Chapter 3: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
Marcus stared at Zoe.
"You're certain?""
Zoe nodded, clutching the stained apron against her chest.
"The name was on her phone. I saw it before she picked up.""
Marcus looked toward the glass doors, where Vanessa stood with one hand gripping the frame.
"Did you hear what she said to Daniel?""
"Only a little.""
"Tell me everything you remember.""
Zoe took a breath.
"She said, 'He still thinks everything is in his name.'' Then she said something about Friday. I didn't understand what she meant.""
Marcus's jaw tightened.
Friday was four days away.
He glanced at the document folder Officer Reed carried through the gate, then back at Vanessa.
"Why didn't you tell me last night?""
Zoe's face crumpled.
"Because she said you'd blame me. She said Daniel would believe her, and you always listen to him when he talks about the business.""
Marcus felt the words strike somewhere deeper than anger.
He remembered the last few months: Daniel calling with urgent questions, Vanessa asking him to sign routine paperwork, his brother reassuring him that everything was being handled.
He had trusted both of them.
He had also been working late almost every night, trying to close a major development deal that would secure his employees' jobs for years.
He'd told himself that providing for Zoe was the same as being present for her.
Now he stood beside her birthday party, realizing how little he knew about what had been happening inside his own home.
"Baby," he said, taking her hands, "look at me.""
Zoe slowly lifted her eyes.
"You are not in trouble. Do you understand?""
"But I should have told you.""
"No. The person who frightened you is responsible for that fear. Not you.""
Her chin trembled.
Marcus pulled her into his arms.
For the first time since he arrived, Zoe stopped trying to hide her tears. She pressed her face against his suit and cried hard enough to shake his shoulders.
He held her while the party continued around them in uncomfortable silence.
Then Vanessa spoke.
"This is becoming absurd.""
Marcus didn't release Zoe.
"Not another word.""
"I will not be spoken to like a criminal in my own home.""
"Then stop acting like the truth is your enemy.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"You think your brother is involved because a frightened teenager says she saw his name on a phone?""
"I think an officer has a document with my forged signature, my daughter says she saw suspicious paperwork, and you lied about knowing anything.""
"You don't know that the signature is forged.""
"I just told you I didn't sign it.""
"You could have forgotten.""
Marcus turned fully toward her.
"Forgotten signing a financial authorization worth enough to bring a police officer to my birthday party?""
Vanessa looked away.
That tiny movement told him more than her denial had.
He handed Zoe his jacket.
"Put this on, sweetheart.""
"I'm okay, Daddy.""
"No, you're not. And you don't have to pretend.""
She slipped her arms into the jacket. The navy fabric covered the stained apron, but Marcus could still see her hands shaking.
He guided her toward a shaded seating area beside the pool.
"Sit here for a minute. I'll be right there.""
"Don't leave me alone with her.""
The words stopped him.
He looked at Vanessa.
"I won't.""
He moved a chair closer to Zoe and remained beside her while he called his brother.
Daniel answered on the fourth ring.
"Marcus! How's the party? I couldn't make it, but I sent a gift over this morning.""
Marcus watched Vanessa through the glass doors.
"Daniel, where are you?""
"At the office. Why?""
"I need to ask you something about a document.""
A pause.
"What kind of document?""
"One with my signature on it.""
Another pause, longer this time.
"Marcus, you're going to have to be more specific.""
"Officer Reed just showed up at my house with a financial authorization I never signed.""
The line went silent.
Marcus heard faint office noise in the background: a printer, distant voices, the muffled ring of another phone.
Then Daniel spoke.
"Maybe it's one of the forms Vanessa sent over.""
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
"Vanessa sent you forms with my signature?""
"I didn't say that.""
"You just did.""
"No, I said maybe. You know how paperwork gets handled. I review things, she organizes them, you approve them. It's a system.""
"Except I never approved this.""
"Then there must be some mistake.""
"That's what I'm trying to find out.""
Daniel exhaled sharply.
"Listen, Marcus, don't let an officer turn a misunderstanding into a crisis. I'll come by tomorrow, and we'll straighten it out.""
"Why tomorrow?""
"Because I'm working.""
"So am I. I'm working on figuring out who signed my name.""
"Don't start accusing family over paperwork.""
Marcus glanced at Zoe.
She had lifted her head. Even from several feet away, he could see she was listening.
"I'm not accusing anyone," Marcus said.
"I'm asking questions.""
"Then ask the right ones.""
Daniel's tone had changed.
The warmth was gone. His words were measured now, each one placed carefully.
Marcus leaned against the table.
"What does Friday have to do with anything?""
Silence.
Then Daniel asked, "Who told you about Friday?""
Marcus looked directly at Vanessa.
She had stopped moving inside the house.
"Why does that matter?""
"Because I need to know what you're looking at before you make assumptions.""
"Then explain it.""
"Not over the phone.""
"Daniel—"
"I'll call you later.""
The line disconnected.
Marcus lowered the phone.
For a moment, he stared at the screen, listening to the soft hum of the pool equipment and the distant clatter of catering dishes.
Then he noticed Vanessa had disappeared from the glass doors.
He stood.
"Zoe, stay here.""
She caught his wrist.
"Daddy, please.""
"I'll be inside the house. You can see me through the doors.""
"Promise?""
He squeezed her hand.
"Promise.""
He walked across the patio and entered the house through the sliding glass doors.
The interior was bright, filled with natural daylight pouring through tall windows. Fresh flowers stood on the console table. A framed photograph of Marcus, Vanessa, and Zoe sat beside a decorative bowl.
Everything looked perfectly ordinary.
That made it worse.
"Vanessa?""
No answer.
He passed the formal dining room and approached the staircase.
Then he heard a drawer slam upstairs.
He took the stairs two at a time.
The door to the home study stood open.
Vanessa was beside the desk, holding a thick blue folder against her chest.
She turned when she saw him.
For one brief moment, neither of them spoke.
Marcus looked at the folder.
"Is that the one Zoe told me about?""
Vanessa's grip tightened.
"You're invading my privacy.""
"In my study?""
"You never use this room.""
"That doesn't make it yours.""
She moved toward the desk.
Marcus stepped between her and the doorway.
"Put the folder down.""
"No.""
"Vanessa.""
"You don't understand what you're doing.""
"Then help me understand.""
She looked at him, and for the first time that afternoon, her expression wasn't merely angry.
It was desperate.
"If you open that folder, everything changes.""
Marcus held out his hand.
"Maybe it should.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You think you're protecting Zoe. You think I'm the villain because she cried in front of your guests. But you don't know what Daniel promised me.""
Marcus felt a cold knot form in his stomach.
"What did my brother promise you?""
Vanessa's eyes darted toward the open doorway.
Then, slowly, she placed the folder on the desk.
Marcus reached for it.
Before his fingers touched the cover, his phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
He opened it.
There was one photograph.
It showed Daniel standing beside a man Marcus didn't recognize, outside a bank building. Both men were holding a document between them.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.
Three weeks earlier.
The same date printed beneath Marcus's disputed signature.
A second message appeared.
*ASK YOUR BROTHER WHO REALLY OWNS THE HOUSE YOU'RE STANDING IN.*
Marcus read it twice.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
She had gone pale again.
"Who sent this?"" he demanded.
"I don't know.""
"Why does Daniel have a document with a stranger?""
"I don't know!""
"Why did you say everything would change if I opened that folder?""
Vanessa pressed both palms against the desk.
"Because I was trying to protect you.""
Marcus gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
"From what?""
She opened her mouth, then closed it.
Outside, Zoe appeared through the glass doors, watching them with frightened eyes.
Marcus turned back to the folder.
He lifted the cover.
Inside lay several neatly arranged papers, a bank statement, and a photocopy of a document bearing his name.
But the first page was what made his blood run cold.
It wasn't a financial authorization.
It was a property transfer agreement.
And beneath the printed name *MARCUS CARTER*, the signature looked almost exactly like his.
Almost.
At the bottom of the page, a date had been circled in red.
*FRIDAY — FINAL APPROVAL REQUIRED.*
Marcus slowly lifted his eyes to Vanessa.
"Tell me what my brother is trying to take from me.""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
Then she whispered, "It's not what he's trying to take, Marcus.""
May you like
She looked toward Zoe outside the glass doors.
"It's what he's already taken.""
