Chapter 5: The Will That Disappeared

“Where is my father's original will?””

Vanessa didn't move.

Marcus stood beside the desk, his phone clenched in his hand. The bright room suddenly felt smaller, every familiar object transformed into evidence of a life he might never have understood.

“Answer me,” he said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't have it.””

“Daniel says you know why it disappeared.””

“Daniel says whatever he needs to say when he's cornered.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

She walked toward the window, staring out at the garden where guests were still gathering their belongings. The party decorations fluttered in the warm breeze.

“Your father changed his will shortly before he died,” she said.

Marcus's chest tightened.

“When?””

“A few weeks before the funeral.””

“Why wasn't I told?””

“Daniel said he wanted to handle it privately.””

“My father was sick. I was at the hospital every day.””

“I know.””

“I was there when he couldn't hold a glass of water. I was there when he asked me to stay beside him. And you're telling me my brother changed his will without telling me?””

“That's not what I said.””

“Then be precise.””

Vanessa turned around.

“Your father met with an attorney. Daniel said the new will changed how the family property would be managed. He told me your father wanted you to focus on your company instead of dealing with everything after his death.””

Marcus shook his head.

“My father would have told me.””

“Maybe he intended to.””

“Did you see the new will?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I saw a copy.””

“Where?””

“In Daniel's office.””

“Why?””

“Because he asked me to help organize some papers.””

Marcus gave a bitter laugh.

“Apparently, everyone in this family has been organizing my papers except me.””

“Don't do that.””

“Do what?””

“Make me sound like I deliberately set out to hurt you.””

He stared at her.

“You threatened my daughter. You took her dress. You let her stand in front of your guests wearing an apron while she cried.

Then a police officer arrived with a document I never signed. You can stop asking me to make you look better.””

Vanessa's eyes glistened.

“I never wanted Zoe to get hurt.””

“But she did.””

The words silenced her.

Marcus picked up the blue folder and carefully examined its contents. Behind the property transfer agreement, he found a photocopied bank statement and a page listing several account numbers. One had been circled in blue ink.

He recognized the last four digits.

It belonged to an account his father had established for the family years before his death.

Marcus had assumed the account was still managed by the attorney who handled his father's estate.

He photographed the page.

“Who has access to this account?””

Vanessa looked over his shoulder.

“Daniel said it was being consolidated.””

“Consolidated where?””

“I don't know.””

“Stop saying that.””

“Because it's true!””

Marcus held up the bank statement.

“Then help me understand this. Why is my father's account listed on a property transfer agreement with my name on it?””

Vanessa's face lost its remaining color.

“I didn't know that was there.””

He watched her closely.

“Did you know money was being moved?””

She looked away.

“Vanessa.””

“Yes.””

The single word landed between them.

Marcus lowered the folder.

“How much?””

“I don't know the total.””

“How long?””

She pressed her fingers against her forehead.

“Several months.””

Marcus felt the floor shift beneath him.

“You knew my brother was moving money?””

“I knew he was moving money between accounts. He said it was for estate expenses and business protection.””

“And you didn't tell me?””

“He said you had approved it!””

“Did you ask me?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because I believed him!””

Marcus stared at her.

She had no answer that could repair what she'd admitted.

His phone rang again, this time from an unfamiliar number.

“Marcus Carter?””

“Yes.””

“I'm calling from the law office that handled your father's estate. We received a request concerning your father's will, and I need to verify whether you authorized it.””

Marcus straightened.

“No. What request?””

“The person who contacted us asked for certified copies of the estate documents and information about the current status of the property.””

“Who contacted you?””

The attorney hesitated.

“Daniel Carter.””

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

“What did he ask for?””

“He requested copies of the original estate records and a statement regarding the transferability of the family property. We declined to release certain materials without confirmation from the appropriate parties.””

“Did he provide a document with my signature?””

“Yes. That's why we're contacting you.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“What did it authorize?””

“It purported to authorize Daniel to act on your behalf regarding specific estate and property matters. However, our office has not verified its validity.””

“Do you still have a copy?””

“We do.””

“Please preserve it. Officer Reed is investigating a disputed authorization, and I will provide his contact information if needed.””

“Of course. We can cooperate with a lawful request.””

Marcus thanked the attorney and ended the call.

Vanessa was watching him.

“You see?”” she whispered.

“Daniel said everything was legal.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why would my brother need to impersonate me if everything was legal?””

She sank into the chair again.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Vanessa opened her purse and removed a small brass key.

Marcus recognized it immediately.

It belonged to the locked drawer in his home study.

He stared at the key.

“Where did you get that?””

“Daniel gave it to me.””

“When?””

“About six months ago.””

“Why?””

She rubbed the key between her fingers.

“He told me there were documents inside the drawer that needed to be kept safe.””

“What documents?””

“I don't know everything that was inside.””

“Vanessa.””

She flinched.

“There were envelopes, account statements, and a sealed packet with your father's name on it.””

Marcus reached for the key.

She held it back.

“Please. You have to understand why I did what I did.””

“Then tell me.””

“Daniel said if I helped him, he'd make sure I was protected. He said your father had left instructions that could leave me with nothing if you ever decided to end our marriage.””

Marcus went cold.

“What instructions?””

“He wouldn't show me the entire will. He said there was a clause that could affect my future.””

“And you believed him?””

“He showed me a page with your father's signature.””

Marcus stared at her.

“My father died eleven months ago. Why would you wait until my daughter's birthday to tell me?””

Vanessa looked down at the key.

“Because Daniel said Friday was the deadline. He told me that once the transfer was complete, nobody could challenge it without risking the entire estate.””

Marcus reached out his hand.

“Give me the key.””

This time, she obeyed.

He took it, then slipped it into his pocket.

“I'm not going to make any decisions until the documents are examined. But you are going to tell the investigator everything you know.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“You can't do that to me.””

“I can tell the truth.””

“And what happens to us?””

Marcus looked at her for a long moment.

“I don't know.””

Outside, a car door slammed.

Then Zoe appeared at the study doorway, still wearing Marcus's navy jacket over her birthday clothes.

“Daddy?””

He turned.

“What is it, baby?””

She held out her phone.

“Someone just sent me a message.””

Marcus walked toward her.

“What does it say?””

Zoe's fingers trembled as she showed him the screen.

The message came from an unknown number.

*YOUR FATHER ISN'T THE ONLY ONE DANIEL PLANS TO SILENCE. STOP ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WILL.*

Marcus read it twice.

Then he looked at the hallway behind Zoe.

May you like

Someone had known exactly where she was standing.

And whoever sent that message knew she had started talking.
