Chapter 13: The Mother Behind the Lies

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Patricia Cole was Vanessa's mother?

I looked at Lily, waiting for her to smile and tell us she'd made a mistake.

She didn't.

“That's not possible,” Dad said.

“Vanessa told me Patricia was her older sister.””

“That's what everyone was told,” Lily replied.

Caleb shook his head.

“Then why did Patricia raise Noah?””

“Because Patricia was the person Vanessa trusted most,” Lily said.

“She took Noah when he was born. She raised him as her own. And she helped Vanessa hide the truth.””

Dad paced toward the window.

“How old is Patricia?””

“Sixty-one.””

“And Vanessa?””

“Thirty-nine.””

He stopped.

The numbers didn't make sense.

Lily pulled another document from her bag.

“This is a birth registration. Patricia gave birth to Vanessa when she was twenty-two. The father's name was left blank.””

I examined the paper.

There was a familiar signature at the bottom.

Patricia Cole.

“Why would she pretend to be her sister?””

Lily looked at me.

“Because Patricia was married to a man who couldn't have children. She wanted to protect her marriage. Vanessa grew up believing Patricia was her sister, and Patricia's husband believed Vanessa was their niece.””

“Did he know the truth?”” Dad asked.

“No. Not until shortly before he died.””

Caleb sat down heavily.

“So the woman who raised Noah was actually his grandmother?””

“Yes.””

“And Vanessa was his biological aunt?””

Lily nodded.

Dad rubbed his face.

“Then all those years, Patricia was helping Vanessa hide her own family.””

“Not just her family,” Lily said.

“Her mistakes.””

She explained that Patricia had worked in hospital administration before retiring. She had access to birth registrations, patient records, and adoption paperwork. When Vanessa became pregnant with Caleb, Patricia helped arrange the documents that concealed Daniel's identity.

Later, when Rebecca gave birth to Sky and Noah, Patricia helped move Noah into a private guardianship arrangement.

“She told herself she was giving him a stable home,” Lily said.

“But she knew Rebecca hadn't agreed to give him up.””

I thought about Noah.

Ethan Parker.

A young man living forty minutes away, unaware that the people who had shaped his life had been connected to a deception before he could even speak.

“Does he know?”” I asked.

Lily shook her head.

“Not yet.””

Dad picked up his phone.

“Evelyn needs to know about Patricia.””

Before he could dial, his phone rang.

Evelyn.

He answered.

“Marcus, we found Dr. Miller.””

“Where?””

“His clinic. He's agreed to speak with investigators.””

“Does he know about the medical report?””

“Yes. And he has something you need to hear.””

Dad looked at me.

“What?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“He says Eleanor Reed wasn't the only person whose medication was altered.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who else?””

“Your wife.””

Dad went completely still.

“My wife?””

“Maya's mother. The hospital has an archived prescription record showing an unauthorized medication change shortly before her death.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Are you saying Vanessa poisoned my mother too?””

“I'm saying we have reason to investigate. Dr. Miller claims he warned the hospital about irregularities, but his warning was suppressed.””

Dad's voice hardened.

“Who suppressed it?””

“Patricia Cole.””

Lily closed her eyes.

Evelyn continued.

“There's more. Patricia has contacted us. She says she wants to cooperate.””

Dad laughed without humor.

“After all these years?””

“She claims Vanessa has been threatening her.””

Caleb stood.

“Where is Patricia now?””

“At her home. But she refuses to leave until she speaks with Lily.””

Lily looked toward the door.

“I'm going.””

Dad shook his head.

“No. You don't know what she might do.””

“She raised me after my adoptive mother died. Whatever she did, I need to hear it from her.””

Dad looked at me.

I understood.

We had all been living inside other people's decisions.

It was time we heard the truth from the people who made them.

Evelyn arranged for an investigator to accompany us.

Patricia's house stood on a quiet street lined with old trees. The curtains were drawn, and the porch light was on even though it was still afternoon.

When Patricia opened the door, she looked smaller than I remembered.

Her hair was silver.

Her eyes were swollen.

She stared at Lily.

“You came.””

Lily didn't hug her.

“Why did you lie?””

Patricia lowered her head.

“Because I thought I could fix everything.””

“You took Noah from Rebecca.””

“I thought he would be safer.””

“You changed his records.””

“I know.””

“You let me believe my adoptive parents were my biological family.””

Patricia's voice cracked.

“I wanted you to have a normal life.””

Lily stepped inside.

“You don't get to decide what normal means.””

Patricia looked at me.

“Maya, I'm sorry.””

I didn't answer.

Dad stood behind us, his expression unreadable.

“Tell us about Eleanor,” he said.

Patricia flinched.

“I didn't poison her.””

“Did you know someone was changing her medication?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Patricia looked toward the hallway.

“Vanessa.””

Caleb stepped forward.

“Your daughter?””

Patricia closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The word seemed to hurt her.

“She came to me after Daniel died. She said Eleanor had discovered the trust transfers and was going to expose everything. She wanted me to change the medication records so the hospital wouldn't question the prescriptions.””

Dad's voice trembled.

“And you agreed?””

“I was afraid she would expose my identity. My marriage. Everything.””

“You let an old woman die to protect a secret?””

Patricia began crying.

“I didn't know it would kill her.””

I stepped forward.

“Did you know about my mother?””

Patricia looked at me.

“Yes.””

The room seemed to shrink.

“What did Vanessa do?””

Patricia wiped her cheeks.

“She told me your mother had become dangerous. She said she was contacting Daniel's children and planning to reveal the adoption fraud. Vanessa wanted her silenced.””

“Did you help her?””

Patricia didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Dad turned away.

Lily took a step closer.

“Where is Vanessa now?””

Patricia looked frightened.

“She called me this morning.””

“What did she say?””

“She said the blue ledger was no longer safe. She told me she was going to destroy it.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Where?””

Patricia reached into her pocket and took out a small folded note.

“She gave me an address.””

I opened it.

A familiar name was written at the top.

*Whitmore Warehouse.*

Underneath was a time.

*Tonight. 11:30 p.m.*

Dad looked at the investigator.

“We need to call Evelyn.””

Patricia caught his sleeve.

“Wait.””

He turned.

“What now?””

She looked directly at him.

“Vanessa won't be alone.””

“Who will be with her?””

Patricia's lips trembled.

“Graham Whitmore.””

Dad went pale.

“Graham is dead.””

Patricia shook her head.

“No, Marcus. The man who died six months ago was Thomas.””

She swallowed.

“Graham has been alive all this time. Vanessa helped him disappear.””

I stared at the note.

The man who had supposedly died was waiting at the warehouse.

And according to Patricia, he wasn't just the keeper of the blue ledger.

He was the father of Daniel.

The man whose money had built the trust.

The man who might have ordered the crash that killed his own son.

Patricia reached for Lily's hand.

“One more thing,” she whispered.

Lily pulled away.

“What?””

Patricia looked at Dad.

“Graham didn't just want Daniel's children separated.””

Her voice dropped.

“He wanted one of them to disappear permanently.””

Dad's eyes narrowed.

“Which one?””

May you like

Patricia looked at me.

“Maya.””
