Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Message
“Who is Marcus Reed?””
David asked the question again, this time without raising his voice.
Somehow, that made it worse.
Vanessa stood beside the cream sofa, staring at the smartphone on the coffee table. The designer shopping bags remained scattered around her feet, their glossy surfaces reflecting the bright afternoon sunlight. Lily sat with her knees pressed together, watching the adults as if one wrong movement might make everything fall apart.
Vanessa swallowed.
“Marcus is a consultant.””
David stared at her.
“A consultant who sends you messages about transferring my daughter’s guardianship?””
“He handles family matters.””
“What family matters?””
“David, please.””
“No. You don't get to ask me for patience after I discover a forged signature with my name on it.””
Vanessa flinched at the word forged.
David noticed.
He picked up the phone from the table and read the message again.
The transfer must be completed by Friday, or she'll tell David everything.
He turned the screen toward Vanessa.
“What is Lily supposed to tell me?””
“I don't know.””
“Then why does Marcus seem to know?””
Vanessa folded her arms so tightly that her fingers disappeared beneath her elbows.
“Maybe he was talking about something else.””
“Something else involving my daughter's guardianship?””
She said nothing.
David took a slow breath, fighting the urge to shout. Lily had already endured enough fear in this room. He wasn't going to make her feel trapped between two adults screaming at each other.
He crouched beside her.
“Lily, sweetheart, can you tell me a little more about the paper you practiced on?””
Lily glanced at Vanessa.
David gently took her hand.
“You're not in trouble. I promise.””
“She said it was for school,” Lily whispered.
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“I told you she misunderstood!””
David stood.
“Let her finish.””
Lily continued, her voice barely audible.
“Vanessa said I had to practice writing your name because there would be an important meeting. She said if I did it right, everyone would stop being angry.””
David's stomach tightened.
“Who would stop being angry, baby?””
“I don't know.””
“Did anyone else come here?””
Lily nodded.
“A man.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
David looked at his daughter.
“What did he look like?””
“He wore a gray suit. He had a little scar near his eyebrow.”” Lily touched the skin above her own eye.
“He asked me if I wanted to live somewhere else.””
David felt something cold settle in his chest.
“What did you tell him?””
“I said I wanted to live with you.””
Lily's eyes filled.
“He said I didn't get to decide.””
David pulled her into his arms.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he looked over Lily's shoulder at Vanessa.
“Someone came into my home and told my daughter she couldn't choose where she lived?””
Vanessa shook her head frantically.
“That's not how it happened.””
“Then tell me how it happened.””
“He was asking questions. That's all.””
“What questions?””
“Whether Lily was happy. Whether she was being cared for. Whether you were home enough.””
David stared at her.
“Was this man investigating me?””
“I don't know!””
“Did you invite him here?””
Vanessa hesitated.
That hesitation answered more than her words could have.
David took out his phone and called his attorney again.
“I need you to preserve the guardianship document and identify Marcus Reed. He may have visited my house. He reportedly questioned my daughter about where she wanted to live.””
He listened, then added, “No, I have not authorized any transfer. And I want all communication preserved.””
When he ended the call, Vanessa was pacing beside the staircase.
“You're making a terrible mistake,” she said.
“That's what people keep telling me whenever I ask a question.””
“You don't understand how complicated this is.””
“Then simplify it.””
She stopped pacing.
“You want the truth? Fine. Marcus said there were concerns about Lily's home environment. He said a temporary guardianship arrangement could protect everyone until those concerns were resolved.””
David stared at her.
“What concerns?””
“That you were never home. That Lily was being neglected.””
For one moment, David couldn't find his voice.
Then he looked at Lily's torn cardigan.
“Who was neglecting her, Vanessa?””
Her face reddened.
“Don't do that.””
“Do what?””
“Make this about her clothes.””
“Her clothes are part of it. Her fear is part of it. Someone trying to remove her from her father is part of it.””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“You think money solves everything. You send transfers and assume everything is fine. You don't know what happens in this house when you're gone.””
David's expression hardened.
“You're right about one thing. I didn't know what was happening. I trusted you.””
She looked away.
“And I am responsible for that mistake,” he continued.
“But it ends today.””
Vanessa's eyes snapped back to his.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Lily stays with me. It means nobody takes her anywhere without my knowledge. And it means we're going to find out who submitted that document.””
“You can't just decide that.””
“I'm her father.””
“And I'm her stepmother!””
“You're not entitled to frighten her into silence.””
Lily reached for David's hand.
He squeezed it gently.
Then his phone vibrated.
An email from his attorney had arrived.
The subject line read: *URGENT — DOCUMENT SOURCE IDENTIFIED.*
David opened it.
His attorney had traced the submission to an online account associated with a private family-services firm. The initial request had been filed several weeks earlier, before the document appeared on Vanessa's phone.
One name appeared in the attached correspondence.
Marcus Reed.
But it wasn't the name beneath the authorization field.
David scrolled down.
A second name was listed as the person who had requested the review.
He read it once.
Then again.
*Denise Bennett.*
David's mother.
The woman who had held Lily in the hospital after her birth. The woman who had promised him, at his wife's funeral, that their family would always protect his daughter.
Behind him, Vanessa whispered, “Oh, God.””
David slowly turned.
“You knew my mother was involved?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't know she had submitted the original request.””
“Then what did you know?””
She looked toward Lily.
And this time, when she spoke, her voice was almost inaudible.
“Your mother believes Lily shouldn't be living with you.””
David stared at her.
Before he could respond, another message appeared on the phone.
It was from Denise.
*Bring Lily to my house tomorrow. We need to discuss what your wife has done.*
David looked at his daughter, who was watching him with frightened, questioning eyes.
Then he typed a reply.
*No one is taking Lily anywhere until I know the truth.*
He pressed send.
The response arrived almost immediately.
*Then you need to hear what happened the night Lily's mother died.*
David stopped breathing.
May you like
Because his mother had promised him she would never speak of that night again.
And now, somehow, it was connected to everything.
