Chapter 10: The Person Who Signed
“The person who forged Gloria's signature is—”
The recording cut out.
Ethan stared at the phone.
“No.””
Sophia tapped the screen.
Nothing.
She tried again.
The file refused to play.
Another knock struck the front door.
Harder this time.
Gloria looked toward the hallway.
“Don't open it.””
Ethan nodded.
He turned back to Sophia.
“Can you recover the rest?””
“I don't know.””
“Try.””
Sophia worked quickly.
Her fingers shook as she opened the archive settings.
“There.””
“What?””
“The original file wasn't deleted.””
She turned the phone toward Ethan.
“It was interrupted.””
“Can you restore it?””
“I need the missing segment.””
“From where?””
“The security system.””
Gloria suddenly looked at the wall-mounted monitor.
“The cameras record audio too.””
Sophia nodded.
“If the microphone caught Dad's voice…”
“Then the missing words may still be there.””
Ethan moved to the monitor.
“Find the timestamp.””
Sophia read it from the file.
“Two years ago. December seventeenth. 9:42 p.m.””
Gloria's face changed.
“I remember that night.””
Ethan looked at her.
“What happened?””
“Your father had been dead for six months.””
She swallowed.
“Someone came to this house.””
“Who?””
“I never saw their face.””
The monitor displayed the archived footage.
The living room appeared.
Dark.
Empty.
Then Gloria entered the frame.
She was younger, wearing the same kind of elegant house dress she wore now.
She carried a folder.
She placed it on the coffee table.
Then another person entered.
Ethan leaned closer.
The figure was partially hidden by the camera angle.
But the voice was clear.
A woman's voice.
“I need you to sign this.””
Gloria on the recording shook her head.
“I already signed what your father asked me to sign.””
“You signed the wrong thing.””
“I signed nothing giving you control.””
The woman stepped closer.
“You don't understand what happens if you refuse.””
Gloria's recorded voice trembled.
“I understand perfectly.””
Ethan looked at his mother.
“Who is that?””
Gloria didn't answer.
The woman on the screen placed a document on the table.
Then she picked up a pen.
“Sign it.””
“No.””
“You want Ethan to inherit the trust?””
“Yes.””
“Then sign.””
“I said no.””
The woman grabbed Gloria's wrist.
Ethan's expression hardened.
Sophia whispered,
“Oh my God.””
The recording continued.
Gloria pulled free.
“You leave my son alone.””
The woman laughed.
“Your son isn't the problem.””
She looked directly toward the security camera.
“He never was.””
The footage froze.
Ethan stared at the screen.
Then he slowly turned toward Sophia.
“You know that voice.””
Sophia's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
“Who is it?””
Sophia didn't answer.
Ethan's voice rose.
“Who?””
Sophia looked at Gloria.
Gloria whispered the name.
“Your father's sister.””
Ethan froze.
“My Aunt Denise?””
Sophia nodded.
“Marcus worked for her.””
Ethan stepped back.
“Why?””
Gloria looked at the old footage.
“Because Denise believed your father stole the family fortune from her.””
“He didn't.””
“No.””
“Then why did she want the trust?””
“Because your father discovered she had been moving money from the family accounts.””
Ethan stared.
“How much?””
Gloria shook her head.
“I never knew.””
Sophia suddenly spoke.
“I do.””
Both turned toward her.
Sophia swallowed.
“Marcus showed me the records.””
Ethan waited.
“He said Denise had already taken millions.””
Silence.
Gloria closed her eyes.
“And my father stopped her.””
“Yes.””
Sophia looked at Ethan.
“That's why she needed your signature.””
“To move the trust.””
“And why she needed your mother's.””
“To make it look authorized.””
Ethan looked at the screen.
Everything suddenly connected.
The forged signature.
The stolen footage.
The staged attack.
The messages.
The document.
Marcus hadn't created the plan.
He had inherited it.
Ethan walked toward the front door.
Gloria grabbed his arm.
“Where are you going?””
“To confront Denise.””
“No.””
“Mom, she threatened you.””
“She wants you angry.””
Ethan stopped.
Gloria pointed toward the monitor.
“Look.””
The live camera feed had returned.
Marcus was standing outside.
But he wasn't alone.
An older Black woman stood beside him.
Elegant coat.
Silver earrings.
A composed expression.
Denise.
Ethan stared at her.
His aunt looked directly into the camera.
Then she lifted one hand.
She held the missing metal box.
Gloria's face went pale.
Denise spoke through the intercom.
“Gloria, it's time to finish what your husband started.””
Ethan pressed the button.
“You're not getting the trust.””
Denise smiled.
“I already have it.””
“No.””
“You don't understand.””
“I understand everything.””
Denise's smile faded.
“Then you know your father made one final mistake.””
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
“What mistake?””
“He trusted your mother.””
Gloria stepped toward the intercom.
“No. He trusted his son.””
Denise laughed.
“He trusted a woman who lied to him.””
Ethan looked at Gloria.
“Mom?””
Gloria shook her head.
“She's trying to make you doubt me.””
Denise held up the metal box.
“Ask your mother what was inside.””
Ethan looked at Gloria.
“What was inside?””
Gloria's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't know.””
Denise's voice sharpened.
“Open the door, Ethan.””
“No.””
“Then I'll tell you.””
Ethan waited.
Denise said,
“Your father didn't put money in that box.””
Gloria stared at the monitor.
“He put evidence.””
Denise's face went still.
Ethan's heart pounded.
“What evidence?””
Denise looked at Marcus.
Marcus lowered his eyes.
Denise slowly turned back toward the camera.
“Evidence that proves I didn't steal the money.””
Ethan frowned.
“Then who did?””
Denise's expression changed.
For the first time, she looked frightened.
“Marcus.””
Ethan turned toward the monitor.
Marcus stepped backward.
Denise looked at him.
“You said you destroyed it.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I thought I did.””
“You lied to me.””
“I didn't know the box was still here.””
Sophia whispered,
“He played both sides.””
Ethan looked at her.
“What?””
Sophia's eyes remained fixed on Marcus.
“He wasn't working for Denise.””
She took a breath.
“He was working for himself.””
Marcus suddenly moved toward the front door.
Denise grabbed his arm.
“Where are you going?””
“You're finished.””
“No.””
“You don't have the evidence.””
Denise held up the box.
“I do.””
Marcus laughed.
“You have an empty box.””
Denise froze.
Ethan looked at Gloria.
Gloria's face suddenly softened.
A tiny, knowing smile appeared.
Ethan noticed.
“Mom?””
Gloria reached beneath the coffee table.
Her fingers found a small black device.
She placed it on the table.
Sophia stared.
“What is that?””
“The real recording.””
Ethan's eyes widened.
Gloria pressed a button.
Marcus's voice filled the room.
“I'll forge Ethan's signature.””
Denise's recorded voice answered,
“And Gloria's.””
Marcus continued.
“Then we'll make it look like Ethan transferred the trust himself.””
Ethan looked at Sophia.
The recording continued.
Marcus said,
“And if anything goes wrong, we blame Gloria.””
Denise asked,
“What about Sophia?””
Marcus laughed.
“She'll do whatever I tell her.””
Sophia covered her mouth.
Then another voice entered the recording.
A voice none of them expected.
Gloria's husband.
Alive.
The recording was from before his death.
“If you're hearing this, Marcus, you've already made your mistake.””
Marcus went silent.
Ethan stared at the device.
His father's voice continued.
“I knew what you were doing.””
A pause.
“And I knew Denise would eventually trust you.””
Denise's face appeared on the monitor.
She was crying now.
His father's voice continued.
“So I left the evidence where neither of you would look.””
Ethan looked at the metal box in Denise's hand.
“The box?””
Gloria shook her head.
“No.””
She pointed toward the family photograph above the cabinet.
“Behind the photograph.””
Ethan removed it.
A thin compartment opened.
Inside was a small memory card.
Sophia gasped.
Gloria smiled through her tears.
“Your father knew they would search the box.””
Ethan took the card.
His phone displayed the files.
Bank records.
Forged documents.
Audio recordings.
Everything.
The entire conspiracy.
Ethan looked toward the monitor.
“It's over.””
Marcus turned to Denise.
She slapped him.
He stumbled backward.
Police sirens suddenly echoed outside.
Denise looked toward the street.
“How?””
Sophia raised her phone.
“I sent the recordings twenty minutes ago.””
Ethan looked at her.
“You did?””
Sophia nodded.
“I finally told the truth.””
Marcus ran.
But officers were already approaching from both ends of the street.
Denise dropped the metal box.
The front door opened.
Ethan didn't move.
Gloria stood beside him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Ethan looked at his mother's bruised cheek.
“I hit you.””
Gloria touched his face.
“I know.””
“I believed her.””
“I know.””
“I should have listened.””
Gloria's eyes filled with tears.
“You were manipulated.””
Ethan shook his head.
“But I hurt you.””
Gloria pulled him into her arms.
He broke down against her shoulder.
“I thought I lost my son,” she whispered.
“You didn't.””
Behind them, Sophia stood silently.
Ethan looked at her.
There was no anger left in his face.
Only exhaustion.
“You need to tell the police everything.””
Sophia nodded.
“I will.””
She walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
“Ethan?””
He looked at her.
“I am sorry.””
He said nothing.
Sophia left.
The living room became quiet again.
Gloria walked to the security monitor.
The screen still showed the family photographs.
Her husband.
Her son.
Her family.
She reached for the controls.
Then Ethan stopped her.
“Leave it on.””
“Why?””
“So we remember.””
Gloria looked at him.
“Remember what?””
Ethan looked at the photograph of himself as a child.
“That betrayal doesn't always come from strangers.””
He took his mother's hand.
“Sometimes it comes wearing a familiar face.””
May you like
Gloria squeezed his fingers.
And for the first time that night, the room felt safe again.
