Chapter 1: The Slap

“Why did you hurt my wife?””

The slap cracked through the elegant living room before Gloria even understood what was happening.

At seventy-five, she had spent a lifetime learning how to stand with dignity.

But one strike from her own son nearly took her off her feet.

Gloria stumbled sideways, one hand catching the edge of the coffee table. A glass trembled beside her fingers. Her silver hair shifted across her cheek.

Across the room, Ethan stood breathing hard.

His broad shoulders rose and fell beneath his dark shirt. His hand remained suspended in the air, fingers slowly curling into a fist.

Behind him, Sophia clutched her arm.

Her eyes were wet.

Or at least, they looked wet.

“I told you she attacked me,” Sophia whispered.

Gloria looked at her daughter-in-law.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then Gloria noticed it.

The corner of Sophia's mouth.

A tiny lift.

Almost a smile.

It vanished the moment Gloria looked directly at her.

“Ethan,” Gloria said quietly.

He shook his head.

“Don't, Mom.””

“I haven't said anything.””

“You don't have to.”” Ethan pointed toward Sophia.

“She's terrified.””

Sophia lowered her gaze.

“I didn't want him to do this,” she said softly.

“She's his mother.””

Gloria almost laughed.

Almost.

Instead, she straightened her house dress and touched the side of her face.

The room was painfully familiar.

Family photographs lined the walls. Ethan's graduation picture. His wedding portrait. A photograph of Gloria holding him as a baby.

All the memories were still there.

Only the people inside them had changed.

“You believe her?”” Gloria asked.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“She showed me her arm.””

“An arm can be scratched.””

Sophia immediately stepped forward.

“Why would I hurt myself?””

Gloria looked at her.

“You tell me.””

Sophia's eyes widened.

“Ethan…”

“Mom, stop.””

Gloria studied her son's face.

There was anger there.

But beneath it was something else.

Fear.

He wasn't defending Sophia because he was certain.

He was defending her because he was afraid of what would happen if he admitted he might have been wrong.

Gloria slowly turned toward the wall-mounted security monitor.

Ethan frowned.

“Where are you going?””

Gloria didn't answer.

She walked across the room.

Sophia's breathing changed.

Just slightly.

Gloria pressed a button beneath the monitor.

The screen lit up.

Security footage filled the room.

“Mom,” Ethan said, “what are you doing?””

Gloria's finger hovered over the controls.

Then she looked back at him.

“Watch this.””

Sophia stopped breathing.

The footage began.

It showed the same living room.

The same coffee table.

The same sofa.

And Sophia sitting alone.

Sophia stared at the screen.

On the footage, she looked around the room.

Then she picked up her glass.

She deliberately tipped it over.

Liquid spilled across her dress.

Ethan's mouth fell open.

“What…”

The video continued.

Sophia looked at the spilled drink.

Then she grabbed her own arm.

She dragged her fingernails across her skin.

Once.

Twice.

Hard enough to leave red marks.

She released herself.

Then, almost instantly, she began crying.

On the screen, Sophia reached for her phone.

In the real room, Ethan slowly turned toward his wife.

Sophia's face had gone completely still.

The footage continued playing.

And then Ethan heard the voice of the woman he had just defended.

“Ethan?””

Sophia's recorded voice trembled through the monitor.

“Ethan, please come home.””

The room went silent.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Then at Sophia.

“You lied to me?””

Sophia opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Gloria watched her son.

She had been slapped.

She had been accused.

But somehow, watching Ethan's face break was worse.

May you like

Because Gloria knew this was only the beginning.

And there was another recording waiting.
