Chapter 1: The Guardianship Secret

“WHY IS MY DAUGHTER DRESSED LIKE THIS?!””

David Bennett’s voice tore through the bright living room, startling his eight-year-old daughter so badly that she began crying before he could take another step.

Lily stood beside the cream sofa in a faded cardigan with torn cuffs. Her little shoes were scuffed almost white at the toes, and one lace had been tied into a crooked knot to keep it from dragging across the polished floor.

Across from her, Vanessa, David’s wife, stood beside four luxury shopping bags.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Sunlight poured through the tall foyer windows. The staircase gleamed behind them. A smartphone rested on the coffee table, its screen turned facedown.

Everything looked perfect.

Except David’s daughter.

“Daddy,” Lily whispered.

David dropped his keys.

He crossed the room in three long strides and knelt in front of her.

“Hey, sweetheart. Look at me.”” His voice softened as he brushed a tear from her cheek.

“What happened to your sleeve?””

Lily pulled her arm against her chest.

“Nothing.””

“Baby, your sleeve is coming apart.””

“It’s okay.””

“No, it isn’t.””

David gently touched the frayed fabric. The cuff had been torn for so long that the edges were beginning to curl.

He remembered sending money every month for Lily’s clothes, school supplies, shoes, and anything else she needed while he worked long hours managing his construction company.

He had trusted Vanessa to make sure Lily was comfortable while he was away.

Now, looking at his daughter’s worn clothes, he felt that trust cracking apart.

“I send money for you every month,” David said, slowly turning toward his wife.

Vanessa adjusted the cuff of her elegant cream blouse.

“She has enough clothes.””

David looked at the designer bags beside her. One carried the unmistakable gold lettering of an expensive fashion house. Another contained a pair of shoes in a glossy box.

He pointed at them.

“Then where did her money go?””

Vanessa’s lips parted.

“David, don't start this.””

“I'm asking you a question.””

“And I answered you.””

“No, you didn't.””

Lily wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.

David turned back to her.

“Lily, sweetheart, when was the last time you got new shoes?””

The little girl stared at the floor.

“Daddy, please.””

“Please what?””

“Please don't make her mad.””

Those words stopped him cold.

David studied his daughter's face. She wasn't simply frightened of getting into trouble. She was watching Vanessa the way a child watches someone who has the power to make her day miserable.

He stood slowly.

“Lily, did somebody tell you that you weren't allowed to ask for things?””

Lily's lower lip trembled.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She's eight years old, David. She doesn't understand money. She sees something in a store, and suddenly she thinks she needs it.””

David didn't look away from his daughter.

“Lily, you can tell me the truth.””

For several seconds, the only sound was the quiet hum of the air conditioner.

Then Lily whispered, “She said I wasn't worth new things.””

David turned.

Vanessa's face tightened.

“She's exaggerating.””

“You said that to my daughter?””

“Oh, for heaven's sake. I told her she needed to appreciate what she had.””

“You told an eight-year-old she wasn't worth new clothes?””

“I am not going to stand here and let you twist my words.””

David stepped between Vanessa and Lily.

“Stay away from her.””

Vanessa blinked as though she couldn't believe what she had heard.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

“I'm your wife.””

“And she's my daughter.””

Vanessa's eyes flicked toward the staircase, then toward the coffee table. The movement was quick, but David noticed it.

He had spent years negotiating contracts with people who concealed the most important details in the smallest gestures.

Vanessa was hiding something.

“David,” she said, lowering her voice, “you don't understand what you're walking into.””

“Then explain it.””

She shook her head.

“You never listen to me.””

“I'm listening now.””

“No, you're looking at me like I've committed a crime.””

David glanced at the shopping bags again.

“Where did the money go, Vanessa?””

She folded her arms.

“It's none of your business how I manage this household.””

“Money I send for my child is absolutely my business.””

For the first time, Vanessa's carefully arranged expression slipped. Her nostrils flared, and she gripped the edge of the sofa.

Then she said something that made the entire room feel suddenly unfamiliar.

“She won't even be living here after Friday!””

Lily stopped crying.

David went completely still.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa's hand flew to her mouth.

The silence that followed was worse than the shouting.

David looked from his wife to his daughter. Lily had backed against the sofa, both hands pressed over her mouth.

“Friday?”” he repeated.

“What happens on Friday?””

Vanessa took a step backward.

“I didn't mean—”

“What happens to my daughter on Friday?””

“David, calm down.””

“Answer me!””

The smartphone on the coffee table lit up.

A notification appeared across the screen.

David reached for it.

Vanessa lunged forward.

“Don't touch that phone!””

But he was already holding it.

The screen displayed a document notification with a heading that made his stomach tighten.

*GUARDIANSHIP TRANSFER — APPROVED FOR REVIEW*

Below it sat another line.

*PARENT CONSENT: DAVID BENNETT*

David stared at the words.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“I never signed this.””

Her face drained of color.

Behind him, Lily whispered, “Daddy?””

David tightened his grip on the glowing phone and moved closer to his daughter.

Vanessa stood frozen beside the expensive shopping bags.

May you like

For the first time since he had married her, she looked genuinely terrified.

And David realized that the clothes were only the beginning.
