Chapter 9: The Night My Father Died
Marcus read Vanessa's message three times.
Your father wasn't supposed to leave the hospital that night.
He called her immediately.
She answered on the first ring.
"Where are you?"" he demanded.
"At the house.""
"Explain what you meant.""
"Not over the phone.""
"You don't get to send me a message like that and then refuse to explain it.""
"I know.""
"Did something happen the night my father died?""
Vanessa was silent.
"Vanessa!""
"I'll tell you everything. But not while Daniel might be listening.""
Marcus glanced at Zoe.
His daughter had gone pale again.
"You're going to speak to the investigator," he said.
"If you have information about my father's death, you tell the truth.""
"I will.""
"And you don't contact Zoe again until we know what's happening.""
Vanessa's voice broke.
"I understand.""
Marcus ended the call.
He immediately contacted Officer Reed and relayed the message. Reed told him not to confront Vanessa alone and arranged for an investigator to take a statement.
Marcus also contacted the attorney handling his father's estate. She confirmed that his father's death certificate recorded natural causes and that there was no known indication of foul play in the official file.
"Don't jump to conclusions," she cautioned.
"A troubling message is not evidence that someone caused your father's death. We can review the records and determine whether there's anything that warrants further investigation.""
Marcus agreed.
But the message had reopened a memory he'd spent eleven months trying to bury.
The hospital room.
The smell of antiseptic.
His father's hand growing colder beneath his own.
And Daniel, standing beside the bed, insisting Marcus should go home and rest because there was nothing more anyone could do.
Marcus had listened.
He had gone home for three hours.
When he returned, his father was dead.
For eleven months, Marcus had blamed himself for leaving.
Now he wondered whether someone had used those three hours to do something his father had been trying to prevent.
The following morning, Marcus and Zoe met the estate attorney, Ms. Bennett, at her office.
Officer Reed had arranged for an investigator to attend as well. The flash drive remained sealed in a protective evidence pouch, and the original agreement from Zoe's keepsake box had been placed in a separate folder for examination.
Ms. Bennett reviewed the documents carefully.
"This agreement appears consistent with several references in the estate file," she said.
"But we'll need to authenticate the signatures and compare it with the disputed transfer before making any legal conclusions.""
Marcus pointed to the clause about unauthorized transfers.
"If this is genuine, Daniel couldn't legally transfer the property?""
"Not without satisfying the conditions stated here and obtaining the required approvals.""
"And the document bearing my signature?""
"That will need to be examined separately. If it was submitted without your permission, the investigator can determine whether it constitutes forgery or another offense.""
The investigator, a Black woman named Detective Brooks, opened her notebook.
"Mr. Carter, I want to return to the message Vanessa sent you. Did she explain what she meant by saying your father wasn't supposed to leave the hospital that night?""
"No. She insisted on speaking in person.""
"Did she identify anyone else who might have information?""
"She said Daniel doesn't know everything.""
Detective Brooks made a note.
"That could mean several things. We shouldn't assume it establishes a connection to your father's death. We'll need the hospital records, the relevant timeline, and any credible witness accounts.""
Marcus nodded.
"I want all of it examined.""
"We'll proceed appropriately.""
Zoe sat beside him, holding the wooden box on her lap.
Detective Brooks turned to her.
"Zoe, your grandfather gave you these documents?""
"Yes, ma'am.""
"Did he tell you why?""
"He said I should keep them safe. He told me not to open the envelope unless someone tried to take our home.""
"Did you tell anyone about the box?""
Zoe shook her head.
"Not until yesterday.""
"Did Vanessa know you had it?""
"I don't think so.""
The detective nodded.
"That's important. We'll document the chain of custody and make sure the originals are preserved.""
When the interview ended, Ms. Bennett asked Marcus to remain behind for a moment.
Zoe waited in the reception area with an investigator nearby.
The attorney closed the office door.
"There's something in your father's estate file that I think you should know.""
Marcus sat down.
"What?""
"Your father amended his will shortly before his death. The change was legally witnessed, but the original document was never delivered to our office.""
"Who witnessed it?""
"One witness was the attorney who prepared it. The other was a longtime family employee.""
"Thomas Ellis?""
Ms. Bennett nodded.
"Yes.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"What did the amendment change?""
"It created additional protections for Zoe's inheritance and clarified the conditions under which the family property could be transferred.""
"Was Daniel removed from the estate?""
"Not entirely. Your father left him a defined interest, subject to the agreement you've provided. But the amendment restricted Daniel's ability to act independently.""
Marcus felt a wave of anger rise.
"Why would my father do that?""
"I can't speculate. The original will and the amendment need to be authenticated before we draw conclusions.""
"Then where is the original?""
Ms. Bennett folded her hands.
"That's the problem. Our office has a copy, but the original was removed from the hospital's secure document packet after your father's death. The record shows it was signed out by an authorized family representative.""
Marcus stared at her.
"Who?""
The attorney looked down at her notes.
"Vanessa Carter.""
He stood abruptly.
"She took my father's will from the hospital?""
"She signed for a packet of personal effects and documents. We don't know whether she understood that the original amendment was included.""
"Did she return it?""
"No.""
Marcus walked to the window, trying to control his breathing.
His wife had held the original will.
She had known about the property agreement.
She had helped Daniel submit paperwork with his signature.
And now she claimed to know something about the night his father died.
He turned back.
"Can I see the hospital's record?""
Ms. Bennett slid a photocopy across the desk.
It showed the date, the time, and Vanessa's signature.
Below the signature was a handwritten notation:
*SEALED ENVELOPE RETAINED BY FAMILY REPRESENTATIVE.*
Marcus stared at the page.
"What envelope?""
"We don't know. The hospital's records indicate that the packet contained several personal effects and sealed documents. The contents weren't itemized individually.""
Marcus took a photograph of the page.
Then he asked the question that had been burning through him since he received Vanessa's message.
"Was my father conscious when she collected it?""
Ms. Bennett shook her head.
"According to the medical notes, he had been sedated for several hours.""
Marcus felt sick.
His father couldn't have explained what was in the envelope.
He couldn't have objected if someone took it.
And he couldn't have told Marcus what he had intended to do with it.
That afternoon, Detective Brooks arranged a formal interview with Vanessa.
Marcus did not attend. He stayed with Zoe at the apartment, following the detective's instructions and avoiding any direct confrontation that might compromise the investigation.
At 4:17 p.m., his phone rang.
Detective Brooks.
"Mr. Carter, we've completed an initial interview with your wife.""
"What did she say?""
"She confirmed that she collected a sealed packet from the hospital after your father's death. She says Daniel asked her to bring it to him.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Did she give it to him?""
"She claims she did. But she also says she removed one envelope before handing over the packet.""
"What was in the envelope?""
"She says she doesn't know.""
Marcus's voice hardened.
"Does she expect me to believe she removed a sealed envelope from my father's belongings without looking at it?""
"I'm not asking you to believe anything right now. We're documenting her account and checking it against the available evidence.""
"Did she say why she waited eleven months to tell anyone?""
"She claims Daniel threatened to expose information that could damage her reputation and financial position if she disclosed what happened.""
Marcus looked at Zoe.
His daughter was sitting at the table, drawing small blue flowers on a scrap of paper. She had started doing that whenever she felt anxious.
"What happens next?"" he asked.
"We'll compare her statement with Daniel's account and the estate records. We'll also review the disputed authorization and determine whether there are grounds for additional inquiries.""
"Thank you.""
After the call, Marcus sat beside Zoe.
"Did they find out anything?"" she asked.
"Some things.""
"Was Vanessa telling the truth?""
"Parts of her account match the records. Other parts still need to be checked.""
Zoe put down her pencil.
"Do you think she took something from Grandpa?""
Marcus looked at the sealed evidence pouch on the table.
"I think she took an envelope. We don't know what's inside it yet.""
Zoe's face tightened.
"What if it explains everything?""
"Then we'll find out.""
His phone vibrated.
An email from Detective Brooks appeared with an attachment she had received through the estate attorney.
It was a scanned page recovered from the hospital's document archive.
At the top was his father's name.
At the bottom was Vanessa's signature.
Between them was a handwritten sentence, apparently written by his father before his final hospitalization.
Marcus read it aloud.
"If Daniel has already received the first envelope, give the second to Zoe.""
He stopped.
There was a second envelope.
And according to the hospital record, Vanessa had taken both.
A final line appeared beneath the note.
*THE SECOND ENVELOPE CONTAINS THE NAME OF THE PERSON WHO ALTERED MY WILL.*
Marcus looked at the date.
Then he looked at Vanessa's signature.
For the first time, the question wasn't whether his brother had tried to take the house.
May you like
It was whether someone had altered his father's final wishes before the family ever knew there was a problem.
And somewhere, Vanessa was still holding the one document that could identify who had done it.
