Chapter 11: The Room Behind the Walls

Richard’s confidence was gone.

Only for a second.

But Marcus saw it.

I saw it.

Everyone saw it.

The man who had walked into the mansion like he controlled the ending suddenly looked like someone who had just realized there was another player in the game.

Marcus held the phone tightly.

“Why did you react like that?””

Richard said nothing.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You know something.””

Richard adjusted his sleeve.

“Someone is trying to confuse you.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

He pointed around the room.

“Everyone says I’m confused whenever I get close to the truth.””

His eyes locked on Richard.

“I’m not confused anymore.””

Richard stared at him.

“You think you’re strong because you found a few papers?””

Marcus answered immediately.

“No.””

He looked at his mother.

“I think I’m strong because I survived twenty years without knowing the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

His mother wiped her eyes.

Marcus turned toward her.

“I’m still angry.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“But I’m listening.””

Those words meant more than forgiveness.

They meant there was still a chance.

His mother walked closer.

“Your grandmother knew Richard would come after the property.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then why didn’t she stop him?””

“She tried.””

“How?””

She looked around the mansion.

“By hiding the original contract.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Where?””

His mother glanced at the walls.

Nobody moved.

Then Noah spoke.

“The house is hiding something?””

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed toward the hallway.

“There’s a door there.””

Marcus followed his finger.

A small wooden door was partially hidden behind a large painting.

I had seen it before.

But never opened.

Marcus walked toward it.

Richard immediately said:

“Don’t.””

The entire room stopped.

Marcus slowly turned.

“Why?””

Richard said nothing.

“Why shouldn’t I open a door in my own house?””

Richard’s face tightened.

Because that was the first time Marcus had called it his.

His house.

Marcus removed the painting.

Behind it was an old lock.

Vanessa whispered:

“I thought it was sealed.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew?””

She looked away.

Again.

Another secret.

Marcus tried the handle.

Locked.

Richard stepped forward.

“This ends here.””

Marcus looked at him.

“No.””

He turned the lock.

Nothing.

Then I remembered something.

A small key.

Something his mother had given me years ago.

I reached into my pocket.

Marcus looked surprised.

“You had a key?””

I nodded.

“Your mother gave it to me.””

His expression changed.

“You’ve been carrying it all this time?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I looked at the door.

“Because I was waiting for you to be ready.””

Marcus stared.

Then he took the key.

Slowly.

He inserted it.

The lock clicked.

Richard moved forward.

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Dad.””

Everyone heard it.

The fear in her voice.

Not anger.

Fear.

Marcus opened the door.

Inside was a small hidden room.

No furniture.

No decorations.

Only boxes.

Hundreds of documents.

Old photographs.

And one large envelope sitting in the center.

Marcus walked inside.

His mother followed.

She stopped when she saw it.

“He found it.””

Marcus looked back.

“Who?””

She whispered:

“Your grandfather.””

Richard went pale.

Marcus noticed.

“What?””

His mother looked at him.

“This room wasn’t created by my family.””

She pointed toward Richard.

“It was created by his.””

Marcus looked confused.

Richard finally spoke.

“Your grandmother stole information from my father.””

Marcus stared.

“What information?””

Richard said nothing.

Marcus opened the envelope.

Inside was a document.

The first page had one sentence.

His face changed.

“What does it say?””

He looked at me.

Then at his mother.

Then at Richard.

“It says this house was never just property.””

He turned the page.

“It was evidence.””

Richard stepped forward.

“No.””

Marcus continued reading.

“It says my grandmother discovered financial crimes connected to…”

He stopped.

His eyes moved toward Richard.

“Your family.””

The room went silent.

Richard’s expression changed.

“You don’t understand.””

Marcus held up the document.

“I understand enough.””

Richard’s voice became dangerous.

“Give me that.””

Marcus stepped back.

“No.””

Richard moved closer.

And then Vanessa did something nobody expected.

She stepped between them.

“Don’t.””

Richard looked at his daughter.

“You’re protecting him?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Marcus.

“I’m protecting the truth.””

Richard stared at her.

Then smiled.

A cold smile.

“You really think this makes you innocent?””

Vanessa froze.

Marcus looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Richard reached into his pocket.

Pulled out his phone.

And pressed play.

A recording began.

Vanessa’s voice came through.

Clear.

Recent.

“Marcus can never know what happened that night.””

Marcus’s face went blank.

Vanessa looked horrified.

“No.””

Richard smiled.

“Now he knows.””

The recording continued.

And then Marcus heard the words that changed everything.

His wife’s voice said:

“I was there when his mother disappeared.””
