Chapter 2: The Paper Nobody Was Supposed to See

For several seconds, Marcus couldn't hear the guests around him.

He could see their faces, though.

A woman near the pool lowered her champagne glass. The man in the cream suit stopped whispering. Two catering workers stood motionless beside a silver tray of untouched desserts.

Everyone was watching him read the document.

Officer Reed waited patiently.

Marcus held the paper by its edges, careful not to crease it. His signature appeared beneath a line of formal wording, followed by a date from three weeks earlier.

He remembered that date.

He had spent the entire afternoon at his company's headquarters, attending a meeting about a new construction contract. His assistant had scheduled the meeting months in advance. His calendar still contained the invitation.

He hadn't signed anything at Vanessa's request.

He hadn't signed anything for Vanessa at all.

"Officer Reed," Marcus said, keeping his voice steady, "what exactly is this document?""

"I can explain the general reason for my visit," Reed replied.

"But first, I need to establish whether you recognize the signature.""

"I don't.""

"Have you authorized anyone to sign documents on your behalf?""

"No.""

"Not your wife? Not a financial representative? Not an attorney?""

Marcus's gaze flicked toward Vanessa.

"Not anyone.""

Vanessa abruptly set her champagne glass on a nearby table.

"This is ridiculous.""

Officer Reed turned toward her.

"Ma'am, I'll need you to let us finish.""

"I'm simply saying this is a family matter.""

"That doesn't change the questions I'm asking.""

Vanessa gave a brittle laugh.

"You've walked into a private birthday celebration and started questioning my husband in front of our guests. Surely there's a more appropriate way to handle this.""

Reed remained composed.

"Mr. Carter was asked to identify a signature. He has answered. I haven't accused anyone of anything.""

Marcus looked down at the document again.

"Then why are you here?""

"Because the document was submitted to an office that requires verification of the authorization. There are discrepancies that need to be clarified.""

"What kind of discrepancies?""

"That's part of what we're investigating.""

Vanessa's face had lost some of its color.

Marcus noticed her right hand moving toward the side seam of her gown. She pressed her fingers against the fabric, then forced them still.

He knew that gesture.

Whenever Vanessa was hiding something, she touched the same spot near her hip.

"Vanessa," he said quietly, "what is this?""

She looked at him as if he had betrayed her.

"How would I know?""

"You were perfectly calm until he showed up.""

"Because this is humiliating!""

"No. You were calm when Zoe was standing here crying. You were calm when you ordered her to serve drinks at her own party. But now you're frightened by a piece of paper.""

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"I'm not frightened.""

"Then look at it.""

He extended the document toward her.

She didn't take it.

"Vanessa.""

"I said I don't need to see it.""

Officer Reed's expression changed slightly.

Not enough to suggest a conclusion, but enough for Marcus to notice.

"Ma'am," Reed said, "have you seen this document before?""

"No.""

The answer came too fast.

Zoe stepped out from behind Marcus.

"That's not true.""

Vanessa whipped around.

"What did you say?""

Zoe's shoulders rose toward her ears. She glanced at Marcus, then at the officer.

"I said that's not true.""

Marcus turned to his daughter.

"Baby, what do you mean?""

Zoe rubbed her palms against the stained apron.

"I saw papers like that in the upstairs office.""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"You have no business going through my things.""

"I wasn't going through anything!""

"You were told to stay out of that room.""

"I went in because you asked me to bring you your phone!""

The guests had stopped pretending not to listen.

Marcus held up a hand.

"Zoe, slow down. Tell me what you saw.""

His daughter took a shaky breath.

"Three weeks ago, Vanessa was on the phone. She was in the office, and I heard her say your name. When I walked in, she covered a stack of papers with a folder.""

"What did she say?""

"She told me to leave.""

Vanessa shook her head in disbelief.

"She's twisting a completely ordinary conversation into something sinister.""

Zoe's tears spilled again.

"You told me that if I ever mentioned those papers, you'd tell Daddy I stole your jewelry.""

A murmur passed through the crowd.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

"Did you threaten my daughter?""

"I was trying to discipline her!""

"By threatening to accuse her of a crime?""

"She was snooping!""

"I was bringing your phone!"" Zoe shouted.

Her voice cracked across the lawn.

For the first time, Vanessa had no immediate response.

Officer Reed took a small notebook from his pocket.

"Zoe, can you tell me whether you saw your father's signature on those papers?""

Zoe hesitated.

"I don't know. I saw his name.""

"Was there anything else you remember?""

She looked toward the glass doors.

"The papers were inside a blue folder. Vanessa put it in the bottom drawer of the desk. Then she locked the drawer.""

Marcus's stomach tightened.

He had seen that folder before.

Not in Vanessa's office.

In the home study he rarely used, where he kept the documents for his business and the records he had inherited from his late father.

He had assumed Vanessa was helping organize the house.

Now he wondered what else she had moved.

"Officer," Marcus said, "I want to cooperate fully. But I need to know whether this document has anything to do with my property or my accounts.""

Reed paused.

"I can't disclose every detail of an ongoing inquiry here. I can tell you that the authorization appears to have been used in connection with a significant financial transaction.""

Marcus's grip tightened around the paper.

"What transaction?""

"That will need to be verified with the relevant records.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Marcus, please. Don't let this get out of hand.""

He turned toward her slowly.

"You said you didn't know anything about it.""

"I don't!""

"Then why are you asking me to stop?""

"Because you're making a spectacle of yourself!""

Marcus almost laughed.

He looked at the guests, at the untouched food, at the extravagant decorations hanging above the lawn.

Then he looked at Zoe's stained apron.

"Vanessa, my daughter has been standing here in tears while you made her serve your guests. You told her she didn't deserve the dress I bought her. You threatened her into silence. Now a police officer is holding a document with my forged signature, and you're worried about a spectacle?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with fury.

"You don't know what I've had to deal with.""

"Then tell me.""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Officer Reed gently took the document back and placed it inside his folder.

"Mr. Carter, I may need a formal statement from you. For now, please don't alter or discard any records that might relate to this matter.""

"I won't.""

"And if you find any documents that appear connected, contact me before moving them.""

Marcus nodded.

Reed gave him a card.

Then he looked at Zoe.

"Are you all right, young lady?""

Zoe stared at the grass.

"No, sir.""

The honesty in her answer silenced the remaining whispers.

Reed softened his voice.

"Is there someone you trust who can stay with you?""

"My dad.""

"All right.""

Marcus put an arm around his daughter.

Vanessa watched them, her mouth set in a hard line.

As Officer Reed began walking toward the gate, Marcus glanced once more at the document folder.

"Officer?""

Reed stopped.

"Yes?""

"One more question. If someone used my signature without permission, would that person have needed access to my personal records?""

"Possibly. It depends on how the document was prepared and submitted.""

Marcus nodded slowly.

He didn't need to ask who had access to his house.

He already knew.

Vanessa took another step toward the glass doors.

Marcus noticed.

"Where are you going?""

She stopped.

"Inside.""

"Why?""

"Because I need a moment.""

He looked at the guests, then at the woman he had trusted to protect his family.

"You've had plenty of moments.""

Vanessa's nostrils flared.

"You have no idea what you're accusing me of.""

"I'm not accusing you of anything yet.""

The word yet made her blink.

Marcus took Zoe's serving apron by its stained edge and helped her untie it. She held the fabric in her hands, staring at it as though it represented something she couldn't explain.

Then she whispered, "Daddy, there's something else.""

He bent toward her.

"What is it?""

Zoe glanced at Vanessa.

"Last night, I heard her talking to someone on the phone. She said the papers were ready. She said you wouldn't find out until it was too late.""

Marcus felt the afternoon shift beneath his feet.

"Did she say who she was talking to?""

Zoe nodded.

"I saw the name on her phone when she put it on the desk.""

"Whose name?""

Her answer came in a whisper.

"Uncle Daniel.""

Marcus froze.

May you like

Daniel Carter was his older brother.

And for the last six months, Daniel had been helping Vanessa manage the family's business records.
