Chapter 5: The Locked Drawer

The deadbolt clicked.

Ethan spun toward the door.

Sophia backed away.

Gloria didn't move.

A second click followed.

Then the handle turned.

Ethan reached the door first.

He yanked it open.

Nobody stood outside.

The hallway was empty.

He looked left.

Then right.

“Who was here?””

Gloria stepped beside him.

“No one.””

Ethan looked down.

A small white envelope lay on the floor.

His name was written across it.

*ETHAN.*

He picked it up.

Sophia whispered, “Don't.””

Ethan stopped.

He looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because you don't know what's inside.””

“Neither do you.””

Sophia didn't respond.

Ethan tore open the envelope.

A single photograph fell into his hand.

It showed his father sitting at the same coffee table years earlier.

Beside him sat a thick folder.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

*ASK GLORIA ABOUT THE DRAWER.*

Ethan looked at his mother.

“What drawer?””

Gloria's face had gone pale.

“Ethan…”

“What drawer?””

She turned away.

Sophia whispered, “You see?””

Ethan looked at her.

“See what?””

“She knew.””

Gloria walked toward the sofa.

“Your father kept certain things private.””

“From me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he thought he was protecting you.””

“From what?””

Gloria didn't answer.

Ethan followed her.

“You told me everything after Dad died.””

“I told you what you needed to know.””

His expression changed.

“You lied.””

“I protected you.””

“That's what everyone keeps saying.””

He dropped the photograph onto the coffee table.

“I'm done being protected.””

Gloria stared at her son.

Then she walked to a tall wooden cabinet against the wall.

She opened the lower compartment.

Inside were old family albums, legal folders, and a small metal box.

Ethan noticed it immediately.

“That's it.””

Gloria took the box out.

Sophia whispered,

“Gloria, don't.””

Gloria looked at her.

“You knew about this too?””

Sophia shook her head.

“I knew there was a box.””

“Who told you?””

Sophia looked away.

Ethan stepped between them.

“Who told you?””

“Marcus.””

The name changed the room.

Gloria opened the box.

Inside was a brass key.

And beneath it, a folded note.

Ethan reached for the note.

Gloria caught his wrist.

“Not yet.””

“Mom.””

“Your father asked me never to open that drawer unless something happened to him.””

“What drawer?””

Gloria held up the brass key.

“His desk.””

Ethan stared.

“Dad's desk was sold years ago.””

“No.””

Gloria's voice was barely audible.

“I kept it.””

Ethan looked stunned.

“Where?””

She pointed toward a framed photograph hanging above the cabinet.

“The back of that frame.””

Ethan removed the photograph.

Behind it was a narrow compartment.

Inside sat a folded legal document.

Ethan pulled it free.

Sophia took a sharp breath.

Gloria looked at her.

“You've seen this before.””

Sophia shook her head.

“No.””

“You're lying.””

Ethan unfolded the paper.

The first page contained his father's name.

The second contained several paragraphs.

Then Ethan saw a number.

His expression changed.

“What is this?””

Gloria said nothing.

“Mom.””

“It was your father's private account.””

Ethan scanned the page.

“This says there was money.””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

Gloria hesitated.

Ethan looked again.

His eyes widened.

“Mom…”

Sophia whispered,

“Don't read the amount.””

Ethan looked at her.

“How do you know there is an amount?””

Sophia froze.

He stepped closer.

“You've seen this document.””

“I told you, Marcus showed me something.””

“Something?””

“Yes.””

“What exactly did he show you?””

Sophia's voice trembled.

“A copy.””

“A copy of what?””

She looked toward Gloria.

Then she whispered,

“The trust agreement.””

Ethan stared at her.

“Whose trust?””

Sophia didn't answer.

Gloria did.

“Yours.””

Ethan's fingers tightened around the document.

“My father left me a trust?””

Gloria nodded.

“Not just a trust.””

She took a breath.

“He left you control of it when you turned forty.””

Ethan looked at the date.

His face drained of color.

“I turned forty six months ago.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan noticed something at the bottom of the page.

A signature.

His signature.

And beneath it, a date from three months earlier.

He looked up slowly.

“I was never given this.””

Gloria's voice broke.

“That's why your father made me promise to protect it.””

Ethan looked at Sophia.

“You knew.””

She shook her head.

“I knew there was money.””

“How?””

“Marcus told me.””

“And you never told me?””

Sophia's tears returned.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you'd leave me.””

Ethan stared at her.

“You tried to make me believe my mother attacked you.””

Sophia said nothing.

“You lied about the cameras.””

Nothing.

“You knew about my trust.””

Her lips trembled.

Then the monitor made a sharp electronic sound.

The remote-access warning disappeared.

A new message appeared.

*FILE TRANSFER COMPLETE.*

Ethan turned toward the screen.

Gloria stepped closer.

A folder appeared on the monitor.

Its name was simple.

*ETHAN — SIGNATURE FILES.*

Ethan whispered,

“Open it.””

Gloria hesitated.

Then she clicked.

A scanned document appeared.

At the top was Ethan's name.

At the bottom was his signature.

But beside the signature was a handwritten note.

Three words.

*Copied from Gloria.*

Ethan looked at his mother.

And Gloria suddenly realized the forgery had not begun with Sophia.
