Chapter 10: The Truth Angela Left Behind
David read the message again.
Ask your wife what she took from the hospital before Angela died.
For eight years, he had believed he understood the worst night of his life. Angela had died shortly after giving birth to Lily. The doctors had explained the complications, the family had gathered around him, and eventually the world had expected him to continue living.
He had never questioned the details.
Now someone was telling him that a secret had been hidden inside that tragedy.
Michael Harris stood beside him outside the bank.
“David, don't respond to that number yet,” the attorney said.
“Save the message. We'll document it and determine whether it connects to the guardianship scheme.””
David slipped the phone into his pocket.
“I'm going home.””
“Eleanor wants to meet tomorrow morning.””
“I'll be there. But tonight, I need answers from Vanessa.””
He drove home with both hands gripping the steering wheel.
When he entered the bright living room, Lily was sitting on the cream sofa beside Denise. A plate of strawberries rested on the coffee table, and Lily was wearing a clean cardigan Denise had brought from her own house.
David stopped in the doorway.
His daughter looked up.
“Daddy!””
She hurried toward him.
He caught her in his arms, holding her tightly enough to feel her small heartbeat against his chest.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
“Did you find the papers?””
“We found some of them.””
“Are you going to let somebody take me?””
David pulled back so he could look directly into her eyes.
“No. Nobody gets to make decisions about your future behind your back. I'm going to make sure the adults do this properly, and I'll keep you informed.””
Lily searched his face.
“Promise?””
“Promise.””
She wrapped her arms around him again.
David held her until she was ready to let go.
Then he looked toward Vanessa.
She stood near the staircase, wearing the same cream blouse and burgundy trousers she had worn that morning. Her hands were clasped in front of her, and her eyes immediately moved to the phone in his hand.
“What happened?”” she asked.
David waited until Lily returned to Denise.
Then he approached his wife.
“I received a message.””
Vanessa's expression tightened.
“From Marcus?””
“An unknown number.””
He showed her the screen.
She read the words, and the color drained from her face.
David watched her carefully.
“What did you take from the hospital?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
“Vanessa.””
She looked toward Denise.
His mother rose from the sofa.
“I think Lily and I should give you some privacy.””
“No,” David said.
“I want you to hear this too. You've both kept secrets from me. I'm done discovering them one at a time.””
Denise sat back down.
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“Angela gave me something,” she finally whispered.
David felt his chest tighten.
“What?””
“A small envelope.””
“When?””
“The night before she died.””
“Why?””
Vanessa's fingers began twisting around each other.
“She said she needed me to keep it safe. She told me not to give it to anyone unless you asked me about the original guardianship papers.””
David stared at her.
“You had something from Angela for eight years, and you never told me?””
“I was going to.””
“When?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I don't know.””
“What was in the envelope?””
“A flash drive. And a letter.””
Denise covered her mouth.
“Vanessa, you told me you never saw the original documents.””
“I didn't!”” Vanessa snapped.
“I never saw the original agreement. I only had the envelope Angela gave me.””
David stepped closer.
“Where is it?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't have it anymore.””
“Where did you put it?””
“Marcus took it.””
David went completely still.
“When?””
“Last month. He said the contents could prove the guardianship request was necessary. He said he needed to compare Angela's records with the archived documents.””
“And you gave it to him?””
Vanessa nodded, tears running down her cheeks.
“Why?””
“Because he told me Angela had discovered something about the family finances. He said if I helped him establish that you couldn't provide a stable home, Lily would be placed somewhere safe while the investigation continued.””
David stared at her in disbelief.
“You let him convince you that taking my daughter away was the solution to a financial investigation?””
“I thought I could protect her.””
“You knew she was frightened of you. You knew she was going without things she needed. And instead of fixing that, you handed documents about her future to a stranger.””
Vanessa began sobbing.
“I know.””
“No, I don't think you do.””
He turned away, struggling to control his anger.
For years, he had believed Vanessa was simply a difficult stepmother who resented the attention Lily required. He had never imagined that her resentment could become part of a scheme involving forged signatures, hidden documents, and an attempt to transfer his daughter's guardianship.
Yet he could not ignore the fear on Vanessa's face.
She was terrified of Marcus.
And that suggested Marcus had more power over her than she had admitted.
“What was on the flash drive?”” David asked.
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“I never opened it.””
“Did Marcus tell you?””
“He said it contained financial records and a recording. He told me the recording would explain why Angela didn't trust certain people.””
“Which people?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He wouldn't say.””
David took a breath.
“Where did Marcus take the envelope?””
“He said he was keeping it in a secure office.””
“Which office?””
“I don't know.””
David stared at her.
“Vanessa, if you're lying to me again, you need to understand that you're making this worse.””
“I'm not lying. I swear.””
For the first time, he believed she was telling the truth about not knowing where the envelope had gone.
He did not believe that made her trustworthy.
He took out his phone and called Michael.
“Vanessa says Angela left her an envelope containing a flash drive and a letter. Marcus collected it last month. We need to add that to the evidence record.””
Michael asked several questions. David answered as carefully as he could, then ended the call.
Denise rose and approached Vanessa.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.
“Because you would have told David.””
“Yes!””
“And then what? You would have called me selfish, told me I didn't belong in this family, and made sure everyone knew I had failed.””
Denise recoiled.
“You made Lily feel worthless.””
“I know!””
Vanessa's shout filled the living room.
Lily startled on the sofa.
David immediately turned.
“Vanessa, lower your voice.””
She covered her mouth.
Lily stared at her stepmother, trembling.
David crossed the room and knelt beside his daughter.
“It's okay, sweetheart. You're safe.””
“Is she going to be mad at me again?””
David felt his throat tighten.
“No. And if anyone makes you feel frightened, you tell me. You don't have to handle it alone.””
Lily nodded.
Then she looked at Vanessa.
“Did you really say I wasn't worth new things?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
She lowered herself onto her knees several feet away from Lily.
“Yes,” she whispered.
“I said something cruel, and you didn't deserve it.””
Lily remained silent.
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I was angry about things that had nothing to do with you. I took that anger out on you, and that was wrong. I'm sorry.””
Lily looked at David.
He didn't tell her to forgive Vanessa.
He didn't tell her to hug her stepmother.
He simply stayed beside her, allowing her to decide what she wanted to say.
Finally, Lily whispered, “I just wanted shoes that didn't hurt.””
Vanessa began crying harder.
David looked away.
That small sentence explained more about the damage than any argument could.
Later that evening, after Lily had gone upstairs, David sat at the coffee table with his attorney on speakerphone. Denise remained in the armchair, and Vanessa sat at the far end of the sofa.
Michael confirmed that Eleanor Price would meet them the following morning with the original file and the witness statement.
He also explained that the new information about Angela's envelope would be documented as part of the ongoing review.
“No one should attempt to retrieve the missing materials privately,” Michael said.
“If Marcus contacts any of you, preserve the communication. Do not agree to meet him without appropriate safeguards.””
David agreed.
When the call ended, Vanessa stood.
“I need to tell you something else.””
David looked up.
“Go ahead.””
“Marcus didn't approach me first.””
“Who did?””
Vanessa glanced at Denise.
“Your father.””
The room fell silent.
David rose slowly.
“My father was dead when Marcus began contacting you.””
“I know.””
“Then explain what you mean.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Marcus told me your father had arranged for someone to contact me if Angela's letter ever resurfaced. He said your father wanted to make sure Lily remained with someone who could protect the family.””
David felt his anger return.
“My father died eight years ago. Are you telling me Marcus was acting on instructions from a dead man?””
“No. I'm telling you Marcus claimed that was why he had access to the records.””
Denise stood abruptly.
“That's a lie. Robert would never have authorized this.””
“How do you know?”” David asked.
“Because he specifically told me that no one could use the old agreement to remove Lily from your care.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
Denise's face crumpled.
“Because I thought the matter was finished. I thought if I kept the records hidden, nobody could hurt her.””
David looked from his mother to his wife.
Both had claimed to protect Lily.
Both had concealed information.
And both had allowed someone else to manipulate their fear.
He walked toward the staircase and looked up at the landing where Lily's small shoes sat beside his larger ones.
For the first time in years, he understood that protecting his daughter required more than money, more than promises, and more than trusting the people who claimed to love her.
It required the truth.
The next morning, he would meet Eleanor Price.
He would find out what Angela had tried to preserve.
And he would learn why someone had spent years keeping the original documents hidden.
But as he reached for the light switch, his phone vibrated once more.
Another message from the unknown number.
*Marcus is not the person who ordered the transfer. Ask Eleanor who paid for the original agreement.*
David stared at the screen.
Then he looked at the open envelope on the coffee table, Angela's photograph lying beside it.
Someone had been manipulating the entire family.
Someone had known about the original agreement before Angela died.
And whoever had ordered the new transfer was still watching them.
David slipped the phone into his pocket.
May you like
Tomorrow, he would finally learn the name.
And this time, he would make sure the truth could not be buried again.
