Chapter 7: The Letter Hidden for Twenty Years

Marcus didn’t move.

Neither did Vanessa.

For a moment, the entire mansion seemed frozen around that one sentence.

“You’ll find out what I did.””

Those five words changed the way Marcus looked at his wife.

Not like a husband.

Not like a man trying to understand someone he loved.

Like a stranger seeing a locked door for the first time.

“What did you do?”” he asked.

Vanessa looked away.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

That made it worse.

“No more excuses. No more saying you were protecting me. No more telling me I don’t understand.””

He pointed at the envelope on the table.

“My entire life is sitting in front of me, and you’re standing here trying to stop me from opening it.””

Vanessa’s lips parted.

“I was trying to protect our family.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Our family?””

He looked at Noah.

Then back at her.

“You broke my son’s gift because you hated my father being here. You lied about this house. You hid my mother from me.””

His voice cracked.

“And you’re calling that protecting us?””

Vanessa flinched.

Calvin watched silently.

I knew that silence.

It was the silence of someone who had waited years for this moment.

Marcus reached for the envelope.

This time, nobody stopped him.

The paper was old.

Yellowed around the edges.

The handwriting on the front made his fingers freeze.

Because it wasn’t just his mother’s name.

It was his mother’s handwriting.

“Marcus.””

He whispered the name she had written.

His eyes filled.

For a second, he wasn’t a grown man standing in a mansion.

He was a little boy waiting by the front door for his mother to come home.

I remembered that boy.

The one who refused to sleep because he believed she would return after he closed his eyes.

Marcus opened the letter.

The room stayed silent.

He read the first line.

Then another.

Then another.

His face changed with every sentence.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer immediately.

His eyes stayed on the paper.

Finally, he whispered:

“She knew.””

Nobody moved.

“She knew Vanessa was lying.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus continued reading.

“She wrote that someone was trying to take control of the property.””

Calvin nodded.

Marcus looked at him.

“You knew about this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Calvin looked down.

“Because your mother asked me not to.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Everyone had promises with my mother except me.””

The pain in his voice was impossible to ignore.

He continued reading.

Then suddenly he stopped.

“What?””

I saw his hand tighten.

“Marcus?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“She wrote your name.””

Vanessa went still.

“My name?””

Marcus nodded.

“She said if anything happened to her…”

He swallowed.

“She said you would try to convince me she was gone forever.””

Vanessa’s face became pale.

“That’s not what happened.””

Marcus looked back at the letter.

“She said you would say I was unstable. That I was grieving. That I needed to move on.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Marcus, listen.””

“No.””

He kept reading.

“She said you would use my pain against me.””

The room became silent.

Even Noah stopped moving.

Vanessa’s voice became softer.

“Marcus, I loved you.””

He looked at her.

“Did you?””

The question hurt.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was honest.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t know everything.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked at Calvin.

Then at me.

Then at the letter.

“I can’t.””

Marcus stared.

“You can’t?””

Her voice dropped.

“Not without explaining why.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not here.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“No. Here.””

He pointed around the room.

“This house. This room. This is where you lied to me.””

Vanessa looked defeated for the first time.

Calvin spoke.

“She wasn’t alone.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Calvin hesitated.

Then he reached into his coat again.

This time, he pulled out a small flash drive.

“Your mother left evidence.””

Marcus looked at it.

“Evidence of what?””

Calvin looked directly at Vanessa.

“Of the people who wanted her gone.””

The room went quiet.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“You found it.””

Calvin nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What is on that?””

Calvin placed the drive beside the letter.

“Everything your mother discovered.””

Marcus picked it up.

“And why are you giving this to me now?””

Calvin looked toward the windows.

“The person who helped hide the truth is still in this house.””

Everyone became still.

Marcus slowly turned.

“Who?””

Calvin didn’t answer.

He looked at Vanessa.

And Vanessa whispered:

“You promised you would never tell him.””

Calvin’s expression hardened.

“I promised your mother I would tell him when the time came.””

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“What did you promise?””

Before she could answer, Noah suddenly spoke.

“Dad.””

Everyone looked at him.

The little boy was staring at the front window.

“There’s someone outside.””

Marcus turned.

A black car sat at the end of the driveway.

Nobody had noticed it arriving.

Calvin’s face changed.

And for the first time, he looked afraid.

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Who is it?””

Calvin didn’t answer.

May you like

Because the car door opened.

And the person stepping out was someone none of them expected.
