Chapter 2: The Money That Disappeared
David kept the phone in his hand.
Vanessa stood near the coffee table, her burgundy trousers sharply pressed, her cream blouse immaculate. The sunlight caught the diamond bracelet on her wrist as she reached for the device.
“Give me my phone,” Vanessa said.
David moved it out of her reach.
“Why does this document say I approved a guardianship transfer?””
“It's a preliminary notice.””
“With my name on it.””
“It's not what you think.””
“Then tell me what it is.””
Vanessa glanced toward Lily.
“Can we discuss this without frightening the child?””
David turned his head.
“Lily, sweetheart, come stand beside me.””
She obeyed immediately, clutching the hem of her cardigan. David rested a protective hand on her shoulder.
Vanessa let out an irritated breath.
“See? This is exactly the problem. You make every little thing dramatic.””
David looked at her in disbelief.
“My daughter is standing here in shoes that barely fit, crying because she's afraid of you, and there's a document on your phone that says I'm giving up parental authority. What part of this is little?””
“I never said you were giving up parental authority.””
“Then why does it say guardianship transfer?””
“Because someone has to help with her care.””
“I'm her father.””
“And you're barely here!””
The words struck the room like a slap.
David stared at Vanessa.
She immediately pressed on.
“You leave before Lily wakes up. You come home after dinner. You travel for work.
Someone has to handle her school, her appointments, her clothes. You think sending money means you've done everything?””
For one uncomfortable moment, David had no answer.
He knew his absences had cost him moments he could never recover. He had missed school performances, bedtime stories, and ordinary afternoons when Lily might have needed him.
He had believed providing financial security was how he protected her.
But his daughter was standing beside him, frightened to speak.
And that changed everything.
“I may have worked too much,” he said quietly.
“But I never gave you permission to make my child feel worthless.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Oh, please. She knows how to manipulate you. One tear, and suddenly I'm the villain.””
Lily's fingers tightened around David's shirt.
“I didn't do anything,” she whispered.
David looked down.
“I know, sweetheart.””
Vanessa threw up her hands.
“This is ridiculous.””
David returned his attention to the phone. The notification offered only a brief preview, but there was a reference number and a date. The document had been updated that morning.
He tapped the screen.
Vanessa moved toward him again.
“David, stop.””
“Why?””
“Because you don't understand the legal process.””
“Then explain the legal process.””
She reached for the phone.
He stepped back.
“Don't touch me,” he said.
Vanessa stopped, her expression hardening.
“You're acting like I'm some stranger who walked into this house.””
“Right now, I don't know who you are.””
That silenced her.
David scrolled through the notification. The full document required authentication, but the preview showed a section marked Parent Consent. His name appeared beneath it.
There was a signature field.
He couldn't see the entire signature from the preview.
He didn't need to.
“I never approved this,” he said again.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Maybe you forgot.””
“Forgot what?””
“Signing something.””
“I don't forget signing legal documents concerning my daughter.””
“You sign things all the time, David. You have assistants. You have lawyers. You don't read every piece of paper that comes across your desk.””
He felt a chill move through him.
It was true that his business involved stacks of contracts. His executive assistant sometimes organized routine paperwork, and his attorney handled legal filings.
But nothing involving Lily's guardianship would ever be routine.
“Who prepared this document?”” he asked.
“I don't know.””
“Who submitted it?””
“I said I don't know!””
“You just told me it was a preliminary notice.””
Vanessa looked away.
David took a slow breath.
“Lily, when did you last get new clothes?””
Vanessa made an exasperated sound.
“Can you stop interrogating her?””
David ignored her.
Lily hesitated.
“Before school started.””
“That was months ago.””
“I know.””
“Have you asked Vanessa for anything?””
The little girl nodded.
“What happened?””
Lily stared at her shoes.
“She said we had to save money.””
David's eyes moved toward the shopping bags.
“What about those?””
Lily's shoulders rose.
“She said those were different.””
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
“Because they were different! Those purchases had nothing to do with Lily.””
“Where did the money I sent for Lily go?””
“I paid household expenses.””
“Which expenses?””
“Mortgage. Utilities. Food. Everything.””
David shook his head.
“I paid the mortgage directly. I paid the utilities through the household account. I also sent a separate monthly amount for Lily.””
Vanessa went quiet.
David remembered the arrangement clearly. He had established a dedicated account after Lily's mother died, intending to ensure that his daughter would always have what she needed. Vanessa had agreed to manage day-to-day purchases while he was working.
He opened his banking application.
The screen showed his most recent transfer.
The monthly amount had gone through as scheduled.
He looked at Vanessa.
“If you spent the money on Lily, there should be receipts.””
“I don't keep every receipt.””
“For months?””
“I have other responsibilities!””
“Then show me the account.””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“You have no right to treat me like an employee.””
“This isn't about your pride. It's about my daughter.””
“Your daughter has a roof over her head, doesn't she? She has food. She goes to school. What more do you want?””
David glanced at Lily's torn cuffs.
“I want her to stop being afraid to tell the truth.””
Vanessa laughed once, sharply.
“You think you're some perfect father because you walked in at the right moment?””
“No. I think I have a responsibility to find out what's happening in my home.””
He turned the phone toward himself again.
A second notification appeared.
This one contained a message preview from an unknown number.
*We need confirmation before Friday. Has David been told?*
David read it twice.
Then he raised his eyes.
“Who sent you this?””
Vanessa snatched at the phone again.
“It's private!””
He pulled it away.
“Has someone been planning to take Lily somewhere?””
“No.””
“Then why are they asking whether I've been told?””
“Because you never listen until something becomes a crisis!””
“That doesn't answer my question.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with angry tears, but she didn't cry. Instead, she straightened her blouse and looked directly at him.
“You want the truth? Fine. There are things happening that you know nothing about.””
“Such as?””
She opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
David waited.
Finally, she whispered, “If you keep digging, you might be the reason Lily loses everything.””
Lily gripped his hand.
David looked down at her frightened face, then back at the woman who had just threatened his daughter's future.
He made a decision.
“I'm calling my attorney.””
Vanessa's composure broke.
“No. David, you cannot do that.””
“Watch me.””
He reached for his own phone.
Vanessa stared at him, breathing faster.
May you like
Then she said six words that made him stop before placing the call.
“Your attorney already knows about Friday.””
