered quietly.

“Eleanor Reed.””

Dad went completely still.

“That's impossible.””

Lily shook her head.

“No, Marcus. I'm talking about Vanessa's biological mother.””

She paused.

“The woman who is still alive.””

And then she revealed the name.

“Patricia Cole is not Vanessa's sister.””

May you like

She looked at the three of us.

“She's her mother.””
