Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Tears
Sophia moved first.
She crossed the room and reached for the security monitor.
“Turn that off.””
Ethan caught her wrist.
“No.””
Sophia froze.
“Ethan, you're hurting me.””
He immediately released her.
But he didn't apologize.
His eyes remained fixed on the screen.
“You scratched yourself.””
Sophia swallowed.
“I was upset.””
“You spilled the drink on yourself.””
“I panicked.””
“You called me crying.””
“I was scared!””
Ethan stepped backward.
“Scared of what?””
Sophia looked toward Gloria.
Gloria said nothing.
That silence seemed to make Sophia more nervous than any accusation could have.
“I thought your mother was going to hurt me,” Sophia said.
Ethan's voice dropped.
“The video shows you hurting yourself.””
Sophia's eyes filled with tears again.
This time, Gloria noticed something different.
Sophia was watching Ethan.
Not the monitor.
Not her injured arm.
Ethan.
She was calculating.
“I made a mistake,” Sophia whispered.
Ethan shook his head.
“A mistake?””
“I didn't know the cameras were recording.””
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Silence.
Sophia's face changed.
Ethan slowly turned his head.
“What did you just say?””
Sophia blinked.
“I—I meant…”
“You didn't know the cameras were recording?””
She backed away.
“I was confused.””
Gloria folded her arms.
“You knew exactly where the cameras were.””
Sophia glared at her.
For the first time, the tears disappeared completely.
“You've always hated me.””
Gloria's expression barely changed.
“I welcomed you into my home.””
“You never accepted me.””
“I gave you the bedroom next to mine when you and Ethan needed a place to stay.””
“And reminded me every day that it was your house.””
“It is my house.””
Sophia looked at Ethan.
“See?””
Ethan didn't respond.
Sophia's voice softened.
“Baby, she's trying to turn you against me.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Don't call me baby right now.””
The words landed harder than a shout.
Sophia's lips parted.
Gloria reached for the monitor.
“There is another clip.””
Sophia's face drained of color.
Ethan looked at his mother.
“Another one?””
Gloria nodded.
“I found it this morning.””
Sophia stepped forward.
“No.””
Gloria pressed play.
The footage changed.
Same room.
Different angle.
Sophia sat at the coffee table alone.
She wasn't crying.
She wasn't angry.
She looked calm.
Almost comfortable.
Her phone was pressed to her ear.
Ethan moved closer to the monitor.
Sophia's recorded voice filled the room.
“Ethan still doesn't know who signed it.””
Ethan stopped.
Gloria watched his face.
Sophia whispered, “Turn it off.””
Neither of them moved.
On the screen, Sophia continued talking.
“I told you, he thinks everything is in his name.””
A pause.
Then:
“No. Don't send anything here.””
Ethan's breathing became heavier.
Sophia stepped toward him.
“Ethan, please.””
He held up one hand.
“Who were you talking to?””
Sophia shook her head.
“It wasn't what you think.””
“You said someone signed something.””
“I was angry.””
“You said I didn't know who signed it.””
“I was talking about something else.””
“What?””
Sophia couldn't answer.
Ethan looked toward Gloria.
“Mom, when did you record this?””
“This morning.””
“Why were you watching her?””
“I wasn't.””
Gloria pointed toward the monitor.
“The cameras were already recording.””
Ethan stared at the screen again.
The footage continued.
Sophia reached toward something on the coffee table.
A document.
She placed her hand over it.
The camera angle didn't reveal the entire page.
But it showed enough to reveal a signature at the bottom.
Ethan leaned closer.
“Pause it.””
Gloria paused the footage.
Ethan stared.
Sophia's voice became almost a whisper.
“Please don't zoom in.””
Gloria's hand remained on the control.
Ethan looked at her.
“Why not?””
Sophia took one step backward.
Then another.
Gloria pressed the zoom button.
The document filled the monitor.
Ethan's eyes locked onto the signature.
His face went pale.
“I never signed that.””
Sophia slowly backed toward the door.
Gloria looked from the screen to her daughter-in-law.
“Then someone forged it.””
May you like
Ethan turned sharply toward Sophia.
And Sophia finally stopped pretending to cry.
