Chapter 14: The Blue Ledger

The police refused to let us go to the warehouse without them.

For once, Dad didn't argue.

By eleven, two unmarked vehicles were parked several streets away from the old Whitmore property. Evelyn had arranged surveillance, and an investigator had briefed us on the plan.

We were supposed to stay inside the car.

No exceptions.

Caleb sat beside me, staring at the warehouse through the windshield.

“Do you think he's really alive?”” he asked.

“I don't know.””

“Do you think he killed Daniel?””

I looked toward Dad.

He was speaking quietly with Evelyn.

“I think we're about to find out.””

At 11:27, a black SUV entered the warehouse yard.

Vanessa stepped out.

She wore a dark coat and carried a leather briefcase.

My stepmother looked nothing like the woman who used to make Sunday breakfast and remind Caleb to put on his school uniform.

She looked like someone who had spent years running from a fire she had started.

A second man emerged from the driver's side.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

He moved slowly, but his posture was unmistakable.

Dad leaned forward.

“Graham.””

The man opened the warehouse door.

Vanessa followed him inside.

Evelyn gave the signal.

Officers moved toward the building.

Dad grabbed my wrist.

“Stay here.””

But through the open warehouse windows, we could see movement.

A light flickered on.

Then a shadow crossed the glass.

A moment later, we heard a crash.

Dad opened the car door.

“Marcus!”” Evelyn called.

He ignored her.

I followed him.

Caleb was right behind me.

The warehouse smelled of dust, oil, and damp wood. Police officers were already inside, moving toward a small office at the back.

Vanessa stood beside a metal desk.

Graham was holding a thick blue book.

The ledger.

“Put it down!”” an officer shouted.

Graham turned.

For a second, his eyes met Dad's.

Then he smiled.

“You look just like your mother.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Where were you when Daniel died?””

Graham's smile disappeared.

“Your brother was a difficult man.””

“He was your son.””

Graham looked at him.

“Yes.””

Dad's voice broke.

“And you let him die.””

Graham glanced at Vanessa.

“She told me he'd survive.””

Vanessa stiffened.

“Don't.””

Graham ignored her.

“Daniel was going to destroy everything. The trust. The family.

The business. He had no idea what it would cost.””

“You arranged the crash?”” Dad demanded.

Graham looked down at the ledger.

“I arranged a meeting. Vanessa arranged the rest.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You told me to scare him.””

“I told you to stop him.””

“You said nobody would get hurt!””

Graham laughed.

“People always get hurt when they stand between me and what belongs to me.””

The officers moved closer.

“Both of you, step away from the desk.””

Vanessa looked at Dad.

“Marcus, please.””

He stared at her.

“Don't.””

“I never wanted this.””

“You stole my brother's children from him. You lied about Noah. You helped destroy my mother's medical records.””

“I was trying to protect Caleb!””

Caleb stepped forward.

“From what?””

Vanessa turned.

“My son.””

“Don't call me that.””

Her face crumpled.

“Caleb—”

“You told me Daniel didn't want me. You told me I was nothing to him.””

Vanessa reached toward him.

He stepped back.

“You made me hate a man who was trying to find me.””

Graham slammed the ledger onto the desk.

“Enough.””

He pulled a small envelope from his coat.

“I have something that will end this.””

The officers raised their weapons.

“Don't move!””

Graham held up the envelope.

“It's the original transfer agreement. It proves Marcus signed away his rights to the children.””

Dad stared.

“I never signed anything like that.””

Graham smiled.

“You did. The day after Daniel's funeral.””

Dad looked stunned.

“The funeral paperwork…”

“Your signature is right there.””

Graham opened the envelope.

He held up a document.

At the bottom was Dad's signature.

But there was something wrong.

The signature looked too clean.

Too carefully copied.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Put the document down.””

Graham didn't move.

“You don't understand. This man has spent his entire life believing he was a father. But he signed away every right he ever had.””

Dad looked at the page.

Then at Graham.

“You forged it.””

Graham's expression changed.

“What?””

“My signature. You copied it.””

Graham laughed.

“Prove it.””

Dad looked at Evelyn.

“There's a copy of my actual signature on the original insurance paperwork. I never signed a document with a Schedule A attached.””

Evelyn took the paper.

“We'll verify it.””

Graham's smile faded.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed the blue ledger.

She ran toward the rear exit.

“Vanessa!”” Caleb shouted.

An officer intercepted her.

The ledger fell to the concrete floor.

Its pages scattered.

I saw names, dates, account numbers, and payment records.

Then I noticed one page marked with a red tab.

*MEDICAL EXPENSES — ELEANOR REED.*

I picked it up.

There were several payments to Dr. Stephen Miller.

The dates matched Grandma's final weeks.

Beside each payment was a handwritten code.

*V.R. — APPROVED.*

Vanessa.

My hands shook.

I turned the page.

There was another entry.

A payment to an account in my mother's name.

The date was two days before her final hospitalization.

I looked at the amount.

Twenty-five thousand dollars.

“What is this?”” I whispered.

Evelyn took the page.

Her expression changed.

“It's a payment.””

“To my mother?””

“Possibly.””

Dad approached.

“Why would someone pay her?””

I scanned the page again.

There was a note in the margin.

*FINAL PAYMENT — SILENCE REGARDING DANIEL.*

My stomach turned.

“My mother was paid to keep quiet?””

Graham laughed from across the room.

“Your mother was never as innocent as you believed.””

Dad turned toward him.

“Shut up.””

Graham looked at me.

“She knew Daniel was going to expose us. She took the money and promised to stay away.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“She accepted it.””

“No!””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“That's a lie.””

Everyone turned.

She was standing between two officers.

Her face was pale.

“Your mother never accepted the money. I transferred it into her account without her knowledge.””

Graham stared at her.

“You're protecting her now?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I was trying to make it look as though she had taken a bribe. When she discovered the transfer, she threatened to tell the police.””

Dad's voice was cold.

“Then what happened?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I changed her medication.””

The words seemed to drain all the air from the warehouse.

I couldn't move.

Dad stepped toward her.

“You killed her?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn't mean for her to die.””

“You changed her medication.””

“I thought it would make her sick. I thought she'd be too weak to go to the police.””

“And Eleanor?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“I didn't know how much Dr. Miller had given her.””

Evelyn signaled to the officers.

Vanessa was handcuffed.

Graham was arrested as well.

But as they led him away, he looked back at me.

“You think this is over?””

I didn't answer.

He smiled.

“Ask your father what he did the night Daniel died.””

I turned toward Dad.

His face had gone completely white.

“What is he talking about?””

Dad shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Graham laughed.

“Of course you don't.””

He leaned toward the officer.

“Tell her to ask Marcus why Daniel called him before the crash.””

Then he disappeared through the warehouse doors.

I looked at Dad.

“Did Daniel call you?””

Dad didn't answer.

“Dad?””

He lowered his eyes.

And finally, he whispered:

“Yes.””

I felt my heart sink.

“What did he say?””

Dad looked at the floor.

“He told me he was afraid.””

“Afraid of Graham?””

Dad shook his head.

“No.””

May you like

He looked at me.

“He was afraid of me.””
