Chapter 13: The Brother Who Was Buried Twice

Marcus stared at the message.

Three words.

Sixteen letters.

But somehow they carried more weight than every document, every recording, and every secret hidden inside the mansion.

I KNOW EVERYTHING.

Nobody spoke.

The phone screen glowed in Marcus’s hand.

Then Richard moved.

For the first time since he entered the room, he looked truly afraid.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Afraid.

Marcus noticed.

“Who is he?””

Richard didn’t answer.

“Who is your brother?””

Richard looked toward the window.

The sunlight reflected against the glass, but his face had gone cold.

“My brother’s name was Daniel.””

Marcus waited.

“What happened to him?””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“He died.””

His mother stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

She shook her head slowly.

“He didn’t.””

Richard looked at her.

“You don’t know that.””

“I know because I saw him.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked between them.

“You saw him?””

His mother nodded.

“The night I disappeared.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Tell me everything.””

His mother looked at the hidden room.

At the documents.

At the family secrets that had been buried for decades.

Then she finally spoke.

“Your grandmother discovered that Richard wasn’t working alone.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t.””

She ignored him.

“Daniel was involved.””

Marcus frowned.

“His brother?””

“Yes.””

She looked at Richard.

“But Daniel wanted out.””

Richard laughed.

A cold, bitter laugh.

“You believe that?””

“I know that.””

“How?””

His mother took a breath.

“Because Daniel helped me escape.””

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked confused.

“Escape from what?””

She looked at him.

“From being erased.””

The words were heavy.

Marcus shook his head.

“I don’t understand.””

His mother stepped closer.

“Your grandmother had proof. Proof that Richard and Daniel had been moving money through fake companies. Proof that they were trying to gain control of properties belonging to other families.””

Marcus looked at the documents.

“And this house?””

“Was the last one.””

Richard interrupted.

“You’re making me sound like a monster.””

Marcus turned.

“You lied about my mother being dead.””

Richard said nothing.

“That’s enough.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“You think I had a choice?””

Marcus stared.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Richard stepped closer.

“Your mother was going to destroy everything.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She was going to expose you.””

Richard’s silence confirmed it.

Then the mansion lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked up.

Once.

Twice.

Then the power went out.

The room fell dark.

Noah grabbed my hand.

“Grandpa?””

“I’m here.””

A sound came from somewhere upstairs.

A door opening.

Marcus immediately turned.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

Richard looked toward the hallway.

“Daniel.””

The name left his mouth like a warning.

A flashlight turned on.

A figure appeared at the top of the stairs.

Everyone froze.

The man slowly walked down.

Older than Richard.

Tired.

But alive.

Marcus stared.

“No.””

The man stopped.

His eyes moved toward Richard.

Then toward the documents.

Then toward Marcus.

“I’m sorry it took so long.””

Marcus couldn’t speak.

Richard looked furious.

“You should be dead.””

The man smiled sadly.

“I know.””

The room remained silent.

Marcus looked at his mother.

Then at Richard.

Then at the man.

“Daniel?””

The man nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped back.

“How?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Because your uncle tried to make sure nobody knew I survived.””

The word uncle echoed.

Marcus froze.

“Uncle?””

Richard looked away.

Daniel continued.

“Your mother was the only reason I lived.””

Marcus looked at his mother.

She nodded.

“He helped me escape.””

Richard’s voice became sharp.

“And then he betrayed me.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“You betrayed everyone.””

Richard laughed.

“You think you’re the hero?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“I think the truth is finally here.””

Marcus stared.

“Why now?””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“Because the original contract wasn’t the only thing hidden.””

He reached into his coat.

Pulled out a small envelope.

Marcus looked at it.

“What is that?””

Daniel handed it to him.

“Your grandmother’s final statement.””

Marcus took it.

His fingers shook.

Daniel continued:

“She knew someone would try to rewrite history.””

Marcus opened the envelope.

Inside was one page.

One sentence was written at the top.

His eyes widened.

“What?””

His mother stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Marcus looked up.

“It says…”

He swallowed.

“It says the true owner of this mansion was never my mother.””

Everyone went still.

Richard smiled.

“Finally.””

Marcus looked back down.

“It says the property belongs to…”

He stopped.

His face changed.

“Me.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard’s smile disappeared.

Marcus looked confused.

“But why?””

Daniel answered.

“Because your grandmother knew you were the only person Richard couldn’t control.””

Richard suddenly stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

Marcus moved back.

“No.””

Richard’s face changed.

Something darker appeared.

“Marcus.””

The tone was different.

Not a warning.

A threat.

And everyone in the room understood.

May you like

The truth had finally come out.

But Richard was not finished fighting for it.
