Chapter 12: The Night Everyone Lied

Nobody spoke after the recording ended.

The silence felt impossible.

Like the whole mansion was waiting for someone to explain what had just happened.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

But he didn’t see his wife.

Not anymore.

He saw every unanswered question.

Every strange phone call.

Every time she changed the subject.

Every time she told him to trust her.

“I was there.””

His voice was barely audible.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

He stepped back.

“Don’t.””

She stopped.

“I can explain.””

He laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“Everyone always says that.””

His eyes moved toward the recording device.

“You were there.””

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

Marcus shook his head.

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because I was trying to stop it.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t.””

Marcus turned away.

I had seen my son angry.

I had seen him hurt.

But this was different.

This was grief.

He wasn’t losing his mother.

He was losing the person he thought had loved him.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I made mistakes.””

Marcus turned.

“Your mistakes almost destroyed my family.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

His voice rose.

“Do you know what it feels like to believe your mother chose to leave you?””

Vanessa cried silently.

“I know.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You don’t.””

His mother stepped forward.

“Marcus.””

He looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words changed him.

Not enough.

Not yet.

But enough to listen.

She continued.

“I should have found a way back to you.””

“You were afraid.””

“Yes.””

“Of him?””

She looked at Richard.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at Richard.

“Why?””

Richard smiled.

“Because your mother found out things that powerful people don’t want discovered.””

Marcus held up the document.

“The crimes?””

Richard’s expression darkened.

“You have no idea what you’re holding.””

Marcus looked down.

“Then tell me.””

Richard laughed.

“You think truth is simple?””

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“I think you’re afraid.””

That angered him.

“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Actually, I do.””

He pointed toward the hidden room.

“You’re a man who spent twenty years hiding from a woman you couldn’t silence.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“You’re exactly like your father.””

Marcus looked at me.

“What does he mean?””

I stayed quiet.

Richard smiled.

“Ask him.””

Marcus turned.

“Dad?””

I took a breath.

“There’s more.””

His expression changed.

“More?””

I nodded.

“Your mother didn’t disappear because she was running away.””

His mother looked at me.

“Arthur…”

“I have to tell him.””

Marcus waited.

“She disappeared because she was trying to protect you.””

Marcus frowned.

“From what?””

I looked at Richard.

“From becoming part of the same system he was fighting.””

Richard laughed.

“You make yourself sound like a hero.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I looked at Marcus.

“I made mistakes too.””

My son stared at me.

“What mistake?””

I answered honestly.

“I trusted the wrong people.””

The room became quiet.

Then Marcus’s phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

Everyone watched as he opened it.

One picture.

A photograph of a woman.

His mother.

Standing outside the mansion.

The date was recent.

Marcus looked confused.

“That was taken today.””

His mother stepped closer.

“What?””

He showed her.

She stared.

Then whispered:

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

She touched the screen.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

Her face changed.

Because she recognized something behind her.

Not the house.

Not the street.

Something else.

A person.

Marcus zoomed in.

Everyone leaned closer.

And then they saw it.

A man standing in the background.

Watching.

Waiting.

Richard’s face went pale.

Because he recognized him.

Marcus looked at him.

“Who is that?””

Richard didn’t answer.

“Who?””

Finally, Richard whispered:

“That’s my brother.””

Nobody moved.

Marcus frowned.

“You never told me you had a brother.””

Richard looked toward the window.

His voice became low.

“Because he was supposed to be dead.””

The phone buzzed again.

Another message.

Only three words.

Marcus opened it.

May you like

And everyone saw the message.

*I KNOW EVERYTHING.*
