Chapter 2: The Name Hidden In The Past

The ballroom had never felt so cold.

Adrian Vale stood in the center of the room with a small piece of paper between his fingers, staring at four words that seemed impossible to understand.

*Ask her about my mother.*

A child had written them.

A child who couldn’t speak.

A child who had just stopped him from drinking a glass of champagne that might have been poisoned.

And now that same child was asking him to question the woman he was supposed to marry.

“Adrian,” Victoria said softly.

Her voice had changed.

Not much.

Most people would never notice.

But Adrian had spent five years learning every detail about her—the way she laughed when she was genuinely happy, the way she touched her necklace when she was nervous, the way she lowered her voice when she wanted control.

And right now, she was trying to control the room.

“Give me the paper,” Victoria said.

Adrian looked at her.

“Why?””

A brief silence followed.

Her expression shifted.

“Because this is obviously a misunderstanding.””

“Then explain it.””

Victoria blinked.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

The guests around them suddenly became very interested in their champagne glasses and expensive watches.

Nobody wanted to leave.

Nobody wanted to be the first person to walk away from the biggest scandal of the year.

Victoria lowered her voice.

“Adrian, not here.””

“Why not?””

“Because you’re allowing a frightened child to manipulate you.””

Lily immediately stepped backward.

The words hurt her.

Adrian noticed.

The little girl looked down at the floor, clutching the edge of her blue dress.

Something inside him tightened.

“Don’t talk about her like that.””

Victoria stared at him.

“I’m trying to protect you.””

“No,” Adrian said quietly.

“You’re trying to protect yourself.””

The room went completely still.

Victoria’s face lost color.

For a second, the perfect image disappeared.

Then she recovered.

“You don’t mean that.””

Adrian looked at the doctor standing nearby.

“Take the glass for testing.””

The doctor nodded.

“And the bottle?””

“Everything.””

Victoria’s jaw tightened.

“You’re seriously doing this?””

“Yes.””

“Based on a note from a child?””

Adrian looked down at Lily.

“No.””

He looked back at Victoria.

“Based on your reaction.””

That sentence landed harder than any accusation.

Victoria stepped closer.

“After everything I’ve done for you, you’re going to believe a stranger over me?””

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

Because that was the problem.

He had believed her for years.

Without question.

He had defended her when business partners criticized her.

He had stood beside her when rumors spread about her family.

He had ignored small inconsistencies because love had made him generous.

Too generous.

The security team eventually led the guests away from the center of the ballroom.

But nobody truly left.

They gathered near the edges, whispering.

Phones appeared.

Cameras flashed.

Adrian knew the headlines would come.

Billionaire Engagement Gala Turns Into Poison Scandal.

But he didn’t care.

Not yet.

His attention stayed on Lily.

A woman from the charity staff knelt beside her.

“Lily, sweetheart, are you okay?””

The girl nodded.

Then pointed toward Adrian.

The woman translated.

“She wants to know if he’s safe.””

Adrian crouched down.

For the first time, he was face-to-face with her.

“Why did you save me?””

Lily looked at him.

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Her eyes filled with frustration.

The woman explained gently.

“She hasn’t spoken since she was four.””

Adrian frowned.

“Since she was four?””

The woman nodded.

“After her mother died.””

The words struck him.

Her mother.

The second note.

“Who was her mother?””

The woman hesitated.

“Her name was Elena Carter.””

Adrian felt a strange feeling in his chest.

The name sounded familiar.

Not from his personal life.

From somewhere else.

A memory buried under years of meetings, contracts, and numbers.

“Elena Carter,” he repeated.

Victoria suddenly interrupted.

“We should stop this.””

Everyone looked at her.

She forced calm into her voice.

“This is becoming cruel. A child lost her mother, and now everyone is turning her grief into entertainment.””

Adrian watched her carefully.

“You know Elena Carter?””

The silence that followed was louder than anything else that night.

Victoria didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

The charity worker looked between them.

“You do know her?””

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“I knew of her.””

Adrian stood.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria sighed.

“She worked for one of my father’s companies years ago.””

“And?””

“And she was unstable.””

Lily suddenly reacted.

She stepped forward and shook her head violently.

The charity worker looked uncomfortable.

“Lily says that’s not true.””

Victoria looked at the girl.

“She was a troubled woman.””

The little girl’s hands curled into fists.

Adrian noticed.

“Careful.””

Victoria turned toward him.

“Careful?””

“Yes.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Because every time you mention this woman, Lily looks like she knows you’re lying.””

The accusation hung between them.

Victoria laughed softly.

“Adrian, listen to yourself.””

She stepped closer.

“You’re standing at our engagement party, surrounded by strangers, questioning me because of a child who cannot even explain what happened.””

That sentence bothered him.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was calculated.

She wasn’t asking what happened.

She wasn’t asking why Lily was afraid.

She was focusing on the girl’s weakness.

Adrian looked at Lily.

Then back at Victoria.

“What happened to Elena Carter?””

Victoria looked away.

Just for a second.

But Adrian saw it.

“I don’t remember.””

The charity worker gasped.

“You don’t remember?””

Victoria turned sharply.

“Excuse me?””

“You said she worked for your family. How can you not remember?””

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“You should be careful with your accusations.””

The woman stepped back.

Adrian noticed something else.

The staff member wasn’t just afraid of Victoria.

She was angry.

“Who are you?”” Adrian asked her.

“My name is Rachel Moore.””

“Your position?””

“I worked at the Carter Foundation.””

Adrian frowned.

“The Carter Foundation?””

Rachel nodded.

“Elena created it.””

“Created what?””

“A support program for children who lost their parents because of corporate negligence.””

The room grew quiet.

Adrian looked at Victoria.

“What does your family have to do with that?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

Rachel did.

“Your company bought the land where Elena’s foundation was located.””

Adrian froze.

“My company?””

Rachel nodded.

“Seven years ago.””

A memory surfaced.

A large acquisition.

A property dispute.

A file he had barely reviewed because his legal team handled the details.

At the time, he had been building his company internationally.

Thousands of documents crossed his desk.

Thousands of decisions.

He remembered signing something.

But not this.

“What happened to the foundation?””

Rachel looked at Lily.

Then lowered her voice.

“It burned down.””

A wave of whispers moved through the ballroom.

“When?”” Adrian asked.

“Two weeks after the acquisition was approved.””

Adrian stared at her.

“An accident?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Victoria stepped forward.

“This is absurd.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

Her face tightened.

“I’m not.””

But she was.

Everyone could see it now.

Adrian’s phone suddenly vibrated.

He looked down.

Unknown number.

One message.

He opened it.

His heart stopped.

A photo appeared.

It showed a younger Victoria.

Standing beside a burning building.

And next to her was a man Adrian recognized immediately.

His own father.

The message beneath the picture was only one sentence.

*Your fiancée didn’t just know Elena Carter. She was there the night your father destroyed her life.*

Adrian slowly lifted his eyes.

Victoria was watching him.

And she knew.

She knew exactly what he had just seen.

Then Lily grabbed his hand and placed one final note into his palm.

This one was sealed.

And written on the outside were five words:

*Open this only if she lies.*

Adrian looked at Victoria.

May you like

Then at the envelope.

And slowly, he broke the seal.
